Who Did WHAT at Your Library?!

Everyone who has ever worked at a library knows that the public has no idea what kinds of things happen there on almost a daily basis. This is your chance to share the things that have happened at your library, and maybe even win a prize!! Have a great library story? The MLA Annual Conference Committee wants to hear from YOU! We are pleased to announce that one of this year's MLA Annual Conference Keynote speakers is THE Gene Ambaum of Unshelved, Library Comic! And he is offering at least one lucky library attendee the chance to have their library's story immortalized into a comic strip created by him. All 2024 Annual Conference attendees are invited to submit their favorite library stories. The best of these will be made into a comic strip by writer Gene Ambaum (Unshelved, Library Comic), who will be presenting at the 2024 MLA Annual Conference, and Library Comic's artist Willow Payne. (If there are a bunch of excellent stories, they may even pick more than one winner.) As part of his breakout session on Thursday, October 17th, Gene will share the runners up, with some insight into why some stories were better suited for comic strips than others, and unveil the winner(s) and the comic strip(s). The winner and the Michigan Library Association will get signed prints, and top runners-up will get prizes too. (Note that winners need not be present at the presentation to win, but they should be registered for the conference.) Write up your favorite library stories and submit them via this Google form (https://forms.gle/gimoBwjfx1P1ogP79) . Your stories can be funny, sad, crazy, weird, touching, bookish, or anything at all, really. He wants to hear about things you personally experienced; he particularly loves to hear the truth behind the library stories everyone has heard, especially when no one else knows what really happened. Don't submit a script, and don't feel the need to make your stories funny - sending him a brief story in your own words is enough. He'll contact you if he has questions. Everyone can submit up to five stories. Note: By submitting stories, you agree that the comic created from the winning stories will be (c) Ambauminable LLC. The comic(s) will run on librarycomic.com and its affiliated social media sometime during or after the MLA conference, and may appear in future Library Comic collections, with a note that they're "Based on a true story" but without other attribution. (If you win, you're free to tell the world you submitted the story, but if you don't want that widely known, rest assured that Gene won't tell anyone else who you are.) Program Recommendation - Detroit Unseen

Hi all, The Westland Library recently hosted Detroit urban explorer and photographer Bob Huston. His program, called "Detroit Unseen" chronicles history, decay, and, in some cases, rebirth of abandoned buildings around Detroit and beyond. It is a fascinating look at our city from a perspective we don't often see. Our patrons really enjoyed the presentation, and Bob is an engaging storyteller with a clear passion for what he does. In our conversation before and after the presentation, Bob let me know that he hadn't done a library presentation since COVID-19, and there has been so much change in the city since then. Many of these buildings are finally being restored. In preparation for our program, he was able to add content to his presentation that documented these renovations. It was incredibly cool to see the timeline of historic photos along with the abandoned and then restoration photos -- often photographs of the same architectural features or angles. Now that many of our patrons are going to experience these building renovations (Michigan Central, Book Tower, Wurlitzer Building etc.), I think it is an especially interesting time to learn about their history. Program Recommendation

Hello Library Friends, Our library recently hosted theater artist *Anna Marck* and her “*Women of the Watch*” presentation, and I honestly can’t recommend her enough. It’s such a unique program based on the history of female lighthouse keepers of the Great Lakes, but it blends in theatrical and musical elements. I received numerous post-presentation comments from patrons still gushing over her performance a week after we had her. The only unexpected thing which caught me off guard was when she asked me to sign a contract, which for me was the first time I’d been asked to sign one, but after reading it I felt it was fair. There’s some added legitimacy to the performance as well, because it was officially commissioned by the Lorenzo Cultural Center in Macomb, MI. Unique adult library programs with theatrical performative elements are starting to feel rare, so please reach out to her at anna.kamryn(a)gmail.com if interested. Holidays Around the World Program

Hello All, I am interested in hosting a Holidays Around the World program this December and would love to find someone who can cover several holidays in one program, however... I have absolutely no idea on where to start to find someone like this. I haven't had much luck with local universities in the past. I know I can reach out to local organizations and religious institutions for specific holidays (Hanukkah, etc.) But, I'd love to find one persons who can talk a little bit about several celebrations. Am I dreaming too big? Any ideas on where to begin my search would be most appreciated. Thanks! Overdose rescue and CPR training (free!)

Hi all, If you haven't yet, I highly encourage you to take advantage of the free CPR/NARCAN training offered by the Americorps Community Training for Overdose Rescue Act (ACT) program through Wayne State University. Trainers came to the library and provided one-hour CPR and NARCAN training and set up a free NARCAN dispenser for patrons. Milan Public Library Substitute Reference Librarian Job Summary: The substitute reference librarian provides reference service, reader’s advisory and assistance with public workstations, MEL and other electronic resources, software and internet searching. A substitute librarian may be called upon to provide support for programs, displays, and other projects as needed. Duties: * Conducting reference interviews to determine patron’s needs. * Providing reference and reader’s advisory service to all patrons as needed, in-person, by email or telephone. * Assisting library users with the online catalog, MEL databases, Overdrive, Hoopla, E-readers etc. * Assisting with program support as needed. * Maintaining proper learning environment through enforcement of library policies and procedures * Other duties as assigned. Requirements: * MLS from an ALA accredited library school. * Ability to provide high quality library service to patrons of all ages. * Demonstrated knowledge of public library materials and resources. * Ability to prioritize duties and tasks and work independently. * Experience with Microsoft Office, Firefox and Chrome. * Availability to work shifts of 2-6 hours (sometimes on short notice). The Library is open 44 hours per week). Physical Requirements: * Seeing, hearing, speaking, keyboarding, using technology (computers, scanners, printers, copiers). * Bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting. * Carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. * Standing, walking, sitting for periods of time.
