Our morning keynote speaker will be Paul Gallagher, Assistant Dean of Transformative Services at Wayne State University. Paul will be sharing his experience and insights on user services. He will be presenting, "Creating Amazing Experiences: How to Transform Your Service Philosophy, Better Listen to your Patrons, and Use Design Thinking to Delight Your Patrons." We are also pleased to welcome Debbi Schaubman, Shared Library Systems Manager at Midwest Consortium for Library Services, as our afternoon keynote speaker. Debbi will be sharing an overview of the partnership between Library of Michigan, MCLS, and Zepheira Technologies. She will be presenting "MeLCat, Linked Data and Web Search: An Overview and Update." One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue, and eye donation. Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life. This statewide campaign, which includes public, academic, special and hospital libraries of all sizes has inspired nearly 3,500 people to sign up as donors! “Libraries have been great partners in saving and healing lives,” said Dorrie Dils, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They’ve been enthusiastically educating the public on the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation for the past seven years. Thanks to this strong partnership, Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,500 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan, only 59% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to join the donor registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need. “Someone you know probably needs - or will someday need - a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. building committees

Hi all-- We have purchased land and are going to build a new facility--dependent on a successful bond vote, of course. Anticipated cost ($12.5M) is established and square footage (35,000 sf and a basement!!) as well. Our building committee is in place, discussing space needs, where program space should be located, etc. I know that every library system works differently, but I'd like to talk to a couple of librarians to get a feel for what the building committee's authority and charge are, how board and community members fit into the process, and when the committee's job is done. The books I'm reading just aren't helping with these questions. I'd love to set up some time to talk to people who have completed a major building project or who are in the middle of one. MeL Minute: Updates to Encore and a new round of usability testing

You may have caught the MeL Minute last October about the results of the MeL usability study of Encore Duet, the search box on the MeL homepage. We took the results of that study very seriously and implemented many of the changes that were revealed as desired enhancements. The vendor with whom we work has also had a number of product improvements. We'd like to thank the staff and patrons of the Jackson District Library who have agreed to participate in a follow-up study to determine whether these changes improve the success rate of the MeLCat request process. We'll also be working with non-patrons-mid-Michigan residents who do not currently have a library card-to see if MeLCat is intuitive for them. That study will take place this summer with results to be announced in the fall. Stay tuned! Have you noticed the recent changes to MeLCat and the Articles & eResources search? Here they are: * Records with more holdings attached to them are weighted more heavily. This means that records that have more lending libraries attached to them will appear higher in the search results, hopefully making them more attractive to click on and improving the findability of available copies. * This also has the benefit of decreasing the visibility of electronic resources with only one holding. * Known title searching has improved. * There is now better matching on one word titles * If no copies associated with a given record are available for loan that is now noted on the results page with a red message: "No copies currently available" * A number of the facets have been collapsed and can opened or closed with a plus/minus sign * A background color (green instead of gray) was added to the Facets section * The Request an Available Copy screen has been improved. 1. Only Available or Status unknown (Follett systems) items are shown 2. The request button is larger and at both the top and bottom of the screen and 3.
