HASTINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY 227 E State St Hastings, MI 49058 TITLE: Library Director SUPERVISOR: Hastings Public Library Board of Trustees SALARY RANGE: Minimum $50,000, negotiable dependent on experience, plus excellent City of Hastings benefits package. POSITION SUMMARY: The Library Director, under the direction of the Library Board, directs and manages the operations of the library, including hiring and management of personnel; initiates development and implementation of the budget, long range plans and policies; implements board policy; oversees educational, cultural, and informational services and programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Prepares annual budget for the Board approval, monitors and approves expenditures as directed by the Board, monitors administration of gifts, state and federal money. * Supervises personnel directly or through subordinates; hires and trains employees; assigns and monitors work; evaluates personnel; disciplines employees as necessary. * Coordinates selection of materials for collection. * Works with Library Board of Trustees in establishing library policies and interpreting policies to the staff. * Promotes and demonstrates excellent service to the public. * Addresses community groups and prepare correspondence and reports on library operations. Make library resources and services known to the community through various public relations vehicles. * Provides fund raising support to the Library Board of Trustees including direct solicitation, mailings and reporting. * Responsible for overseeing grant writing and seeking external financial support. * Evaluates services, programs and materials as they meet the community's needs. Do periodic needs assessment and recommend enhancements. * Supervises the physical plant of the library. * Attends City of Hastings departmental and Council meetings. Attends Hastings Charter and Rutland Charter township meetings, as requested. Attends Lakeland Library Cooperative Advisory Council meetings, ILS Council meetings and any related committees. Attends Libraries of Barry County meetings. * Maintains all library statistics, records and correspondence and report to appropriate governing bodies, as required. * Answers questions and respond to complaints. * Maintains knowledge and skills through professional contacts, professional development activities, and necessary certifications. * Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES * Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of professional library administration. * Thorough knowledge of current trends and developments in the library field, including, but not limited to, access, reference, technical services and collection development. * Considerable knowledge of assessing community needs and interest levels. * Considerable knowledge of fund raising. * Considerable knowledge of the elements making up a library collection. * Ability to use computers and other office equipment. * Ability to plan and direct library services. * Ability to speak and write effectively. * Ability to develop library work and training programs and to supervise the work of others in diversified library activities. * Ability to work effectively with community leaders, public officials, and the general public. * Ability to work effectively with numbers to complete duties related to budgeting and maintaining financial records. * Ability to see and hear well. * Physical ability to lift at least 20 pounds. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS * Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. * Four years' experience with increasing responsibility in professional library work. * Must have Library of Michigan Certification Level 2 status and attend Library of Michigan New Directors' Workshop and Advanced Directors' Workshop or provide proof of previous attendance. * Ability to see and hear well. * Physical ability to lift at least 20 pounds. Greetings! The call for proposals for the 2018 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Library Conference is open through Monday, October 16. Submit your session proposal online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RLC2018. The theme of the 2018 conference is Open Doors, Open Minds, celebrating diversity and inclusion in libraries. The conference will be held April 30-May 2, 2018 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan. The conference is a specially crafted to reach the informational needs of small and rural library staff throughout Michigan. The three-day event features exhibitors, awards, keynote speakers and an array of sessions geared to libraries serving small and rural communities. The Library Director, under guidance of the Regional Board of Trustees, develops and maintains the library service program meeting the needs of its constituents in the Daniel Boone Regional Library System. Through ensuring delivery of quality programs and services, the Director works closely with the Board and staff recommending and developing policies; developing and implementing the Strategic Plan; actively engaging in public relations and media opportunities; understanding regional community needs; actively participating in DBRL communities; serving as liaison to the Friends of the Library groups and Foundation Board; understanding and developing the annual operating budget; seeking collaborative partnership opportunities; staying abreast of industry trends; and creating and sustaining a positive work environment. Qualifications. Minimum requirements include a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and six years of professional library experience with at least three years of director or other senior level administrator experience; or equivalent background and experience that will enable the candidate to perform effectively the work required. Essential skills include (1) knowledge of library principles, practices and trends through active professional development; (2) commitment to staying well-informed on legal, financial and other relevant issues dealing with Missouri public library law and general operations; (3) ability to analyze data and information for decision making, recommendations and preparing reports; (4) excellent verbal and written communication skills serving as the Library's spokesperson; (4) an understanding of personnel management to lead an engaged and thriving staff; (5) initiative, awareness and vision in developing library services; and (6) skill in building and maintaining effective relationships with the Library Boards, staff, elected and appointed officials and community leaders. Hi, Here is what I received from my inquiry about library interns and their pay and benefits: Clinton Macomb - $12 per hour for 10 - 12 hours per week - no benefits Troy - It's $12 per hour for 20 hours per week for up to 2 years Southfield - $11 - 12 per hour for 30 or 40 hours per week with (prorated) health insurance, sick and vacation days and paid holidays, some tuition reimbursement and a $1200 completion bonus for finishing the 2 year contract Canton - $13 per hour with possible merit raises up to $14.10 per hour - no benefits and pay rate increase is possible next year.
