Programming Recommendation: Nature Discovery
by Director 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

Good afternoon, I would like to highly recommend Jim McGrath from Nature Discovery for your next live animals presentation. His animals are native to Michigan and his presentations are engaging- we had attendees stay almost an entire hour talking with him after the program ended! We had his all ages "Snakes Alive!" presentation at our library last week and he brought a variety of Michigan snakes with him to share, along with a PowerPoint filled with photos of the snakes he had with him for those in the back of the room as an additional visual aid. He has a section near the end of the program where he lets attendees handle the snakes themselves, which was very exciting for our patrons. This program is always immensely popular with our community and is highly attended. The program cost us $250, which was very reasonable for having a smaller programming budget. He is based out of Williamston, MI but is willing to travel all over the state. He also has some funding to help cover travel and accommodation expenses. You can contact him at naturedisc87(a)gmail.com or call (517) 655-5349. His website can be found here <http://naturediscovery.net/index.html>. It was abundantly clear that he has a passion for educating the public on snakes and other Michigan species. He does this for the benefit of the public, not to make a profit. Snakes Alive! would be perfect for those who have a snake phobia as well as Michigan snake lovers. I have not booked him for his other programs, but plan to do so in the future. Best, Kelsey Rutkowski *--------------------------------------* *Library Director* *Indian River Area Library* 3546 S Straits Hwy PO Box 160 Indian River, MI 49749 (231) 238-8581 indianriverlibrary.org

Portable blu-ray player for checkout?
by SBBDL Information 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

Hi all, I have another collection question! We've had decent interest from patrons in a portable dvd/blu-ray player to check out. Scrolling through all the different brands of players out there, it's a little overwhelming. Does anyone have a dvd or blu-ray player in their collection? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Would you get another brand/kind if you had to do it again? Insights, opinions, and pros/cons are all very welcome! As always, I'm happy to compile any responses I get. Many thanks and happy Monday! -- Autumn Anderson she/her Assistant Director Suttons Bay Bingham District Library PO Box 340 416 Front Street Suttons Bay, MI 49682 231-271-3512 sbbdl.org

UPDATE: bike lock for checkout
by SBBDL Information 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

Thanks to everyone who shared their experience with bike locks at their library! It seems like most folks have them available to use at the library rather than put them in the collection for circulation, which makes sense. Attached are the compiled responses, for those who might be interested. -- Autumn Anderson she/her Assistant Director Suttons Bay Bingham District Library PO Box 340 416 Front Street Suttons Bay, MI 49682 231-271-3512 sbbdl.org

Invitation to participate in a general libraries social media video
by Katie Rothley 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

Hi all, Would anyone be interested in doing a collaborative video (or series) just to promote libraries in general? This is completely voluntary. We would feature parts of the library by different libraries and then edit the videos together for anyone and everyone to share on their channels. It would be to just promote how incredible our collections, services, and events are, and that would be the message. Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in, <https://forms.gle/cz1C2gUS52ZNEpqR8> I'm happy to coordinate it. (This is separate from the Summer Reading Collab Video). If you have any ideas on how to structure this, please let me know. I'm open to help and anything, really. If you are in a consortium that is not TLN, please pass along this invitation in your listserv. Thanks! *For more info, keep reading.* *For the video part, you'd want to closely follow these steps:* - We would plan a script(s) & storyboard(s) (impacts, benefits, awesomeness, services) - Record in Portrait - Do not add captions - we'd do this during editing the videos together so it's consistent - Share your black & white logo with white background - jpg or png - Use a wearable/mobile mic for better sound, or film in less busy places or during times when it's quiet - Ensure there is good lighting - Make sure you are recording in mirror mode/filter so anything you are sharing is not backward in the recording - Save your recording as a .mp4 or .mov format - those are easier to work with -- Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Public Relations Librarian Northville District Library 212 West Cady Street Northville, MI 48167 (248) 349-3020 <callto:(248)+349-3020> ext. 221 https://northvillelibrary.org

E-Rate Case Oral Arguments before the US Supreme Court on Wednesday March 26
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 24 Mar '25

24 Mar '25

Hello: This is an FYI that on Wednesday March 26, The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case Federal Communications Commission v. Consumer's Research. This is the case that could impact the E-Rate program for schools and public libraries, as well as other programs funded by the Universal Service Fund. The argument brought by Consumer's Research, a non-profit organization, is that the FCC, which manages and oversees the Universal Service Fund, delegated certain responsibilities to the USF in violation of the nondelegation doctrine (the nondelegation doctrine is a constitutional principle which basically says that one branch or agency of government may not delegate statutory or constitutionally required responsibilities to another branch or agency). The current case is an appeal of a 5th circuit case (the nondelegation doctrine argument is bolstered by the overturning of the Chevron Doctrine which required courts to defer to agency decision making regarding interpretations of their statutory duties and requirements). Details on the issues in this case can be found Federal Communications Commission v. Consumers' Research - SCOTUSblog<https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/federal-communications-commissi…> A useful summary can also be found https://www.naco.org/news/naco-legal-advocacy-federal-communications-commis… The Supreme Court live streams oral arguments on its website: https://www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/live.aspx The session begins at 10:00am EST.
