MeL Minute - Topic Finder tool

Hello all, I think I've previously mentioned the Topic Finder tool available in many Gale databases<http://mel.org/Databases> found at MeL.org<http://www.mel.org/>. It is a way to visualize words and subjects found in the text of search results and can be displayed as a wheel or tiles. Clicking on a wheel or topic displays documents that contain the specific topic or word being searched for. While this sounds pretty straightforward, the beauty of Topic Finder is how it provides links to topics you might not even realize are related to your original search and gives information you didn't even know to ask for. Here's an example. Dwarf planet Pluto has been in the news lately so I thought I'd do a quick search using Topic Finder and in addition to the obvious results for NASA and Space Probes, I got results for Eris, Dr. Showalter, and the International Astronomical Union. Eris? Never heard of it but now I know it's the "...new permanent name for the solar body formerly known as Xena," and as for Dr. Showalter from the SETI Institute<http://www.seti.org/>, he and a colleague calculated the orbits of four smaller moons around Pluto. Both of these are directly related to the Pluto adventure and Topic Finder showed me the connection. (These results were obtained doing a search in the New York Times<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=SP00>. Experimenting with other Gale databases yielded similar but different articles.) Keep exploring and learning! Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. Program Application

Hi Everyone, At our library we are regularly approached by groups and individuals wanted to do programs for our library. We really appreciate that so many people think of us, but we do feel an obligation to our community to make sure we are providing quality programs on topics that address our users' needs and interests. We would like to develop some sort of application for those wanting to present programs so that we can get a better view of what they are proposing and have answers to questions about intended audience, affiliation and level of expertise of the presenter, and references if available. We think this might go a long way to helping us keep track and fairly evaluate the potential programs that come our way. Does anyone else have something similar that they use? If you would be willing to share along with any information about how this works for you, I would greatly appreciate it. Lapeer District Library closure--temporary!!

Hi all-- There are major issues with our network here and so we have a shutdown planned for August 7-9. We are hoping that it does not go longer, but one never knows what one will find when things are opened up. Great Crime Author!

Tobin Buhk is an excellent program for libraries, and is reasonably priced! We enjoyed his presentations so much we have had him back twice! He has several programs to choose from. Tobin T. Buhk is a freelance author specializing in true crime. To research his first book, *Cause of Death* (Prometheus Books, 2007), he volunteered in a county morgue, watching as his co-author, Kent County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen D. Cohle, unraveled puzzling forensic mysteries. A second collaboration with Dr. Cohle resulted in *Skeletons in the Closet *(Prometheus, 2008).
