State Librarian's Excellence Award application deadline extended through Sept 19

Dear Library Directors, Trustees, Institution Administrators, and Library Users, The State Librarian's Excellence Award application deadline has been extended through September 19. The State Librarian's Excellence Award recognizes a Michigan Library that best exemplifies excellence in customer service. Roger Mendel is the sponsor the $2,000 cash prize awarded to the winning library. Additionally, the Foundation provides two $500 cash prizes given to the runners-up recognized with Citations of Excellence. All three award-winners will receive trophies for public display. The criteria is described on the attached nomination form. Winners will be announced at the State Librarian's Luncheon on Thursday, October 16, 2014, during the 2014 Michigan Library Association Annual Conference in Grand Rapids. Library directors, trustees, library users, or administrators may make nominations. See the nomination form for details of submission requirements. Michigan Reads Launch Press Release

Please see the 2014 Michigan Reads press release attached! The Library of Michigan and the Pleasant View Magnet School in Lansing are kicking off the 2014 program today, Monday, September 8th with author Kwame Alexander and State Superintendent of Education Mike Flanagan. We will be promoting the program through September and October with 11 more library and school visits with Kwame and illustrator Tim Bowers throughout the state. All the program kits have been mailed to public libraries, K-2 school buildings, Head Start and Great Start Readiness programs. As you do your children's programming this fall, please include Michigan Reads. Send us pictures and stories as well! Outdoor Movie in Westland

The Public Library of Westland will host an outdoor movie event, courtesy of the Outside the Box program and RedBox, on Friday, September 12th, starting at 7 p.m. Families are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 to see the results of our Muppet-drawing contest (entries due 9/11), work on puzzles, and create a Kermit the Frog craft.
