Good morning, Michigan! We are very excited to announce that statewide registration is now open for this year's UPRLC Annual Conference. Our theme this year is Bold Library Futures and it will be held on Wednesday, September 25th and Thursday, September 26th at Bay Community College in Escanaba. https://www.baycollege.edu/ This year's conference is two full days of keynotes, breakouts, Trustee Training, and a reception at the fabulous Escanaba Public Library. Sessions are geared towards all levels of library staff, and focus on emerging technology; public, school, and academic library sessions; growing partnerships, and diversity in library services. POSITION: Library Director *Swanton Public Library *is a school district library serving residents in both Fulton and Lucas Counties, with an annual budget of about $700,000, with revenue from both state funding and a local property tax levy. The Director reports to a 7-member Board of Trustees. *DUTIES*: The Director is responsible for all aspects of library services and works with the Board of Trustees to determine the strategic direction and policies for the library. The Director serves as a highly visible leader within the library, its service area and the library community, leading a dedicated, hard-working and independent staff of 5 full-time and 4 part-time employees. The Director is to ensure courteous, prompt, and comprehensive service to all library patrons in a cost-effective manner consistent with library policies. *QUALIFICATIONS*: The candidate should possess excellent management, public relations, budget, facility and communication skills and believe that the patrons and the staff are the most important assets to the Library. ● ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science with 3 or more years of postgraduate experience in a public library including administrative and supervisory experience preferred ● Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form. ● Ability to effectively use automated library systems, computers, and other library technologies. ● Effective interpersonal skills consisting of creative and diplomatic management abilities. ● Community engagement and development experience. *COMPENSATION*: Salary range of $50,000-$62,000. MeLCat Modernization Downtime on July 23 - Reminder

Hi all, The central MeLCat server will be updated early on July 23rd. Users will not be able to access MeLCat or place MeLCat requests. The MeL eResources will be up during this time, however, during the downtime, users from unrecognized IP addresses cannot use their MeLCat login information (aka barcode) for authentication. They can use their Michigan Driver’s License for access. We will let you know when MeLCat is available again. Questions? The application window for Conversation Camp for Library Leaders closes on Friday, July 26th! Selected applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the end of July. CONVERSATION CAMP FOR LIBRARY LEADERS About the Program The Library of Michigan invites up to 50 public and academic library directors, managers, or supervisors to participate in a Conversation Camp<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/ce/financialmanagement…>: led by Library Development Manager, Michelle Bradley. This two-day, in-person program will include two workshops: Conversations Worth Having, and Strategic Conversations. Conversations are at the heart of everything we do in libraries. They are key to effective communications, leadership, strategy, high performance, strong relationships, and the health of our organizations and communities. These courses are grounded in Appreciative Inquiry, a widely used positive change approach. Day 1: Conversations Worth Having for Library Leaders At the end of this course, participants will: 1. Use generative questions to shift the dynamics of personal and workplace communication problems. 2. Experience flipping negative conversations to conversations worth having. 3. Use effective feedback strategies with common workplace situations. Day 2: Strategic Conversations for Library Leaders At the end of this course, participants will have the tools to engage teams from a whole systems perspective in conversations to: 1. Address short- and long-term challenges, systems, and innovation. 2. Explore strengths, dynamic capabilities, and opportunities. 3. Develop or re-evaluate organization's values, vision, and mission statements. 4. Set goals, objectives, strategies, and action plans. 5. Clarify roles, relationships, and expectations. 6. Track progress through regular cycles of action learning. Conversation Camp will take place on September 4th and September 5th, 2024, at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. LM will provide participants with a stipend to cover travel and lodging costs. In addition to the stipend, LM will cover the cost of course materials and course content, a $1,498.00 per person value.
