2018 Summer Pen Pal Program
by Lancaster, Catherine (MDE) 20 Mar '18

FYI - Please excuse any cross-posting. Sent from my iPad Begin forwarded message: From: "Shea, Shana" <shea(a)townofwindsorct.com<mailto:shea@townofwindsorct.com>> Date: March 19, 2018 at 11:33:51 AM EDT To: "'alsc-l(a)lists.ala.org<mailto:alsc-l@lists.ala.org>'" <alsc-l(a)lists.ala.org<mailto:alsc-l@lists.ala.org>> Subject: [alsc-l] 2018 Summer Pen Pal Program Reply-To: "Shea, Shana" <shea(a)townofwindsorct.com<mailto:shea@townofwindsorct.com>> For the 2017 Summer Reading program I coordinated a pen pal program among Children’s/Youth Services Departments across the United States. We had approximately 50 libraries sign up. We are doing it again this summer so I’m sending out this google form and the below description to see if other libraries are interested in participating this summer. Google Form https://goo.gl/forms/zZMYkWXhjxuf2RB23 Children are encouraged to participate every time they visit by drawing pictures and writing general letters about what it’s like to be a kid where they live. We’re not looking to do one-on-one exchanges between children, because there’s no guarantee of continued participation and we don’t want any kids getting heartbroken because of someone else’s inability to regularly participate. In the case of my library I have a bulletin board space where I hang the letters and pictures we receive and place a mailbox for our patrons to place the letters/cards/pictures they want to send. I periodically gather those items and send them off to other participating libraries. We also kept track of where we got letters from on a map with flag pins. This year I’ve proposed the option to libraries about whether they wish to mail freely or have an assigned partner library. Please fill out the google form if you’re interested in participating, and please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Thank you! Memorial for Michael Teague Orblych
by Barbara Kriigel 20 Mar '18

20 Mar '18

Dear friends and colleagues of Teague Orblych, On Friday, April 6, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., a memorial will be held to celebrate the life of Michael (Teague) Orblych, Research Education Coordinator and Social Sciences Librarian at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Mardigian Library. The memorial will be held in the Berkowitz Gallery, 3rd floor Mardigian Library. Are you interested in sharing a memory or short story about Teague at the memorial? If so, contact either Nadine Anderson (nfanders(a)umich.edu) or Jamie Wraight (jwraight(a)umich.edu) If you cannot attend or don’t wish to speak, a memory book is being compiled for the family. Please send your favorite thoughts, stories, or memories to Nadine or Jamie. Teague received his Bachelor in General Studies at the University of Michigan in 1991 and his Master of Library and Information Science in 1999 from Wayne State University. He worked as an Assistant Librarian at the University of Detroit Mercy from 2000 to 2001. Teague joined the Mardigian library in 2001 as an Assistant Librarian and worked his way to Librarian in 2014. During his 17 years at the Mardigian Library, Teague impacted many students with his passion and dedication. As our Social Sciences Librarian, he was passionate about teaching and supporting students. As our Research Education Coordinator, he provided valuable leadership, expertise, and experience. He was known in the library and across campus as a respected collaborator in teaching and research, as well as a valuable member of our community. Teague’s passion for information literacy along with his publications, presentations, and leadership enriched the field of academic librarianship. Most of all, we will remember him as a great person who made us laugh. We are establishing an endowed scholarship in Teague’s memory for UM-Dearborn students. To contribute, contact Eva Gogola by email at egronows(a)umich.edu or by phone at 313-593-5495 <(313)%20593-5495>. Please share this with anyone you feel may wish to attend the memorial, share a memory, or contribute to the scholarship. Regards, The Mardigian Library Staff
