How high is your confidence level in interpreting research data? As librarians interact with more research through efforts with evidence-based practice and systematic reviews, they have a growing need for understanding statistics. This confidence-building course will help you be more comfortable with statistical concept for reading research findings and interpreting data. Goals and objectives: After participating in this webinar, you will be able to: * Understand basic statistical terms such as standard deviation, t test, p value, and so on * Identify test measures used in published research studies * Interpret the data, formulas, and graphs used in the research findings Agenda: 1. Examine sample research papers and their data analysis findings. Highlight statistical terms that will be discussed. 2. Define the statistical concepts. 3. Use interactive exercises to verify understanding. For example, to examine different research studies and decide which test measure was used. 4. Reexamine the research papers and data to further reinforce the concept. Presenter: Jin Wu is an emerging technologies librarian at the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library. In this role, she tracks, investigates, and uses data proactively to address emerging trends that improve library services and promote library resources. Wu has extensive experience using various tools to gather and apply user information to make data-driven strategy and planning decisions. She has taught MLA continuing education courses on statistics and data analysis a few times in the past years. The classes were well attended and scored very well on evaluations. Wu is active in professional organizations and has given multiple presentations at national and local conferences. Ideas for an election program

We are thinking about doing something as information only (non-confrontational or political) for our patrons prior to this November's election. Has anyone done something like this? We are a small rural community (5,000 pop.) so no League of Women Voters or any groups like that to help. Any ideas or advice is appreciated! Cindi L. Join us for the Alpena Book Festival!

The 2016 Alpena Book Festival will take place Saturday, September 24^th from 10:00 am-7:00 pm in downtown Alpena. A full day event, the Festival includes panel discussions, author talks, meet and greets, and educational sessions for aspiring writers. Over 25 authors have committed their participation in this year’s Festival, spanning genres that include: inspirational writing, poetry, young adult, science fiction, literary fiction, mystery, Michigan based fiction and non-fiction, and graphic novelists. In what is a truly cooperative endeavor, the staff and volunteers from the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library, Blue Phoenix Books, Bob’s Bullpen, and Olivet Book and Gift are bringing together authors, illustrators, poets, and readers of all ages to the shores of Thunder Bay for a celebration of literacy and Michigan literary contributions. The festival has activities for all age groups, Ambassador Member of the Alpena Girl Scouts, Bailey Becker, is facilitating a children’s reading and writing activity for ages 3 and up and Children’s Librarian, Mary Clute, will be hosting a craft program at the library. While the event is free and open to the public, attendees may purchase a festival tote bag for a nominal fee, the proceeds of which benefit the READ adult literacy program at the Library. Each bag has a selection of Advanced Reader’s Copies provided by various publishers as well as a few convenience items, peppermints, pens, and bookmarks. Downtown Alpena businesses including Art in the Loft, As You Wish Bakery, Cabin Creek Coffee, Thunder Bay Winery and The Fresh Palate have generously donated their space to provide unique and fun settings for Festival activities. A detailed schedule of the day’s events will be available in the coming weeks. Cataloging for new Harry Potter "book"

Seeking advice from the collective... We just received the new Harry Potter "book." I put it in quotes because it is a script, not a story in the more traditional sense. My inclination is to put it in the ADULT FICTION collection, although since it is a script, it could also go into non-fiction (822). There are only a couple of other libraries in MeL who have it, and they're split about 50/50. I appreciate any thoughts / suggestions. Thanks in advance. The Northville District Library seeks an enthusiastic, innovative Librarian to join our customer service directed team, as detailed below: Position: Reference/ Teen Services Librarian – Part Time 20 Hours per week Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends. Duties: Provide reference, instructional, and reader’s advisory services for patrons of all ages. Responsible for development and maintenance of Teen collections, both print and non-print. Develop and carry out programs for middle and high school youth. Oversee annual Battle of the Books for middle school students, working with schools and other staff. Contribute to Library’s online presence. Related duties as assigned. Reports to the Head of Adult Services. Requirements: MLS from an ALA accredited college or university. Must have strong public service orientation and be able to work effectively with teens. Able to assist library users with the Internet and electronic databases. Able to speak and write effectively and use standard computer software for written reports. Previous library experience and strong knowledge of YA literature preferred. Salary: Salary range: $21.44 to $ 25.00 per hour. Paid time-off benefits include prorated vacation, sick leave, personal business days and holidays. This is a Union position.
