Notable Books <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> UP Notable Book Club:* The Crystal Falls Community District Library in partnership with the U.P. Publishers & Authors Association (UPPAA) has scheduled author events with winners of the /UP Notable Book List/. The 34th event is with historian Jennifer McGraw who will take us through the odyssey of the remains of Father Jacques Marquette (1637 - 1675 A.D.), arguably one of the U.P's most influential clerical pioneers. Marquette was a French Jesuit missionary who founded Michigan's first European settlement, Sault Sainte Marie, and later founded Saint Ignace. In 1673, Marquette, with Louis Jolliet, an explorer born near Quebec City, was the first European to explore and map the northern portion of the Mississippi River Valley. /*When: */February 8th, 2024 at 7 pm Eastern / 6 pm Central /*Where: */on the Zoom platform -- please contact Evelyn Gathu in advance by egathu(a)crystalfallslibrary.org <mailto:egathu@crystalfallslibrary.org?subject=UPNotableBooks&body=Please-send-me-the-zoom-link>, or by phone at (906) 875-3344. We recommend you borrow a copy of these books from your local library or purchase from your local bookseller in advance to get the most out of these events. *JENNIFER MCGRAW *writes non-fiction history focusing on the 1600s and the Michilimackinac region. Her latest book, /The Unsolved Mysteries of Father Marquette's Many Graves/, discusses his time in the Great Lakes area, his life at Sault Sainte Marie and Saint Ignace, his trip down the Mississippi, and his death. It then goes on to extensively cover the multiple times that he was buried and dug up as well as the evidence that led people to conclude that the remains they had found were him. It tells of the treatment given to his bones when he was dug up which included scraping the flesh from them, likely cremating that flesh, and disarticulating his skeleton to prepare his bones for transport. This book follows other books or booklets she has authored including /Lawless Mackinac/ and /The David Haynes Dig/. She is also co-author of a collection of writings called /The Reminiscences of David Corp /(co-authored with Prentiss M. Brown, Jr.). /The Unsolved Mysteries of Father Marquette's Many Graves /is available at multiple area bookstores and gift shops. It can be purchased online at islandbookstore.com <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> or by contacting Island Bookstore on Mackinac Island at islandbookstore(a)gmail.com <mailto:islandbookstore@gmail.com>. "I was impressed with McGraw’s in-depth research and how she incorporated text from her sources, including /The Jesuit Relations/, to make this scholarly work both informative and entertaining reading. One highlight for me was the many details about Native American customs of the time and how the Jesuits tried not only to convert the Native Americans, but to get them to give up practices they disagreed with from living together before marriage to believing in the power of dreams. But one Native American custom was particularly important to Father Marquette’s story—related to the Odawa’s way of showing respect for their dead. Father Marquette died on May 18, 1675, as he was journeying across Lake Michigan on his way back to St. Ignace. Realizing he was not going to live to see again the mission where he had served, he asked to be set ashore near present-day Ludington, Michigan, where he died. He was buried there, but two years later, the Odawa he had served decided to return his remains to the mission at St. Ignace. McGraw notes that this was the deepest sign of respect they could have shown him, and how they exhumed and treated his body was one of their customs. They practiced a process called excarnation—McGraw describes it in detail—where they dug him up and removed the flesh from his bones. Then they transported the body to St. Ignace. McGraw notes that they treated Father Marquette with the same respect they showed to loved ones whose bodies or bones they would sometimes carry with them for decades." -- Tyler R. Tichelaar, /U.P. Children's Folklore/Fairy Tales/Mythology Collection
by Killian Weston 25 Jan '24

25 Jan '24

Hi Everyone, We are looking at changing how we organize/label our children's 398s. Right now, the entirety of our 398s is pulled to a section that is labeled as Folklore, Fairy Tales, & Mother Goose, but each book is still labeled and arranged by its Dewey number. It's not easily browsable, and we get a lot of requests that require going through the whole section to find similar materials. Right now, I'm looking at potentially sorting into broad categories of Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Mythology, and Mother Goose and then breaking those categories down further. I know there are other libraries that do this to some extent or another, and I'd love to hear from you about what works, what doesn't, etc. I'd love to hear from those at libraries where this is more recent change as well as those who have had that be the norm for awhile. Feel free to respond off list to this email or to my work email, westonki(a)btpl.org. If there's interest, I'm happy to share a compilation of responses later - just let me know! Thank you! MeL Minute: New Year, New Hobby?
by Laura Warren-Gross 25 Jan '24

25 Jan '24

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]In mid-December, Arielle Retting, an NPR reporter, shared some favorite hobbies of people in 2023<https://www.michiganradio.org/arts-life/2023-12-11/from-pickleball-to-catly…>. Since January is National Hobby Month, it is a great time to consider what hobbies might shape our leisure time in 2024. The Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) can provide ideas for new pastimes everyone can enjoy this year. An interest in technology might lead to the hobby of 3D printing. The cost of 3D printers and supplies has decreased and they have become commonplace in many homes and libraries. Hobbies & Crafts Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> includes several publications that provide ideas for 3D printing enthusiasts. "Getting Started With 3D Printing<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in FineScale Modeler<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> shows the steps one person used in the process of creating models. "3D Printing and Leathercraft<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> demonstrates how to make custom stamps for specialty leather items. Practical uses for 3D printers such as designing a prosthetic hand and printing a school in Malawi are described in "How 3-D Printing is Changing the World<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in Scholastic Scope<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> from Science Reference Center<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. This growing hobby blends technology and practicality and the only limit is your imagination. If you have gotten on the charcuterie<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> bandwagon (and who hasn’t?), then you definitely need a fancy board for serving. Hobbies & Crafts Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> shows the latest trend of using resin to fill a river between slabs of wood, creating beautiful art objects such as serving boards and coffee tables. "Resin to the Rescue<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>" in Woodworker's Journal<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> shows the process of combining wood and resin to make art. On a smaller scale, those proficient with a scroll saw can create charms for drink glasses using techniques shown in a Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> article titled "Citrus Glass Charms: Top Off Your Beverage with a Zesty Resin Accent<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>." Woodworking can offer solitary time to contemplate a new idea or can be planned as a group activity where everyone learns a new skill and leaves with something useful. For those who like to travel, planning road trips might be the perfect hobby in 2024. There are several recently published road trip books<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> reviewed in Library Journal<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> from Library & Information Science Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> that can help with plans for an epic trip. In addition, MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> has suggestions for a "Carolina Barbecue Road Trip<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>." If you want to try out options closer to home, Michigan Blue<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> includes a guide<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> for spending time in Ludington in west Michigan and an article<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> about adventures that can't be missed in Saginaw on the east side of the state. Finding ideas for a new hobby in 2024 is as easy as searching in any of MeL’s 70+ eResources. What have you been wanting to try? Let us know at MeLerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:MeLerhelp@mcls.org>. If you have any MeL eResources questions or issues, contact melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> for help. Brought to you by Laura Warren-Gross from the MeL Team.
