Reminder: MLA 2018 Proposals due Saturday!
by Rachel Ash 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

MLA 2018 Annual Conference program and poster proposals are due this Sat. March 31. MLA 2018 Annual Conference October 17 - 19, 2018 Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi The MLA 2018 work group seeks a variety of program and poster proposals that will address topics representing the wide-range of professional responsibilities found in libraries. Library professionals interested in sharing their insights, experiences and knowledge are invited to submit a program or poster proposal for consideration. Presenting a breakout program is your opportunity to showcase best-practices, introduce creative new ideas and solutions to challenges facing Michigan libraries, or share your stories of successful collaborations or programs. We encourage participation from librarians, staff and administrators from all types of libraries! Are you working on a new project, but don't have results ready to present a formal program? Consider presenting a poster session, where you can discuss important topics with peers in an informal setting. A good poster session focuses on one main theme, presents useful information, and stimulates discussion. It's a great way to jump into presenting without building a full-blown program. Ready to submit your proposal? The submission form can be used for both program and poster proposals: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MLA2018Novi Visit MLA on the web for complete details<http://www.milibraries.org/prof-development-networking/annual-conference/ca…> or download the Call for Programs and Posters (pdf).<http://www.milibraries.org/assets/1/6/Call_for_Programs_and_Posters_AC_2018…> Questions? title submissions for 2018 Libraries Read: 1 Book
by Jan Davidson 28 Mar '18

28 Mar '18

Thanks to all who have already begun submitting titles this year's Libraries Read: 1 Book! Keep those submissions coming! Libraries Read: 1 Book is an annual project of MCLS, a "library community read" focused on professional development. Library staff from all types of libraries are encouraged to participate by voting on which book should be selected, then participate in the discussion, whether online or in-person. We will join together, across state lines and library types, to read and discuss the same book. Submit titles for 2018 Libraries Read: 1 Book! Last year's process of inviting YOU, our community, to submit titles for consideration was such a success, we'd like to do it again! We hope that by opening the submission process to a wide group of library professionals, we'll discover the perfect book to read together! How this works: * Go to the Google title submission form<https://goo.gl/forms/DyQuSWQv3AULUpwn2> and submit one or two titles for consideration. Submissions will be accepted until Monday, April 16, 2018. * MCLS staff will consider all submissions and narrow the list to four titles. We will then ask for votes on our Facebook page in early May. We'll tally the votes and announce the selected title near the beginning of June. * Once the title has been selected, start reading! MCLS will announce the Twitter chat and other discussions to take place in August 2018. We look forward to getting your title submissions over the next couple of weeks! Please share with your local school librarians. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Deb Kachel <dkachel69(a)comcast.net> Date: Mon, Mar 26, 2018 at 9:06 PM Subject: Newly Published School Library Research Hello School Library Advocates Keith Curry Lance and I have conducted some recent research and hope you will help us spread this info out on your state networks and social media. Our research is gaining attention and has been published by School Library Journal and Phi Delta Kappan. Here are the links. In addition, please read the Jessen article that shows how students in our poorest communities and largely black communities have the fewest school libraries and librarians. Jessen poses this as a “canary in the coal mine” harkening of a resegregation of schools, led by the charter movement that has the least library services for students due to no oversight. I hope you find these articles helpful in your work to ensure that all K-12 students can learn with adequate school library services. Invitation to the Fourth Annual "Putting the Puzzle Together: Pinckney Area Genealogy Seminar" on April 21st at the Pinckney Library
by Hope Siasoco 27 Mar '18

27 Mar '18

Dear Library Colleagues, Please feel free to share with your staff, board, Friends and community members: *Announcing the Fourth Annual Genealogy Seminar at Pinckney Library April 21* Family tree dabblers and serious genealogy students alike need to mark their calendars now for the fourth annual “Putting the Puzzle Together” genealogy seminar on Saturday, April 21, at the Pinckney Library. The organizers are thrilled to welcome nationally-known genealogy speaker Kelli Bergheimer. She is a member of both the Genealogical Speakers Guild and the Association of Professional Genealogists. This is Ms. Bergheimer’s first appearance in the area, and we anticipate a great day of learning and networking with this enthusiastic and experienced teacher. Select topics for this year’s event include “Genealogical DNA Testing for Beginners,” to help you sort out the pie charts and percentages in a DNA report, and what it may mean for your family tree research; “Preparing for a Library/Archive Visit BEFORE You Go,” allows attendees to benefit from lessons learned during years of research in libraries and archives of all kinds. The presentation “Things I Wish I Would Have Known When I Started,” offers tips for beginners and helpful tricks for more seasoned researchers. Finally, “How to Clear the Mess on Your Desk,” reinforces the importance of organization and provides approaches for taming the post-its, scribbled notes, and backs of envelopes into methodically ordered means for your research, maximizing your time and resources. Participants in earlier editions of this seminar have commented on how much truly useful information is imparted in this fast-moving, well-organized event. Pre-registration is now open at the discounted price of $25.00, or $30.00 on the day of the seminar. Lunch is available for an additional $7.00; light refreshments are included. For more information visit the website http://pcplgenealogy.weebly.com, email pcplgenealogy(a)pinckneylibrary.org, or call the Library at 734-878-3888 <(734)%20878-3888>.
