Hi all, I have a few historical books I'd like to have rebound so that they can remain in our collection. Do you have a bindery that you like? Will they take single items? How much does it usually cost you? Thanks, Kelly Bennett Head of Circulation, Ferndale Area District Library 269-932-3179

Security of unstaffed areas
by jshirtz＠uproc.lib.mi.us 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

Hello! I am looking for libraries that have a level or area that is primarily unstaffed and out of sight of staff members in other areas. Do you have added security measures in those areas (security cameras, a doorbell, etc.) to compensate for the lack of a staff member? If there is an outside entrance to that area do you keep that door locked some, or all, of the time to prevent people from entering? Is it only open when staffed? How has the way you've secured the area affected its use by the public and how has the public reacted? Please contact me off list at jshirtz(a)uproc.lib.mi.us with any input you'd like to share. I very much appreciate it! I'll be happy to compile any responses I receive and share them here. Thank you! Jessica Shirtz Library Director Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library 317 N. The library serves 215,000+ residents from a central library (an architectural icon) and five branches anchoring neighborhoods by providing convenient access to library programs. Key opportunities include developing a new strategic vision, restoring hours of operation, and working closely with the City of Des Moines and with the Library Foundation to seek new streams of revenue. The library can be a key participant with the city as it looks to the future with its Forward Plan and the Capital Crossroads Plan. Des Moines is also home to good public services and friendly, cohesive neighborhoods. The Director of the Des Moines Public Library reports to a five-member Library Board of Trustees and partners with city officials as a city department head to achieve the library's mission, goals and objectives within the context of community needs and priorities. Overall responsibilities include: fostering effective internal and external communications with the community, city officials, the Library Board, the Library Foundation, and library staff; proposing recommendations and implementing board policies and operating procedures reflecting the reality of the current economic environment; developing the library staff as a strong team through leadership, mentoring and providing staff development opportunities; providing sound fiscal management while seeking additional revenue sources; working with the Library Foundation; and exploring and developing collaborative relationships with a variety of local, regional and statewide organizations and agencies. Experience in a multi-branch library; a minimum of five years of executive level experience as director of a library or deputy, assistant, or associate director of a comparable or larger system; experience reporting to a governing board; and experience in a union environment are all highly desirable. Essential attributes include energy and enthusiasm; personal integrity; and excellent interpersonal skills; thorough knowledge of financial management; collaboration and consensus-building skills; sensitivity, flexibility, and creativity; and a solid understanding of philosophy, trends and "best practices" in the library and information technology fields. The Library Director must live in the City of Des Moines. Compensation. A starting salary range of $125,000-155,000 (with placement negotiable, dependent upon experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

Greetings Michigan Library Community, In an effort to demonstrate the importance of IMLS funding to MeL and the enormous impact it has on the lives of every day citizens, we commissioned a series of short videos. Beginning in January, we started featuring one a month on the MeL homepage. All the videos live on our YouTube channel in a playlist called Celebrating MeL<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_AfOuTBGCvvGP7NyeeE8>. We'd like to encourage you to share these videos on your own social media channels. We find that the shorter videos (those lasting about 30 seconds) have the highest rate of viewer completion and we have six of those. They're perfect snippets for embedding on Facebook, Twitter, or your other favorite social networking platform. Just go to the video, click on "Share" beside the thumbs up and thumbs down icons, and this functionality will be available to you. It gives your patrons a feel-good way to support the library by Liking your posts and also provides them with some information they may not know about services they use regularly. Our longer videos also have strong viewer completion rates and they give us time to tell a story from multiple angles. Don't miss them! * MeLCat Patrons<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8r3ND6xhn8&index=11&list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_Af…> (2:35 minutes) - A very nice collage of MeLCat patrons from all over the state talking about their positive experiences with the service. * MeLCat Staff<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED7GDeIafrY&index=10&list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_Af…> (3:15 minutes) - A behind-the-scenes look at MeLCat with a short tutorial for the new MeLCat user and an explanation of what it can do for them. * MeL Databases for Adults<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkOWB6PbOME&index=6&list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_AfO…> (3:50 minutes) - An introduction to a variety of MeL's great subscription resources for adults. * MeL K-12 Databases<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZmXHMWlA-o&index=4&list=PLsiX4lmeyL4Cm_AfO…> (3:08 minutes) - Sings the praises of using MeL databases in the classroom and beyond for Michigan's K-12 learners who need research help. ALA News for March 20, 2018
by Steven Bowers 22 Mar '18

22 Mar '18

ALA News for March 20, 2018 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARIAN ASSOCIATION ALA Hails Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act as Possible 'Turning Point' The following statement was issued by American Library Association (ALA) President Jim Neal upon the introduction of the Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act (S. 2559) by the bipartisan leadership of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations Committees, Chairmen Grassley and Corker and Ranking Members Feinstein and Menendez, along with Senators Harris, Hatch and Leahy. The Marrakesh Treaty Implementation Act amends the U.S. Copyright Act to ensure compliance with the Marrakesh Treaty. Adopted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2013, the Marrakesh Treaty requires countries to enact copyright exceptions that allow the creation and distribution of accessible format copies such as braille, audiobooks or digital files. Neal stated, “The Marrakesh Treaty was a monumental accomplishment five years ago, and libraries were central to its architecture. The Treaty’s ratification by the U.S. Senate and adoption of the Treaty Implementation Act will be a turning point in global information access: it will allow U.S. libraries to create and share accessible format copies of books and other materials across borders to persons with print disabilities – something that 36 other countries are already able to do." http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2018/03/ala-hails-marrakesh-treaty-i… ALA names Hayden honorary member Carla D. Hayden was elected to honorary membership in the American Library Association (ALA) in action taken by the ALA Council on Sunday, February 11, during the Midwinter Meeting in Denver. Hayden was nominated in recognition of her passionate dedication to equity of access and her historic appointment as the first woman and first African American to the post of Librarian of Congress. Prior to this historic appointment, Hayden served as director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore for 23 years. There she transformed the deteriorating library system into a vital community service agency. She ensured that the city’s libraries offered a broad array of services to assist residents from all walks of life, providing them with access to the internet and digital collections. http://www.ala.org/news/member-news/2018/03/ala-names-honorary-member Intellectual freedom breakfast at ALA Annual Conference welcomes New Orleans journalist The ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) will host an Awards Recognition and Fundraising Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. Topics will include: * An Overview of the history of its development * An introduction to RDF and linked data concepts * An overview of BIBFRAME and how it implements various standards and models (RDF, vocabularies) * Examples of BIBFRAME records and current projects * Tools currently available to work with current MARC records to BIBFRAME conversion Child's Play: Cataloging Children's Materials<https://store.mcls.org/index.php/child-s-play-cataloging-children-s-materia…> Wednesday, April 4, 10am - 12pm Eastern (9 - 11am Central) In this course, we will: 1) Explore the possibilities of value-added cataloging, 2) be able to identify and deal with the anomalies found in cataloging children's materials, and 3) know how to use cataloging tools and resources available for this special focus. We'll start the course with some thinking about why we even want to catalog children's materials. We will discuss some of the irregularities that occur with cataloging children's books (board books, books with moving parts, books with no words, etc.), kits (for example books with accompanying stuff -- CDs, plush toys), and "realia" (puzzles, toys, games). We will talk about several ways to add value to the catalog record -- ways to tie in with curriculum, reading levels, reading programs, library programming and displays, and just generally providing some depth to the data available to the catalog user.
