Detroiter, Aaron Robertson with Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly (WSU Professor of African American Studies) Sunday, April 13 - 2-3:30pm Detroit Public Library, Main Library 5201 Woodward Ave. Galleria, Detroit, MI 48202 The Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2024) is a lyrical meditation on how Black Americans have envisioned utopia―and sought to transform their lives. Author Aaron Robertson makes his way from his ancestral hometown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit―the city where he was born, and where one of the country’s most remarkable Black utopian experiments got its start: The Shrine of the Black Madonna. The Author Series Committee is pleased to welcome Aaron back home to Detroit for a special conversation about The Black Utopians. He will be joined by Wayne State University Associate Professor of African American Studies Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly. Copies of The Black Utopians will be available for purchase from Detroit's own Source Booksellers! About Aaron: Aaron Robertson is a writer, translator from Italian, and editor. His debut book, The Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America, was selected as a New York Times Notable Book of 2024, a Washington Post Best Nonfiction Book of 2024, one of TIME’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2024, and one of the New York Public Library’s 10 Best Books of 2024. It was also recognized as a best book of the year by The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The New Republic, ELLE, Essence, Literary Hub, and the Chicago Public Library. His translation of Igiaba Scego’s Beyond Babylon was shortlisted for the 2020 PEN Translation Prize and the National Translation Award, among others, and in 2021, he received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in translation. Aaron previously served on the board of the American Literary Translators Association and is currently an advisory editor for The Paris Review. His work has appeared in various outlets, including The New York Times, The Nation, Foreign Policy, and more. About Dr. Burden-Stelly: Charisse Burden-Stelly is a critical Black Studies scholar of political theory, political economy, intellectual history, and political and historical sociology. Her research pursues three complementary lines of inquiry. The first interrogates the transnational entanglements of U.S. capitalist racism, anticommunism, and antiblack racial oppression. The second excavates twentieth-century Black anticapitalist intellectual thought, theory, and praxis. Her third area of focus examines theories and discourses of economic development in the African diaspora. She is the author of Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States and the co-author, with Dr. Gerald Horne, of W.E.B. Du Bois: A Life in American History. I am also the co-editor, with Dr. Jodi Dean, of Organize, Fight, Win: Black Communist Women’s Political Writings and of Reproducing Domination: On the Caribbean and the Postcolonial State with Dr. Aaron Kamugisha and Dr. Percy Hintzen. Additionally, she guest edited the “Claudia Jones: Foremother of World Revolution” special issue of The Journal of Intersectionality. Her published work appears in journals including Small Axe, Monthly Review, Souls, Du Bois Review, Socialism & Democracy, International Journal of Africana Studies, CLR James Journal, and American Communist History. My words are featured in popular venues including Monthly Review, Boston Review, Essence magazine, Teen Vogue, Jacobin, The Nation, and Black Agenda Report. She has been interviewed on podcasts, radio shows, and news shows including The Real News Network, Breakthrough News, Black Myths, Millennials Are Killing Capitalism, The Red Nation, AJ+, Bad Faith, The Katie Halper Show, Revolutionary Left Radio, Guerilla History, Upstream and the New Books Network. Chat with Good Dress Author: Brittany Rogers Saturday, April 12 - 2-3pm Detroit Public Library, Parkman Branch 1766 Oakman Blvd, Detroit, MI 48238 Join us as Michigan Notable Books award recipient Brittany Rogers will sit down to read excerpts from and dialogue about her book, Good Dress. About the Book: In her debut poetry collection, Brittany Rogers explores the audacity of Black Detroit, Black womanhood, class, luxury and materialism, and matrilineage. A nontraditional coming-of-age, Good Dress witnesses a speaker coming into her own autonomy and selfhood as a young adult, reflecting on formative experiences. With care and incandescent energy, the poems engage with memory, time, interiority, and community. The collection also nudges tenderly toward what it means to belong to a person, to a city. Can intimacy and romance be found outside the heteronormative confines of partnership? And in what ways can the pursuit of pleasure be an anchor that returns us to ourselves? About the Author: Brittany Rogers is a poet, visual artist, essayist, high school teacher, and lifelong Detroiter. Audacity is the overarching concept that activates her creative process; as a Black queer femme, Brittany is fascinated by the boldness and risk taking that daily survival necessitates. As such, her explorations of audacity often lead to an interrogation of the connections between the audacity of Black women and pleasure, longing, autonomy, the erotic, adornment, coming of age, and matrilineage. As a whole, Brittany’s creative work pokes at the notions of respectability, ownership, beauty, and obligation, and is constantly looking to subvert the heteronormative and patriarchal expectations that are placed upon Black femmes. Supervisory experience preferred. *Nature of Work: *Van Buren District Library is seeking an enthusiastic and engaged leader for its Antwerp Sunshine Branch, which is located in Mattawan, MI, on the edges of both suburban Kalamazoo and Van Buren County, a rural area with many farms, parks, and places to camp. Mattawan is a growing community with many new housing developments, an excellent school system, and a vibrant village. Van Buren District Library serves 44,230 residents from its seven branch locations. The Antwerp Sunshine Branch is the busiest and fastest paced in the Library District. The Antwerp Branch Manager is a position of responsibility, requiring a person willing to perform a wide variety of duties. The Antwerp Branch Manager must have an understanding of suburban and rural community library service and be effective in developing good public relationships. The Antwerp Branch Manager serves on a full-time basis, which includes some evening and Saturday hours. These hours should reflect the best interests of the Antwerp community and the Library District. The Antwerp Branch Manager is responsible to the Executive Director. It should be recognized that many, if not all staff members serve in multiple, often unrelated roles. This is standard practice at VBDL. Responsibilities: - Supervision of the Antwerp Branch of the Van Buren District Library. - Train, schedule, and supervise branch staff with a focus on excellent customer service. - Maintain a welcoming environment and branch library facility function and appearance in collaboration with local government and library administration; report building and grounds problems to local government staff and library administration. - Provide patrons with technology help and meet their information needs. - Ability to troubleshoot library equipment problems (ex. replenish copier supplies, etc.) - Develop children’s and adult events and classes in keeping with library district best practices in conjunction with the Assistant Director, PR & Technology Instruction Librarian, and other Branch Managers - Serve as Branch liaison for local officials, local schools, and other community organizations. - Attend Library District and local organization meetings requiring personal transportation. - Under the Collection Development team’s guidance, actively manage the Branch’s physical collection using current data to weed, rotate, and replace materials. - Oversight of the Branch’s circulation activities, including ILL and MeLCat - Other tasks as required by the Library Director. *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:* - Desire to meet and serve the public in a welcoming and professional manner. - Knowledge of managerial policies and practices related to the management of the Branch. - Excellent organization and planning skills with the ability to work independently and as a team leader. - Intermediate level computer skills including Microsoft Office and Internet utilities. - Ability to work some evening and weekend hours - Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, supervisors, local officials, and the public. - Ability to read fine print with or without corrective lenses, to lift up to 30 pounds, bend, twist, crouch, kneel and refile library materials up to 90 inches in height.
