Can you help? We need judges for the Michigan History Day State Finals on April 25th!
by Larry J. Wagenaar 19 Mar '15

19 Mar '15

Andrea Lorion, our State Coordinator for History Day, has asked me to share the email below with my personal contacts. We need 125 people to assist with judging at the Michigan History Day State Finals in Dewitt MI on Saturday, April 25th and we still need quite a few judges. If your schedule allows would you consider helping. You do NOT need to be an expert. If you have never judged before you will be part of a three-person team along with someone who has done it before. It only takes a minute to fill in the online form - and I guarantee you will have a wonderful time speaking with students who are on fire for history!! Larry Larry J. Wagenaar Executive Director, Historical Society of Michigan Publisher, Michigan History Magazine L3C 5815 Executive Dr. Lansing, MI 48911 Phone: (517) 324-1828 Fax: (517) 324-4370 Email: wagenaar(a)hsmichigan.org Website: www.hsmichigan.org From: Andrea Lorion [mailto:lorion@hsmichigan.org] Sent: Monday, March 16, 2015 3:20 PM To: wagenaar(a)hsmichigan.org Greetings, It is that time of the year to start thinking about judging at the Michigan History Day 2015 State Finals. We would love to have you as a judge! The Historical Society of Michigan will be hosting the State Finals on Saturday, April 25th at DeWitt High School in DeWitt, MI. Judges need to be available from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You will receive a free t-shirt and lunch for your time and effort. Some of you have judged in the past while some have never judged before. At the beginning of the day, you will receive an orientation to the judging process. The judge orientation serves to inform you of everything you need to know about the competition. We will equip you with evaluation sheets, give you specific directions on how to judge, and make sure all of your questions are answered. This is a great opportunity to interact with students and see some great history projects! As a judge, you will review entries in a given category as part of a judging team. You will get to conduct a brief interview with the students, write comments for the students to review, and help select the finalists. All judge decisions are final. The finalists will advance on to the national level. Judges will evaluate student projects in the following categories: papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, and websites. Exhibits and performances are evaluated on the day of the competition. Papers, websites, and documentaries are reviewed in advance before interviewing students at the competition. Papers will be emailed to judges, websites will be reviewed through weebly.com, and documentaries will be reviewed through Google Drive. If you plan to judge, you will need to register by March 30th. The online judge registration form can be found on our website at http://www.hsmichigan.org/mhd/judges/. Click on the red link that says, "Click here to register to be a judge for the 2015 competition!" You can also call me at (517) 324-1828 to register. We will confirm you via email in early April and send you detailed event information. If you are judging papers, websites, or documentaries, we will notify you and send the entries to you 7-10 days in advance. If you cannot attend this year but know of someone who may be interested in judging, their names and contact information would be gladly welcomed. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Additional information about Michigan History Day can be found on our website at http://www.hsmichigan.org/mhd/. We hope you can join us this year! Thank you for your support of Michigan History Day! NEWS RELEASE: RECORD-SETTING NUMBERS ATTEND HISTORY CONFERENCE
by HSM Web 19 Mar '15

19 Mar '15

Historical Society of Michigan 5815 Executive Dr. Lansing, MI 48911 Contact: Nancy Feldbush (517) 324-1828 <mailto:feldbush@hsmichigan.org> feldbush(a)hsmichigan.org For Immediate Release RECORD-SETTING NUMBERS ATTEND HISTORY CONFERENCE Nearly 700 attendees-a record-breaking number-flocked to this year's Michigan in Perspective: The Local History Conference hosted by the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM). The conference was held in Sterling Heights, Mich., on Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, at the Sterling Inn and drew attendees from all over the state. A robust lineup of subjects and speakers, expanded content and a new Saturday afternoon event combined to make the conference a roaring success. "Our attendance was up by 35 percent," said HSM Executive Director Larry Wagenaar. "That increase is mainly due to the planning committee's efforts to create content that appeals to a diverse yet history-minded audience." New for 2015 was the Saturday afternoon Gala: Loosening the Laces: The History of Michigan Told Through Fashion. This unprecedented event, presented by Fashion and the Automobile, brought together more than 60 reenactors and models to portray 300 years of Michigan's past. "Our closing Gala was a brand-new event for the conference," added Wagenaar. "From voyageurs and Woodland Indians to Civil War and World War I soldiers and civilians to flappers and Rosie the Riveter, the Gala brought Michigan's history to life like never before." The largest of the Society's three conferences, the Michigan in Perspective: The Local History Conference is open to anyone interested in state or regional history. The conference is held annually in the Wayne/Oakland/Macomb tri-county area. This year's major sponsors were Meijer, the Detroit Historical Society, and the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House. More information can be found on HSM's website: <http://www.hsmichigan.org/> www.hsmichigan.org. The Society also hosts two other annual conferences: the Upper Peninsula History Conference and the Annual Meeting and State History Conference. This year's Upper Peninsula History Conference will be held June 26-28, 2015, in Ironwood, and the State History Conference will be held Sept. 25-27, 2015, in Saginaw. The Historical Society of Michigan is the state's oldest cultural organization, founded in 1828 by territorial governor Lewis Cass and explorer Henry Schoolcraft. A nongovernmental nonprofit, the Society focuses on publications, conferences, education, awards and recognition programming, and support for local history organizations to preserve and promote Michigan's rich history. # # # This e-mail is sent to our members and friends to keep you updated on historical activities and opportunities to learn more about our state's history. Open Meetings Act Question
by Kat Boyer 18 Mar '15

18 Mar '15

Hello everyone, I am the new Interim Director at the Benton harbor Public Library and I have a question about the Open Meetings Act. I know that a draft of the most recent board meeting minutes must be made available to the public within 8 days of the meeting, but I know there was an addendum to the act that specified instructions for draft minutes on a website, does anyone have that information? I've misplaced the copy of it that our former director gave me. Thank you, Kat Boyer Interim Director Benton Harbor Public Library
