Please forward to anyone that you believe would benefit from this information. ************************************************** Call for Posters - MiALA Annual Conference 2018 Sustainability in Academic Libraries MiALA invites you and your colleagues to submit poster proposals for the 3rd annual conference to be held May 17-18, 2018 in East Lansing. Please consider sharing your innovations, creative endeavors, and practical solutions for sustainability in academic librarianship. How do we sustain ourselves within the profession? How do we sustain our libraries and institutions? How do we work (or what is our obligation) environmentally and socially? How do we sustain our communities? We welcome posters in any topic related to work in academic libraries, and particularly if they have a connection to the conference theme. Broad participation is encouraged from librarians, staff, LIS students, and administrators from all types of academic libraries (including but not limited to public universities, private colleges, and community colleges). Poster proposals should include a description of no more than 300 words. They will be evaluated on relevance to the academic library profession, originality and creativity, and clarity/applicability of content and outcomes. You must be an individual or student member of MiALA to submit a proposal. Regardless of the decision on a proposal, MiALA encourages you to attend the conference. Poster session proposals may also be submitted if your presentation proposal is not accepted. Hi all,First of all thank you to the multitude that replied to my question about the legal ins and outs of conducting a wine tasting in a public library. I was going to compile all of the responses and send them out, but the response I received from the always helpful Clare Membiela (see below) summarized the responses the best: when it comes to the laws governing such things every situation is different and there is no one, single answer. The absolute best thing to do is contact the Michigan Liquor Control Commision at 866-813-0011 option #1 and discuss your program idea or plan with them. Talking to your attorney wouldn't hurt either. I believe the answer to this specifically for a tasting may lie in who you have administering the tasting (see MCL 436.2027, below). If you have an outside entity overseeing the tasting, then you may wish to consult with them on this question. The Michigan Statutes MCL 436.2027 details some requirements for retailers and distributors that are holding/conducting tastings. Tastings appear to be handled slightly differently than general alcohol consumption, again, depending on the specifics of the event. I located the attached letter from the MLCC that may help answer some of your questions. Alcohol consumption, in general, is possible in an unlicensed venue (think of a wedding reception, for example, or a private party), but there arespecific limits and much depends on the specifics of each situation (including Tastings). General alcohol consumption (as discussed in the attached letter from the MLCC) would seem to be legal in unlicensed venues under cerain circumstances, and subject to certain limitations (especially an expectation of payment or donations of any kind in exchange for participation in the event where the consumption takes place) A general discussion of alcohol consumption and the need for a license can be found here: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/dleg/Club_Licensee_Info_272130_7.pdf (pp1-2) (discussing consumption or service by clubs – but see pg 1-2 for a good explanation of , generally, when a license is required). See also MCL 436.1915 - you may also want to consult with your municipality in the event there are any restrictions vis a vis alcohol in public buildings. I would STRONGLY SUGGEST that you contact theMLCC inquiry numbertoll-free, at 866-813-0011, in order to obtain the correct answer for your particular event.
