#FundLibraries Update: Ask Your Rep to Support LSTA and IAL
by Steven Bowers 06 Mar '18

06 Mar '18

Please note: I checked and MI legislatures have not yet signed on for 2019 so they need to hear from us! -Steve Please take a minute to sign and send: http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/write-a-letter?8&engagementId=445994 ________________________________ From: ALA Washington Office <DistrictDispatch(a)alawash.org> Sent: Tuesday, March 6, 2018 11:33 AM To: Steven Bowers Subject: #FundLibraries Update: Ask Your Rep to Support LSTA and IAL [Take Action For Libraries] Advocacy Alert: #FundLibraries Update Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=445994&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> Send a Tweet<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=447493&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> What Happened This year's "Dear Appropriator" letters have started to circulate in the House, asking Representatives to preserve at least $210 million in federal library funding. One letter asks members of the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and the second does the same for the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. Why It Matters The battle for domestic spending is becoming more intense, and Congress is looking for programs to cut. The more members of Congress who sign these letters, the better the chance that the Appropriators will preserve the funding for the LSTA and IAL programs. And as you know from our previous emails, these programs represent the bulk of the federal funding that is provided for libraries. Under the rules of LSTA, states are required to match one third of their federal contribution. Any cut to LSTA in the FY 2019 budget will likely lead to a cut in library funding at the state level. Additionally, IAL is the only dedicated federal funding provided for school libraries. What You Can Do Now Many Representatives will only sign on to a "Dear Appropriator" letter if their constituents ask them! Use the <http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxdnyxUIzUeVpjXpTJC…> ALA Action Center<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/write-a-letter?8&engagementId=445994> to send your representative an email and ask them to contact Rep. Raul Grijalva's office to sign on to the LSTA letter and Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) to sign on to the IAL letter. Time is short - the deadline for the letters is March 19th, so don't delay! Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=445994&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> Send a Tweet<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=447493&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> Not sure if your Rep. has signed yet? Board Game Responses
by Tanya Procknow 06 Mar '18

06 Mar '18

For those of you interested here are the results for the question on cataloging board games. I received 9 responses. 3 of the libraries have games for in house use or programs. I will give you a summary of the other responses. 1. Games signed out on a sheet of paper. They find duplicate games at rummage sales etc. to resupply missing pieces. 2. When cataloging they keep an inventory piece list on the inside of the box and put the pieces in zip top bags with the contents listed. They count pieces and either charge patron if it is an important part or 3-D print a replacement. 3. Check out and use the honor system on pieces. 4. Cataloged with a list of how many pieces and an description inside the box top. Charge a fee for lost pieces. 5. Check out but do not count pieces. 6. Cataloged with a detailed list in the general note that lists all items included. Our library will be purchasing a board game collection. I am using them to try and promote family time during our summer reading program. I will be cataloging them for circulation. We have decided to itemize each piece on a list inside the cover. We will deal with piece loss as they happen and based on importance and replacement costs. You can email me if you want any more specific information from the responses. Tanya R.
