Additional support site for MeL
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 20 Mar '15

20 Mar '15

Greetings, Gale is now hosting a site with some specific supporting materials for MeL at: http://galesupport.com/mel/. In particular, the ability to customize promotional materials to support Gale products is right on the site. You can add things like your own library's website, QR code and graphic, and then have materials with those customizations such as posters, bookmarks and tent cards printed and sent to your library. This is Gale ProMo that you may already be familiar with and the log-in information is right on the screen. Also available on this site are the direct URLs to all of the MeL databases should MeL and/or MCLS be experiencing down time and you need access to individual databases. Please note that the Gale list of MeL resources is also a very neat and tidy listing of all the MeL databases broken down by vendor in a way that makes it very simple to confirm that you have all of your sTudLYCAps in place for naming these resources on your own site as well as simply learning which products are from where. In addition, all of the database graphics are available on the site in two sizes. You can save the icons over onto your own server space, or Gale provides a link from where they are hosting the icon (along with alt text) that you can simply pick up from clicking on "Icons" in the global navigation bar at the top of the website. Many thanks to Gale for developing and hosting this suite of services for the Michigan eLibrary. Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan 702 W. Kalamazoo St. P.O. digitization results

Thank you all for your input! The following is a list of the responses: AmeriScan 50690 Rizzo Dr. Shelby Twp, MI 48315 586-532-9995 Graphic Sciences Madison Heights, MI 1-800-397-6620 Kent Records Management Grand Rapids, MI 1-800-536-6681 Sanilac Computer Products 75 South Elk Street Sandusky, MI 48471 810-648-3200 msoflin(a)gmail.com OCI Yearbook Program 405-527-0833 ocirc(a)doc.state.ok.us For digitizing newspapers, check with the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University. Your contact will be Frank Boles. Le Roy G. Barnett I have a take on digitization of obits from various newspapers. I used to be the digitization coordinator at WMUs digitization center. Copyright was an issue from many of the papers. They would not give us permission to scan them and put them up on the Internet. I see their point. When you scan them and 'publish' them that is seen as crossing a line. Clipping them and having them in the library is a much lesser thing than putting them online. (we think they were looking at how to get people to come to their websites instead - more visitors means more advertisers . . . ?) We are not sure. This was 8 or more years ago. It my have been that we were helping a smaller library do the project. Just be sure to look at it all the way through before you do all of the work and then cant put it on the web. Even if the paper is no longer publishing, somebody, owns the rights (a parent company, descendants of the owner, etc.) Ask a copyright expert, or get permission in writing - save the paperwork that you 'did due diligence' to ask permission of the correct rights holder. We could not get the rights and it killed the project. It is a big grey area, even if you are not doing it for a profit, it is important. Lou Ann Morgan Communication Coordinator Administration, University Libraries The best obituary index I have seen belongs to the Public Libraries of Saginaw. I think it is a home grown program, go to the Public Libraries of Saginaw website then go to obituaries and try it out. You can contact Trish Burns as far as who owns it and if copies are available. John Sheridan, Vicksburg Farmington Hills writing from alumni account (I read lists from here). We use graphic sciences. They can microfilm too. They are used by Northville (their stuff has won prizes and they have stuff to help, I will forward the slides from that recent event from my work account. Meantime: www.northvillehistory.org<http://www.northvillehistory.org> and http://www.scanittoday.com/ Mary Carleton I can't say that we've made any decisions about how to progress, but we are more knowledgeable about what needs to be done BEFORE we digitize... So excited...just had to share!
by Joann Crater 19 Mar '15

19 Mar '15

Walking through the grocery store a little bit ago, there was a cart at the end of an aisle filled with plastic tablecloths.....for a quarter each!!! Purple, green, pink and yellow. Summer reading program immediately pops into my head (plenty of room up there..lol!!) and I'm wondering how many capes can we get out of each one? Then I decided it didn't matter, for 25 cents & I can get at least 4....so I proceeded to get my "deal for the day". I did leave a few for anyone who may want to just cover their picnic table cheaply. Joann @ Hudson

MeL Minute - Books & Authors
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 19 Mar '15

19 Mar '15

Hello all, Looking for your next great read? A new feature in the MeL database Books & Authors<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=BNA> is both fun and informative when it comes to finding a good book. WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN lets you browse by selecting any 3 from choices under Character, Subject, Location, and Time Period. Type or choose from a drop down menu and watch as the database responds with a visual representation of your search terms. Hundreds of characters (WHO), activities (WHAT), locations (WHERE), and Time Periods (WHEN) can be combined to reveal titles that fit the selected criteria. Combining Alternative Worlds (WHAT), with Michigan (WHERE), and 21st Century AD (WHEN), I find there is a title that matches all 3 criteria! (who would have guessed!) A bonus to this useful search is that the results link to MeLCat<http://mel.org/melcat> so staff and patrons can check availability of their newly discovered treasures. Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your public service colleagues. Eunice Eunice C. Borrelli, Michigan eLibrary Internet Librarian Library of Michigan/Michigan Dept. of Education, 702 W. Open Meetings Act Follow-Up
by Kat Boyer 19 Mar '15

19 Mar '15

Thank you everyone for the information! Here is what I found: An amendement to the Michigan Open Meetings Act was made effective Dec. 31, 2012. PA 528 amended Section 5 of the OMA by adding additional notice requirements for certain meetings that are open to the public. These provisions deal with informing the public about meetings through use of the institutions website. Kat Boyer Interim Director Benton Harbor Public Library
