by Victor R. Volkman 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

I hope this will be of interest to librarians in all corners of the state. We have had as many as 53 patrons show up on Zoom for these circulation-boosting events. Reply to Evelyn Gathu <egathu(a)crystalfallslibrary.org> if you would like our special calendar graphics, one for each season, that features book covers. Suitable for flyers, e-blasts, etc. .... For Immediate Release… *Contact: Victor Volkman (734) 417-4266 President(a)UPPAA.org* www.UPPAA.org <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> U.P. Notable Books <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>*Reading local authors has great informational and educational value and contributes toward cultural enrichment. Continuing into their 5th year of book selections,*the U.P. Notable Books Club *is hosting a series of discussions with authors of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to engage community members with local authors. All residents of Michigan are invited to participate with no cost or obligation. To date, 35 authors have already appeared in the program and their appearances can be replayed on the*http://video.UPPAA.org* <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> channel. U.P. Notable Books Book Club Organizer,*Evelyn Gathu* (Crystal Falls, MI), has this to say about the Year 5 Notables: "I am excited that the list covers a vast number of topics. For example, I had never heard about the murder that took place on Mackinac Island. I think it will be neat to read Rod Sadler's book about it, and then follow it with the new fiction Classic U.P. Notable Book /Murder at Mackinac,/ by Ronald J. Lewis. Also, Tyler Tichelaar is one of my favorite authors of all time, so I am so pleased to see that he is now a two-time U.P. Notable Book Award author! It is always so nice corresponding with the winners and setting up our U.P. Notable Books Book Club via Zoom Calendar, and I am excited to read all the books and talk to the authors each month." >From February 8th, 2024 to December 12th, 2024 nine new authors will do Zoom talks with readers (7:00 PM Eastern / 6:00 PM Central). During these events, authors will reveal new background details as well as answer live reader questions about their work. Readers can buy books in advance or check them out from their local library, or inter-library loan to discuss with the authors. Many are now available in eBook editions at the Great Lakes Digital Library thanks to the efforts of Superiorland Library Co-op. Authors and their books participating in the upcoming fifth year include: * /The Unsolved Mysteries of Father Marquette's Many Graves /by Jennifer S. McGraw (Feb. 8th) * /The Biting Cold /by Matthew Hellman (March 14 -- REDO) * /Odin’s Eye: A Marquette Time Travel Novel/ by Tyler R. Tichelaar (April 11) * /Yooper Ale Trails: Craft Breweries and Brewpubs of Michigan's/ U.P. by Jon C. Stott (May 9) * /Grim Paradise: The Cold Case Search for the Mackinac Island Kille/r by Rod Sadler (June 13) * /The Great Seney Fire: A History of the Walsh Ditch Fire/ of 1976 by Gregory M. Lusk (July 11) * /Who Am I?/ by Julie Buchholtz (Aug. 8) * /Murder in Mackinac/, by Ronald J. Lewis (members read and discuss - author not present, Sept. 12) * /A Nostalgic Lens: Photographs and Essays from Michigan's U.P. /by Peter Wurdock (Oct. 10) * /The Midwife’s Touch/ by Sue Harrison (Nov. 14) * /Death's Door: The Truth Behind Michigan's Largest Mass Murder /by Steve Lehto (members read and discuss - author not present, Dec. 12) The complete event schedule is available online at www.UPNotable.com <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>, click on the "Join Book Club" button “What inspires me the most about our club is the positive feedback from local authors and patrons alike,” says Evelyn Gathu, Director of the Crystal Falls District Community Library, who is the creator and organizer of the club. “After every book club meeting we have, I get emails from patrons thanking me for creating the club.” She says that the library circulation has definitely increased because of the book club, indicating an increased love of reading the works of local authors in the community. *UP Notable Books Club 2024 authors: Sue Harrison, Tyler Tichelaar, Julie Bucholtz (from left)* Why local authors are less read, on the whole, than those widely publicized in mainstream media seems a matter of presumption or prejudgment. And Gathu agrees: “I think some people do not believe that books written by local authors are as good as those produced nationally, and this book club is really helping to deflate that stigma!” She says that she had read in the local paper that the first ever U.P. Notable Books List was created by the editors of the /U.P. Reader/ and UPPAA (Upper Peninsula Publishers & Authors Association) in January 2020. This led her to contact UPPAA President, Victor R. Volkman, and he was thrilled with the idea of local authors interacting with the readers in the community. More information about the U.P. Notable Book list, /U.P. Circulating board game storage?
by Melissa Adkins 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

Hi All, I am wanting a small collection of games that can be used in house or checked out. What kind of storage are you all using for circulating board games? I have some zippered totes but they are a bit much for some of the smaller games. Let me know what you are using, and pictures would be great if you have any! Presenter Request
by Danielle Hays 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

Hi, everyone! I was wondering if anyone might know of a presenter who has a presentation/program along the lines of a babysitting workshop for teens/tweens? Not necessarily one that would end in a certification, but just a sort of general overview that could give kids looking to start babysitting some tips and information on how to be a good babysitter. I took a class like that as a kid and I think it would be a fun and informative program to hold! Thanks! -- *Danielle Hays* She/Her/Hers Librarian Brandon Township Public Library 304 South St Ortonville, MI 48462 *ENGAGE • EDUCATE • ENRICH • EMPOWER*

Seed library solicitation language?
by Mary K O'Kelly 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

We're starting our first seed library and are short on seeds. I'd like to send out some notes asking seed companies if they have any of last year's packets left (I know we're a bit late on this) and I'm wondering if any of you with more established programs have sample language you can send me. I've already put us in the MI Seed Library Network, but I recognize we need to go broader than that. I'd also welcome any other tips and advice you can share! Thanks, Mary Mary O'Kelly, MLIS Associate Dean for Education and User Services University Libraries - Western Michigan University mary.okelly(a)wmich.edu<mailto:mary.okelly@wmich.edu>

Temporary type cards
by Rebekah Dobski 24 Jan '24

24 Jan '24

Hello there LibraryLand, I am considering creating a different card type that is specifically meant for people in foster care or shelters that have a more variable address as opposed to something more permanent. The literacy levels in our area are not the greatest so I am hoping that maybe the library can assist and provide some level of service. We have many foster kids who technically reside in our service area but do not always stay in the same location. We are also concerned about loss of books if they were to suddenly be moved somewhere else. Our library still collects fines that only accrue and cap at $5, though if there is a late book AND it goes missing/damaged, a patron would have to pay up to $5 + the replacement of a book. I don't want to create extra barriers to the library for children who are already in a rough situation. Do any libraries have a temporary card with perhaps more limited check out rules? Or any specific rules/guidelines/etc. that are different from a normal/regular card? I am hoping to crowdsource some information to bring to my next board meeting to hopefully get this type of card approved. Thanks in advance! :) Rebekah Dobski Library Director Hillsdale Community Library 11 E.
