Strategic Planning Resources
by White, Shannon (MDE) 04 May '17

04 May '17

We have had several questions lately about strategic planning. As libraries move towards putting a plan together or just want to investigate how they may do this in the future we wanted to make sure the community was aware of the online resources or upcoming events that are available to help. These are not going to create a plan for your library but directors and staff can review and discuss ideas to help prepare for how you want to approach planning in your library. Aspen Institute's Action Guide for Re-Envisioning Your Public Library - http://www.libraryvision.org/ The guide leads you through a variety of strategic activities and provides worksheets that evaluate the current level of support for your library and the resources needed to plan and convene your own community dialogue. WebJunction also provides an archived webinar to help you get started with the resources from the Aspen Institute - http://learn.webjunction.org/course/search.php?search=Aspen+Institute Harwood Institute's Turning Outward Resources for Libraries - http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/libraries-transforming-communities… You can't create a plan unless you understand your community. The Harwood tools can help your library gain a better understanding your community, not just your patrons, an help strengthen your community to create positive change. WebJunction provides a variety of recorded sessions covering everything from facility planning, surveys to community engagement. Also available are self-paced courses you can complete on your own and receive a certificate. View upcoming and archived sessions here: www.webjunction.org<http://www.webjunction.org> Public Library Management: Identifying Community Needs- https://www.edx.org/course/public-library-management-identifying-michiganx-… Learn how to conduct research, surveys, and interviews as well as how to analyze data to better assess the local needs and wants of a public library community. This is a self-paced MOOC with certificate options from the University of Michigan. Hybrid Librarian from the Michigan Library Association. MLA's Hybrid Librarian event is scheduled for May 19 in Lansing. This day-long in-person opportunity offers strategic thinking exercises and an introduction to Design Thinking for Libraries. http://www.milibraries.org/events/-hybrid-librarian/ Strategic Planning in Libraries: Focusing on Execution not Just Planning webinar on Wednesday, May 17, 2017; 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST. Keep your eye out for a special 2-day in person program offered by MCLS, Michigan Library Cooperative Directors Association, Library of Michigan, Michigan Academic Library Association (MiALA), and Michigan Library Association (MLA) this September 6 & 7! For more information, check out http://mcls.org/training-events/events/michigan-library-safety-programs/ Maintaining a Safe and Respectful Library: A Customized Plan - Online Course Library staff face the challenge of providing good customer service, even in the face of difficult interactions. However, feeling - and being - safe at work takes much more than just customer service training. A truly safe workplace is a welcoming workplace that reflects "kindness, mercy, tact, compassion, a desire to understand-and a generosity of spirit" for both customers and staff.1 In this four-week course, participants will complete a Workplace Audit and Action Plan that will help them explore how their library can develop a safe and respectful service environment for visitors and staff. From policies and procedures to job descriptions, performance expectations, behavior and discipline rules and safety guidelines, we can build and maintain workplaces that make everyone feel welcome. During this course participants will examine current conditions in their own libraries - including everything from signage and bathrooms to parking lots, policies, and job descriptions with the goal to honestly assess them and develop practical plans for improvement. Beyond the Welcome Sign: Tailoring Immigrant Services for Success - WebJunction Upcoming Webinar
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 04 May '17

04 May '17

Interested in inclusion and providing the best services for your immigrant populations? Check out this free webinar from WebJunction! TUESDAY, MAY 11, 2017 Beyond the Welcome Sign: Tailoring Immigrant Services for Success 3:00 PM-4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time There is much more to supporting immigrants and refugees than hanging out a "welcome" sign at your library. Successful programs and services are specifically tailored to meet the needs of the range of populations who may come through your doors. Hear from Movers & Shakers who work with communities to empower vulnerable and often underserved populations with a sense of belonging and self-reliance. Learn innovative approaches to identifying and celebrating immigrant leaders; how to foster networking between native-born and newcomer populations and between immigrant groups of varying national origins; how to highlight immigrant-positive narratives; and more. You'll be sure to find practical ideas among the multi-pronged strategies that these librarians have used to ensure that new immigrants really do feel welcomed by the library and the community. Presented by: Will Chan, City and County of Denver, (recent Program Administrator, New Americans Project, Denver Public Library), and 2016 Mover & Shaker and Sophie Maier, Immigrant Services Librarian, Louisville Free Public Library, and 2017 Mover & Shaker. MeL Minute: Changes to the Discovery Service
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 04 May '17

04 May '17

Now it's easier than ever to search just the parts of MeL that you are interested in from the MeL homepage. We've added two tabs to the search box. By default you continue to search all resources but now you can also choose to search either just MeLCat or just Articles and eResources by simply clicking on the labeled tab. The MeLCat tab searches the shared catalog. Articles and eResources is a little more complicated. The good news is that it's also easier than it used to be. Articles and eResources includes many MeL databases, curated websites, articles from popular and academic journals as well as magazines and digital repositories. After usability testing, we determined that it was not helpful to have a large collection of scholarly works that were not actually drawn from our own purchased content. Since we've removed it, the search results are much more likely to be relevant to the Michigan residents who rely on MeL for information. We also opted to remove the Advanced Search option from the homepage. It performed very poorly in testing among non-library staff and in fact proved to be more of a hindrance than a help to successful searching. Advanced Search is still available to you from the search results screen, just look for the discreet link under the search box on the top of the results page. We hope these changes will make the homepage search box more attractive and useful and for you. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org>, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or Sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>.
