Dear Library Friends, As we begin the new year and you take stock of your many accomplishments from last year, please don't forget to apply for FOML's *Outstanding Michigan Friends of the Library Merit Award*. Did your Friends of the Library group carry out an outstanding project or a number of successful activities in your community during 2017 that had a significant impact on your library’s services to the community? Tell us about it! It could be for a specific project you carried out in 2017 or based on the full scope of the group’s activities during 2017. The award will be given to two different Michigan Friends groups: one award will go to a library that serves a population of under 12,000 people and one to a library that serves a population of 12,000 or more. Applications will be judged by the FOML Grants Committee on the following criteria: 1. *Planning:* Involvement of the Friends, library, and community in the use of resources, an innovative and appropriate activity, and measurable outcomes (e.g., attendance at event, increase in patron use of the library, etc.). 2. *Implementation:* Public relations, broad membership involvement, and use of resources. 3. *Evaluation:* Assessment of activity or program with measurable results. 4. *Innovation:* New idea(s) for program or activity, creative involvement of community and specific citizens, and creative use of public relations. 5. *Community Involvement*: Evidence of community involvement in planning and implementation. The winning Friends group will receive $400 and a plaque, along with an invitation for 2 of your members to attend the FOML Annual Membership Meeting/Workshop in 2018 to receive the award. Must be knowledgeable about and able to make decisions in situations dealing with Library security, emergency procedures and conflict resolution. * Able to provide technical assistance to patrons and fellow staff on various platforms and devices. * Able to troubleshoot and/or formulate viable work-arounds to ensure patron satisfaction. Minimum Qualifications: * Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association. * Professional certification as a Librarian from the Library of Michigan. * Application of the basic principles, concepts and methodology of professional librarianship in carrying out basic assignments, operations or procedures. * Critical thinking skills, as applied to successfully answering reference inquiries. * Knowledge of literature, current events, and general information found helpful in resolving reference inquiries. * Effective oral and written communication skills. * Professional attitude towards providing public library services to patrons. * High competency with current technology, i.e., computer literacy, knowledge of the Internet and applicable knowledge of various platforms including mobile and tablet devices. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and supervisors. * Excellent understanding of Library policies, procedures, philosophy and Public Service Values. * Team player with willingness to work together to solve problems while providing premiere patron services. * Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. We had a little helper in the office yesterday (Joe Hamlin's daughter Grace) and she agrees that the book choice of "I Got the Rhythm" by Connie Schofield-Morrison, illustrated by Frank Morrison, for our new Ready to Read Michigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18668_83061---,00.ht…> is pretty great! She even wrote up her own storytime actions for toddlers to go with the story. Personal Time Compensation

Hello, My Board is looking to review and possibly change our employee personal time policy concerning banking time from year to year and financial compensation. Please share information if you are allowed to carry personal time over from year to year; if there's a limit to how many days you can bank, and how you are financially compensated. My Board is considering allowing unlimited banking of days with financial compensation being paid out upon retirement (or leaving the position). If you receive a check upon retirement (or leaving the job) how is the amount calculated? Thanks!
