Write Michigan Short Story Contest Reviewers Needed

Hello all! If you've ever wanted to be part of an exciting endeavor, here's your chance to review entries for the 2017 Write Michigan Short Story Contest (a statewide short story contest sponsored by Kent District Library and Schuler Books & Music). Reviewers are the first round volunteer judges that narrow down the entries for the Finals Judges and Public Online Voting in January. * Who: Those who love to read, who love to promote the written word, who love to see good things happen to people and who love new ideas. * What: Write Michigan Short Story Contest is taking entries for all ages from people who live in Michigan and awarding cash prizes to winners. * Where: Submissions will be available for review online. Volunteers will be given a login on December 4, 2017. * When: Reading/reviewing will take place from December 4, 2017 to December 28, 2017. Contest ends November 30. *We will also have need for reviewers to review last minute stories if other reviewers did not complete reviews. These will only be 2-3 stories from December 29, 2017 - January 1, 2018. We will contact established reviewers in mid-November to get those willing and able to do last minute reviews on the Last Minute List. * How: Volunteers are asked to read entries in one of four categories (adult-18+; teen-12-17; youth-under 12; Spanish - all ages). * Each volunteer will have 10-13 stories total. * Each story will be read by two volunteers. * Story authors will not be disclosed but we ask that if volunteers have entered the contest or have family members who did, they please review a different contest category. * Please find our judging criteria here: http://writemichigan.org/reviewers_faq.pdf. However, the initial score that volunteers will be providing will be on a simple scale of one to ten, with ten being excellent. * Why: We want to support talented Michigan writers. Details: 1. United for Libraries and PLA to host Oct. 17 webinar on ‘Troubled Library Boards’

United for Libraries and the Public Library Association (PLA) are partnering to present a webinar designed to improve library boards of directors. The webinar, titled “Troubled Library Boards: Prevention and Survival” will be held at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Dysfunctional boards of directors are an increasingly common problem in libraries. Serving on a troubled board is stressful, and it can take the focus away from a board’s primary mission. What essential practices can prevent or minimize board problems? When a board does become dysfunctional, how can those involved survive and create change? The webinar will be led by former United for Libraries Executive Director Sally Gardner Reed, Illinois Trustee Jo Beckwith, and Algonquin (Ill.) Public Library Director Stephen Bero. Participants may submit questions (anonymously, if preferred) ahead of the webinar so that personal cases can be addressed during the question and answer period. Webinar participants will learn: * Best practices to prevent or minimize board problems. * What can be done to get a wayward Trustee back on the right track. * How to move forward as a high functioning team. She will start Oct. 9. She currently serves as chief operating officer for the Florida Hospice & Palliative Care Association. She had been the association's director of development (2010), as well as its director of strategic initiatives (2011). If you want to understand or know MORE about the Detroit 1967 Rebellion, then join us at the *Salem-South Lyon District Library* Wednesday, October 11, 7pm for: *Detroit in Crisis: The History of the 1967 Rebellion* *Wednesday, 10/11/2017 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM* *This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit Rebellion, a five-day uprising that began with the raid of the United Community League for Civic Action on 12th near Clairmount. This program will examine the root causes of what is still considered to be one of the most significant episodes of civil unrest in US history. Presenting will be Jamon Jordan of The Black Scroll Network History & Tours.* Jamon Jordan is an educator and historian. He conducts lecture tours dealing with ancient African history, African cultures and traditions, as well as African American history, including the period of slavery, Black nationalism, the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power movement, and other topics dealing with the history of Africans in America and throughout the world.
