We'd love to have you join us! -- Jennifer Dean The University of Detroit Mercy Press, McNichols Campus Library, Department of English, African American Studies Program, and Broadside Lotus Press cordially invite you to celebrate the publication of the new poetry collection Medicine: New and Selected Poems by Aneb Kgositsile Wednesday, April 11, 2018 Reception at 6:30 PM Reading at 7:00 PM McNichols Campus Library | Second Floor, Bargman Room University of Detroit Mercy 4001 W. McNichols Rd, Detroit, MI 48221 This event is free and open to the public. An RSVP is appreciated. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Rosemary Weatherston, Director UDM Press, at 313.993.1083 or weatherr(a)udmercy.edu. Aneb Kgositsile (Gloria House, Ph.D.) is Professor Emerita in Humanities and African American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and Associate Professor Emerita in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department of Wayne State University. Aneb is the former Director of the African American Studies Program at the University of Michigan Dearborn. She has been an activist in human rights struggles in the U.S. and abroad since the 1960’s, when she was an organizer in the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). She is the co-founder of the Justice for Cuba Coalition and the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality. Over several decades, she contributed to the development of three African-centered schools in Detroit: Aisha/Dubois, Nsoroma Institute and Timbuktu Academy. From 1992 to 1996, she was a Visiting Professor in the English Department, and Director of the Partnership with Township High Schools at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is currently engaged in the freedom school movement in Detroit. Aneb has published three previous poetry collections, Blood River (Broadside Press, 1983), Rainrituals (Broadside Press, 1989), Shrines (Third World Press, 2004), and a book of commentary on the political uses of environment in the United States, Tower and Dungeon: A Study of Place and Power in American Culture; and served as lead editor of the anthology, A Different Image: The Legacy of Broadside Press. Her most recent publications include an essay, “The Detroit ’67 Rebellion: The Long Aftermath,” 2017 Catalogue of the Detroit Public Library; a chapter in Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts of Women in SNCC; and a book, Home Sweet Sanctuary: Idlewild Families Celebrate a Century, a cultural study of the African American resort community in Northern Michigan. >From the foreword to Medicine: New and Selected Poems, written by Dr. Michael Simanga: Aneb Kgositsile is one of our best poets. She is a healer who has organized a cupboard full of secrets gathered from gardens, recipes sewn into quilts, and methodology passed on in whispers. She has written them down in her new collection of poems, Medicine. This book, her fourth collection of poetry, could only come from a poet who is so planted in the black soil and the red clay that the images she spills out over the page cause us to stop, not pause, but stop, close our eyes and let the memory drift up and into our senses where we can taste and smell and feel. Surrender to her spell is strange and wonderful because the individual memory is summoned, but seems incidental. The appeal is for wide, deep connection to spirit, collective consciousness, and remembrances from so far back the names of the original tellers are difficult to recall. Medicine is a book to be carried in a pocket close to the heart. It is collective stories smuggled from person to person, family to family, community to community, south to north, north to west, across rivers and oceans. Ready to Read Michigan March Newsletter
by Lancaster, Catherine (MDE) 29 Mar '18

29 Mar '18

[every child ready to read] Ready to Read Michigan - March 2018 In This Issue: * RTRM Survey Reminder * Planning more outreach? Get an extra kit! * Website of the Month: NYPL Sings! * Important News from MiAEYC on Week of the Young Child * Play! Is your library offering play for gross as well as small motor skills? This Month's Wisdom... "There is an easy way to improve your child's chances at school. It will entertain and delight him. It will strengthen the bonds between him and you. And it is virtually free. Sound too good to be true? Actually, it isn't. The magical method: taking time to read aloud to your child." ~ ReadAloud.org/why.html<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> RTRM Survey Reminder [Connie and Frank Morrison]Author Connie Schofield-Morrison and illustrator Frank Morrison (pictured left, photo credit to Kalamazoo Public Library) had a fantastic time touring in Michigan - although they did think it was awfully cold compared to their home state of Georgia! They interacted with nearly 2,000 young children in Michigan while touring with their book I Got the Rhythm. It has also been thrilling to see all the posts from public libraries on social media and to read about upcoming Ready to Read programs in your libraries. Thank you for embracing this new early literacy program. That said, the Library of Michigan, and our supporters the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Consumers Energy Foundation, need your feedback! Please take about 10 minutes to complete the 2018 RTRM survey<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> and be sure to include any stories or quotes from outreach or from patrons on the Ready to Read Michigan program. Your responses are important in how the Library of Michigan shapes and funds this program in the future. ________________________________ Planning more outreach? Get an extra kit! [RTRM Logo]The Library of Michigan is pleased to inform you that we have some extra kits featuring 1 copy of the book available from our "Ready to Read Michigan" (RTRM) program. RTRM is an early literacy outreach program designed for public libraries focusing on ages 0-5 and the 5 practices of Every Child Ready to Read, a Public Library Association initiative. If you would like to continue doing outreach as a public library, or if you are not a public library but are interested in requesting a kit, please complete the RTRM Kit Request <http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> form for your organization. Please be mindful that this is not the Michigan Reads program, which did end in 2017, and kits do not get mailed to schools, Great Start or Head Start programs automatically anymore. Any extra kits will be mailed in the order the request was received, while supplies last. For more information on this public library program and to access the programming guide you can go to www.mi.gov/readytoread. ________________________________ Website of the Month: NYPL Sings! [NYPL Sings]The New York Public Library has released a new album for young children, caregivers and librarians to help expand early literacy practices. Movement, vocabulary, play and more are all a part of this inclusive album. Download of the full album is available for free from NYPL Sings! <http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> as .MP3 or .WAV files, and lyrics are also downloadable. A couple of sing-along videos are also available. ________________________________ Important News from MiAEYC on Week of the Young Child [NAEYC]Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (Michigan AEYC), an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), has undergone significant restructuring and branding changes under the direction of NAEYC. To align more closely with NAEYC, Michigan AEYC decided to discontinue the celebration of April as Month of the Young Child(r) and, beginning in April 2018, will celebrate Week of the Young Child(tm), April 16-22, 2018. The Week of the Young Child(tm) is an annual celebration hosted by NAEYC celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, and families. Information about Week of the Young Child(tm) can be found here<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…>. View Governor Snyder's Week of the Young Child(tm) Proclamation here<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…>. Effective immediately, please discontinue using the phrases Month of the Young Child(r) and MOYC(r), and the MOYC(r) logo and graphics, including the purple ribbon graphic and wearing of purple ribbons as purple is not an approved branding color of NAEYC. Although Michigan AEYC is no longer officially celebrating April as Month of the Young Child(r), they urge individuals and programs to continue their celebrations of young children year-round, not only during the Week of the Young Child(tm), April 16-22, 2018. For ideas to celebrate Week of the Young Child(tm) in Michigan, visit the MiAEYC website<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…>. Source: Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children e-newsletter dated March 22, 2018. ________________________________ Play! Is your library offering play for gross as well as small motor skills? [kids with wheelbarrel]In the Fall 2017 issue of Children and Libraries Judy T. Nelson writes "Librarians add small motor activities such as bending, stretching, playing with a parachute, or tossing small balls into their storytimes with great regularity. And while libraries are no longer the quiet places they once were, most libraries still do not have a basketball hoop or slide in their children's area to encourage the development of gross motor skills, yet this category is as important as its smaller cousin. Especially in today's screen-filled sedentary world, children need to develop both small and gross motor skills; plus play is a primary way children learn about their world, its boundaries, and how things function." You can read more of from her article, Play, The Library, and Every Child Ready to Read 2<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> on the Association for Library Service to Children's website, but this got me thinking... just what are Michigan libraries doing to encourage gross motor skill play in an appropriate way? Do you offer large foam blocks for building or maybe have a playground on library grounds? Maybe your storytimes offer structured physical play time? Please feel free to share in an email to me, Cathy Lancaster, any strides your library is doing to encourage gross motor skills in young children at lancasterc5(a)michigan.gov<mailto:lancasterc5@michigan.gov>. This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Invitation to participate in upcoming National Week of Conversation!
by White, Shannon (MDE) 29 Mar '18

29 Mar '18

Hello everyone, I want to invite your library to participate in the National Week of Conversation <https://nationalweekofconversation.org/> (NWOC) April 20-28, 2018. NWOC is one week in which people all over America participate in conversations that prioritize understanding the other across political, social-economic, and cultural divides. NWOC has a number of great partners<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/partners/> with different events<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/events/> planned (and more to come!), including our premiere library partners: Boston Public Library and Kansas City Public Library. As a library, there are a number of different ways you and your patrons can participate in NWOC: 1. Host an event, or make your library available for conversations: Here are some easy ways to make this happen: * Book Clubs: Provide space for your local book clubs to discuss a book that brings up important issues. Check out this list<https://kclibrary.bibliocommons.com/list/share/703461058_kaites_kcmo/114400…> of suggestions from the Kansas City Public Library. * Living Room Conversations<https://livingroomconversations.org/> offers self-facilitated conversation guides. Simply provide meeting space and conversation guides to groups of patrons who can meet at your library for conversations. * Facilitated Conversations: Send an email to courtney(a)ncdd.org<mailto:courtney@ncdd.org> to learn about bringing a facilitator to your library. 1. Provide computers for your patrons to connect with others across the country: Mismatch<https://www.mismatch.org/> is a service that utilizes free video conferencing systems to connect people across the country for conversations across divides. Simply provide space in your library for people to use computers and participate. Point your patrons to Mismatch.org<https://www.mismatch.org/> where they can sign up for a conversation. 2. Add your event to the NWOC calendar<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/events/community/add> to promote your event and receive recognition for your work on the events calendar. <https://nationalweekofconversation.org/events> 3. Promote NWOC <https://nationalweekofconversation.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/NWOC-Part…> to other libraries and to your community. Check out our partner kit for sample emails and social media messaging. 4. And more! These are just a few ideas. We invite you to be creative and register your own event. Perhaps you want to use your own conversation guide or invite an expert speaker to your library? Please register<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/events/community/add> your event and direct any questions to jaymee(a)allsides.com<mailto:jaymee@allsides.com>. Are you ready to get started? Please sign up<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/become-a-partner/> as a partner and check out our partner packet<https://nationalweekofconversation.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/NWOC-Part…> for more information. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to jaymee(a)allsides.com<mailto:jaymee@allsides.com>, or send me an email. This is a great opportunity for libraries to utilize the skills and models you have been learning about through LTC: Models for Change<http://ala.org/ltc-models> - I hope you will consider hosting a conversation and joining the many others happening across the country this April! Best, Courtney Courtney Breese Managing Director, National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation courtney(a)ncdd.org<mailto:courtney@ncdd.org> www.ncdd.org<http://www.ncdd.org> @ncdd @courtneybreese Join us this November 2-4 in Denver for NCDD2018!<http://www.ncdd.org/ncdd2018> What are NCDD conferences like?
