I am calling upon group expertise. Our nascent Bath Township Library Center (now officially open!) has received many donated books. We are wondering what you do to value donations if the donor wants a receipt for tax purposes. I found these values at http://www.mmartone.com/?page_id=30Book, children’s paperback — $0.50 to $1.00 Book, adult paperback — $1.00 to $3.00 These seem a little low to me, especially for some of the mint condition things we have received. First, I want to thank Christine Hage, Stephanie Mason and Bruce MacDonald for almost instantly replying to my last email that we should not set a value on donated books, but rather provide the donor with a letter stating the numbers of hardbacks, paperbacks, etc. and letting them decide at tax time the value of their donation. This is what we will do. Thanks! Now I am wondering what to do when we are cataloging these items. Should we assign a value that people would have to pay if they lost or damaged the book or should we not charge patrons if the book was donated?? Should we just charge them processing costs?? Guess you can tell that in my 33 years working in a library I never did cataloging.... Linda Neely Bath MI

Please post the following: I have the books "Look Again!" and "Look! Look! Look!" (both by Hoban) in my collection, and they both need to be replaced. Does anyone have suggestions that are similar in concept? They are both puzzle books where the reader tries to identify an object from just a small portion of that object. Hello, Gail Carolyn Sirna is an award-winning embroiderer and regular columnist for Needlepoint Now. She has been teaching needlepoint for over 25 years. She is also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from America’s National Academy of Needle Arts in 2004. Ms. Sirna will be with us on Thursday, November 14 at 6:00 to present “In Praise of the Needlewoman,” which consists of a slide presentation of paintings of women (and a few men) who are sewing, knitting, making lace or embroidering as well as a small exhibit of images of stitchers. Submit Your Proposal for the 2014 Rural Library Conference

It is time to begin thinking about the 2014 Rural Libraries Conference. The event will be held April 30-May 2, 2014 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The Library of Michigan and the Rural Libraries Conference Program Committee encourage you to submit a proposal for the conference. Submit your proposal here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 The Rural Libraries Conference has a long tradition of providing a forum for the staff, trustees, and advocates of Michigan's small and rural libraries to share, learn and be inspired to provide the best library service to their communities. The 2014 RLC theme is Partnerships, People, Progress. Let's come together as a community to share our collective knowledge of imaginative, resourceful and successful library practices. How can you contribute? Bring your tried and true as well as your new and inventive practices to share with your Michigan library colleagues. If it's working well for you, chances are good that others could benefit from hearing about it. We will be showcasing up to 50 presentations at the 2014 conference. The RLC Program Committee invites you to consider the following conference tracks as you design your program proposal: * Library Technology or Digital Literacy * Services to Individual Populations (youth, seniors, unemployed, entrepreneurs, etc.) * Library Programming * Engagement, Collaboration & Partnerships * Administration and Management Presenters will be required to provide an electronic copy of session materials by April 1, 2014 that will be on a flash drive to all conference attendees.
