Library 2.013 Worldwide Virtual Conference- Free

Hello Everyone, I recently posted a question asking about "Tablets in Libraries" and came across a free virtual conference on such a topic: "So Your Library Wants To Lend iPads" by Heather Westhaver from Burling Public Library in Ontario, Canada. This session will be available on Friday, October 18 from 12pm-1pm EST. There are a lot more sessions than just this opportunity. "Library 2.013 Worldwide Virtual Conference. The third annual global conversation about the future of libraries is scheduled for October 18-19, 2013. The conference will once again be held entirely online around the clock in multiple languages and time zones. Everyone is invited to participate in this FREE forum designed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among information professionals worldwide. To be kept informed of the latest conference news and updates, please join the Library 2.0 network. You do not need to join this network to attend, but doing so will also allow you to correspond with the presenters and other members, and to comment on sessions and discussions. NEW for 2013! The Library 2.013 conference will feature two additional themed conference strands: 1) Doctoral Student Research and 2) Library and Information Center "Tours." We encourage doctoral students to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to present their research and hone their online presentation skills. We also heard that many of you want to "see" libraries from around the globe. Presenters will take conference attendees on virtual tours of their libraries or information centers. Update on AWE Discount Pricing Opportunity

Here's the latest news from Jeremy Link at AWE: We’ve reached a count of 26 AWE computers & tablets from Michigan libraries for the Group Purchase. This puts us into the next discount level (25-49 units) and a price of $2,835. I’ll begin sending order forms to the libraries that verbally committed at the $2,835 price. I’ll ask that the libraries sign the form confirming the order and either fax or scan/email the form back to me. If we reach the last discount level at 50+ units then we will adjust all signed orders down to the final price of $2678 before sending the invoice. Some libraries have asked if they could commit now and pay later. The discount opportunity is available through November 15, 2013. If your library commits by November 15, AWE is willing to extend payment terms for 60 days so the payment due date would be January 15. Note from Angie: We are working with AWE to determine the next discount window so libraries that are unable to pay by January 15 for this opportunity will be able to budget for the 2014 opportunity. We will let you know once the 2014 discount window has been determined. Young Authors' Festival and Writing Contest at Univ. of Michigan-Dearborn

Help celebrate Henry Ford's 150th birthday! The College of Education, Health, and Human Services and the Mardigian Library at the University of Michigan-Dearborn are sponsoring a Young Authors' Festival and Writing Contest. The festival's theme is "Henry's Dream." The Writing Contest is for children in grades 4, 5, and 6. The contest theme is: "What are your dreams for your future? How do you plan to reach your dreams?" One winner from each grade will receive a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, and the grand prize winner will receive a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card. Carol Hagen and Matt Faulkner, author and illustrator of "The Night Henry Ford Met Santa," will talk to children about writing and illustrating a book. Faculty and pre-service teachers will lead break-out sessions with activities along with tips and techniques for writing and supporting children in their writing. Original art work from Matt Faulkner, along with art work from other illustrators, will be on display. Ms. Hagen and Mr. Faulkner, both from Michigan, will be available for autographs. Copies of "The Night Henry Ford Met Santa" will be available for purchase. The event is FREE and open to the public. Conservation and Collections Care Camp on Nov. 20

The Michigan Collections Network will be hosting a Conservation and Collections Care Camp at MSU library on Nov. 20 from 10 to 4. People with interest and responsibilities in caring for our physical collections are welcome to attend and encouraged to participate and present. Current presentations include such topics: treating a county atlas, building a quick custom, cardboard, clamshell box, managing conservation without a conservator, creating and using an DIY humidity chamber to flatten documents and more... All participants will be encouraged, but not required, to present something from their own efforts to care for their collections. Presentations from 5 to 45 minutes are welcome. There may be a small cost to help cover lunch. Registration is limited to 40. Good Morning Everyone!As we all prepare for the Michigan Library Association's Annual Conference starting this evening, we would like you to start thinking about nominating that special library, librarian, and Trustees/Friends for the 2014 Loleta Fyan Small/Rural Libraries Conference for the following awards: Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award: Recognizes a librarian who is an outstanding leader in the profession. The Librarian of the Conference has made a significant contribution to his/her library and has invested him/herself in efforts to bring about positive change in the small/rural library community. This award goes to an individual currently employed in a Michigan library. Trustee/Friend Award: Given to a Trustee or Friend of a small or rural library for distinguished service to rural library development on the local, state, regional or national level. Patron Services Award: Recognizes a librarian from a small or rural library who has made significant contributions to and a positive impact on library service to patrons through outstanding program(s) or services. And again this year we are have the pleasure to recognize one library through an award sponsored by the Roger and June Mendel Fund! The Small/Rural Library Excellence Award is a cash award of $1000 given to the Michigan Small and/or Rural Library that exemplifies excellence in customer service and community involvement.
