New Continuing Education program for librarians from the Library of Michigan

The Library of Michigan is launching a new program to support libraries' efforts to provide quality services and programming in their communities. A major element of excellent service is empowering library staff to learn and implement new skills and best practices. The new Librarian Continuing Education program helps by providing financial support for library staff continuing education. Michigan public, academic and school library staff are eligible to apply for continuing education stipends. You will find a criteria, timeline and application link there. Staff from eligible libraries may apply at any time and may request from $200 to $1,500. Requests will be reviewed each quarter as listed in the program criteria and timeline. The first review of applications will be the beginning of this October and quarterly thereafter. Highly Recommended Program for Libraries

Last week Morton Township Library hosted Teresa Irish, author of A Thousand Letters Home to present "The Journey of the Letters”. We had over 80 people in attendance.We contacted her because of the many wonderful recommendations on Michlib.She tells the story of her father through the letters he wrote home while serving in WWII. Labels for Early Literacy

Hi, This is a multifaceted question How do you define a literacy kit? Does it need a book? Or can it be an "educational resource"? If you do have literacy kits, how are they cataloged in a way that patrons can find them easily? Do you label your kits beyond the library name? For example, good for fine motor development, builds vocabulary? We are an ECRR library so we are wondering if we should label our materials as TALKING, SINGING? One idea we have is to put parenting tips on our educational resources instead of clinical terms.
