Looking for a Michigan author on Gardening...
by Jolene Faber 26 Mar '25

26 Mar '25

Looking for any leads or lists of authors from Michigan that specialize in gardening or related topic. Our library is partnering with the local Garden Club and would like to host an event with an author. Our goal is to keep the author local to Michigan so if you know of any Michigan authors that have written on gardening or anything related we would love their name and contact info if possible. Thank you in advance! Jolene Faber Administrative Assistant Bay County Library System 500 Center Ave. Bay City, MI 48708 (989)894-2837 ext. 2225

Thank you to all the responses so far on a Michigan author on gardening! I would like to update my posting by adding any recommendations that are not Bevin Cohen. We agree with everyone that he is a phenomenal author and speaker as we have had him at our library several times. We are looking to expand to other authors besides him. Thank you all! I am so very sorry to hear about Rob. He was a great mentor when I did my internship at the JFK Jr. location. He was such a kind man, and we had many great discussions about sci-fi books, and his beloved dogs. He will be dearly missed. Jody Helme-Day

Program Recommendation: Dave Birkett
by Mick Howey 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

Hello Michlib! Last night Baldwin hosted Detroit Free Press Lions beat writer and author of *The Detroit Lions: An Illustrated Timeline *Dave Birkett. The program went great! It was well attended, attendees asked a lot of questions, and Dave was super easy to work with. It was a hybrid program and Dave made sure those on Zoom felt included. His email is dbirkett(a)freepress.com. His fee was $100 + mileage, which for us came to $135.00. Please let me know if you have any questions. Small Libraries & Kanopy
by Justine Peterson 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

Hello Libraryland! I was wondering if there are any small (Class I and II) libraries that use Kanopy? What subscription option did you choose? Do you like the service? How do patrons feel about it? I want to float the idea by my board, but I wanted to see what other libraries our size are feeling first! Thank you in advance, *Justine Peterson* (she/her) Library Director Seville Township Library Riverdale, MI 48877 P: 989.833.7776 seville.michlibrary.org

Unfortunate News on A Longtime Member of the Library Community
by Michael Mccaffery 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

Hello Late last week, our adult services librarian, Rob Butler suffered a stroke that left him hospitalized. Unfortunately, as of 10:53 pm last night, Rob passed. He was a performer, librarian, writer, health advocate, animal supporter and friend to many. He helped craft what the Dearborn Heights Library is today. His family thanks us all for the many well wishes and all the support from library staff and patrons. He will be added to the memorial plaque at John F. Kennedy Jr. library and will have a display reminiscent of his craft and talents. John F. Kennedy Jr. library will be having a memorial gathering for those on the memorial plaque on a date to be determined. I will pass along any information I receive on arrangements. May he rest in peace. Sign up now - MiLibraryQuest: a teen virtual mystery
by MiLibrary Quest 25 Mar '25

25 Mar '25

Hello, Michigan Librarians! Your library is invited to participate in the Summer 2025 MiLibraryQuest for teens. This summer’s Quest will feature a virtual art heist which will tie in with the CSLP’s theme of Color Our World - and be a fun Quest regardless of your summer theme! Teens will solve a series of challenges (logic puzzles, riddles, codes, etc.) to determine the location of the stolen artwork. They can participate in the Quest independently online. If you would like to incorporate an in-person program, that option is available. It is SUPER easy for a library to participate. You only need to publicize the event to your teens (using promotional materials we have designed or your own) and award a prize (of your choice - very small is fine!) to at least one participant from your library. Recent Quests have had between 110 and 175 teens from across the state submit entries. Details: This year’s Quest will begin on June 16 and end on July 31 All you have to do as a participating library is: - Promote the event to your teens (Promotional templates will be provided by the Quest team.) - Award at least one prize to a teen from your library who completes the Quest (The prize can be as small or as big as you choose. Examples of what other libraries have awarded are in #8 of our FAQs here <https://bit.ly/4kWhon1>.) OPTIONAL things your library can do: - OPTIONAL: If you would like to have a part of the Quest on your website, you can sign up to have a hint on your library’s website. - OPTIONAL: You can host an in-person program for teens to solve the Quest. Libraries can sign up to participate here (https://bit.ly/Quest2025SignUp) by May 1 (to participate) or by April 10 (if you’d also like a clue on your website). Teens will: - Access the Quest on the MiLibraryQuest website. - Complete the Quest (on their own or with friends) either online or in-person at a library. - As they complete each stage of the Quest, fill out the online form provided by the Quest to enter to win a prize from their local library. Additional information is in the FAQs here: https://bit.ly/SummerQuest2025FAQs If your library would like to participate, please sign up by May 1 (April 10, if you’d like to have a clue on your website) here: https://bit.ly/Quest2025SignUp If you have any questions, please email MiLibraryQuest(a)gmail.com. A little history: Following library closures in spring 2020 and a shift to virtual programming, a group of librarians from throughout the state began meeting to collaborate on virtual teen programming. We created MiLibraryQuest, a virtual scavenger hunt, for all teens throughout the state as a summer event. We have now offered eight Quests with more than one-fourth of Michigan libraries systems and hundreds of teens participating. Current Quests maintain the virtual option and include in-person options now that we are back to in-person programs at our libraries. We hope you will be a part of MiLibraryQuest this summer!
