Question About Audio in Community Rooms
by faith＠colomapubliclibrary.net 05 Mar '18

05 Mar '18

Hello Everyone- Our library is looking at updating our A/V equipment in our Community Room- basically just installing a flat screen TV and trying to figure out how to get the best sound. I am not extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of sound. Our community room does have an analog speaker system installed where there is an amplifier and then you could hook into that to make the sound disperse through round speakers that are in the ceiling of the room. (These round speakers are throughout the library they are standard in lots of places. we use them for our PA System). My question is does it make sense to convert the optical sound from our new tv to analog and run the wire through the ceiling to the amplifier (this is a fair amount of work.) or will we get the same or better sound from a sound bar? Do any of you have experience with using sound bars in your community rooms? Our room is roughly 25 feet x 45 feet. Thanks in advance for any help or opinions you offer. :) Faith Wolbers Assistant Director Coloma Public Library 151 W. Center Street P.O. Applications by March 25 preferred. *Full-time Adult Services Librarian * *Cromaine Is the Cultural Center of Hartland…and our community appreciates that* A beautiful new addition has been completed, under budget, and we finally have spaces for our staff to continue to create new and innovate traditional library services and collections. As the Cultural Center of Hartland, Hartland’s Cromaine is expected by its community to offer music and art, as well as all of the science, engineering and technology engagement possible for all ages. *We have a full-time Adult Services Librarian position *available with collection and programming responsibilities for adults. You may not do a story time, but you’ll probably assist with desk coverage in Youth, Teen, and at Circulation as well as some other programming (a summer reading circus, anyone?) If you have some special interests and skills, we’ll find a way for you to share those with our community, too! If that’s your desire, interest, and future vision, too, then we need you! * Cromaine District Library is located near the intersection of M-59 and US-23—easy to get to from Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Flint. Hartland’s Cromaine (built in 1927, expanded in 1980, and again in 2017) has the elegant Community Room, a large physical collection and large digital collection, plus two new smaller meeting rooms, a Youth Program Room, and three new study rooms as a result of the little addition to this building. *We also have a serious commitment to outreach, participating in many events and exhibits beyond our walls* as well as finding new ways to be active outside this building in a busy community. Cromaine wins grants, including several National Endowment for the Arts’ The Big Read. Grants for technology in Youth, local business sponsorships for the summer concert series, exhibits from the Smithsonian and to be a pilot for a national grant program—we are a place to connect to culture, music, technology, makers, as well as reading in every format. *Many of the grants support a very full event calendar* (check it out at WWW.CROMAINE.ORG) We are an OverDrive (TLN’s Download Destination) plus Advantage, hoopla, and RB Digital (Zinio) library. We also offer Kanopy and Universal Class services supporting our lifelong learners. Re: [Michlib-l] Mileage vs Drive time
by Reed, Nyama 05 Mar '18

05 Mar '18

We pay travel time and mileage, with no minimum travelled first. My understanding is that mileage is for use of a personal vehicle, whereas drive time is them being paid to drive where you want them to work that day and it is above and beyond their usual commute. If it takes me two hours to drive to a meeting in the capitol, then I get paid that time plus the mileage for using my own car. Have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y. Fwd: Dogs in Front of Library
by Stanczak, Cindy 05 Mar '18

05 Mar '18

It's a common issue here in the summer. Someone on a walk ties their dog to the light post in front of the library while they run in real quick for a book or a movie. It's also sadly common that someone will not be brief in their visit and the dog becomes a concern for several reasons. - What if the dog bites someone? - What if someone hurts the dog? - What about our patrons with dog fear that won't/can't walk past a dog to come into the library? - What about the welfare of the dog being tied in front of the building - heat/cold, shelter, lack of shade, etc. Does anyone have a formal policy on this you'd be willing to share to the group? YA group?
by Dennis Hillers 05 Mar '18

05 Mar '18

Hello to everyone- I find myself in a new position in another part time gig where part of my duties are as YA selector and librarian for the first time. I could use some directions... I'm used to a much older adult population. Is there a YA SIG or mentoring/mentor program available? Also, are there interest groups for Cataloging and Collection Development here in MI? I'm already in the ALA IG's for both of these as well as New Members. Thanks!
