Yoga in the Library
by Sharon Crotser-Toy 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

Greetings, everyone! For many years we've held yoga classes in our facility, taught by our very experienced but not-certified instructor. This is something she announces at each class. Regardless of her certification, it has recently come to my attention that we should probably have people sign some sort of a waiver regarding their participation. Does anyone have something of that nature you are currently using that you'd be willing to share? Many thanks for your time and for this community! -Sharon -- Sharon Crotser-Toy Director *Watervliet District Library* 333 N. Weddings at your library?
by Andrea Ingmire 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

Anyone out there host weddings at their library? Our policy "allows" is, but after a rather horrible experience where we had to cancel on a couple...I am having serious second thoughts whether this is ever a reasonable use of our facility. I'm always very happy to allow couples to use our library for photos, but the ceremony itself has me disenchanted. It's hard enough when you have to cancel a meeting room reservation because of something happening at your facility. To cancel a wedding is tragedy to those involved. Religion in the library
by Don Priest 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

Hi, hoping to get some feedback on a patron complaint. He took issue with a Nativity that gets put up in front of the library every year, and it's got me wondering if we're implicitly supporting one religion over another. The library isn't actually responsible for the Nativity, but it's easy to see why people would think we are. We also put up a Christmas tree every year, and though it has no religious iconography, I'm wondering if we should avoid it in the future. My research has led me to believe we're not out of line, but religion can be a touchy issue. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has fielded similar complaints, or has a deeper understanding of the issue. I'm asking around here about the Nativity, just to make sure I have all the facts. He also took issue with a Pride Month display we have up, as evil according to his religion. I'm not planning on taking that down, but if anyone has answered a similar challenge I would appreciate hearing how it went. Don Priest Southgate Veterans Memorial Library 14680 Dix-Toledo Rd. MCLS announces new soft skills workshops
by Jan Davidson 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

MCLS announces new soft skills workshops In conversations with multi-types of libraries in both Indiana and Michigan, participants stated that "soft skills" were the most needed skills for staff in the 21st century library. In response, MCLS has created a new Certificate of Library Staff Development in Basic Soft Skills. The certificate program includes five live, online courses delivered by MCLS trainers on topics such as accountability, workplace etiquette, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and productive work habits. These introductory-level workshops are all one-hour in length, and can be taken as stand-alone courses, or you can complete all five to earn a certificate. And the best part? All of the online soft skills courses are free to MCLS member libraries! The non-member rate for these courses is $119 each. The MCLS Basic Soft Skills Certification Program provides you or your staff with an opportunity to: * Develop and demonstrate basic competence in in-demand skills for the workplace of the 21st century library * Become a more well-rounded employee by improving skills that complement library technical skills * Improve chances for career success To earn the Basic Soft Skills Certificate, staff must complete five MCLS workshops or special programs from the Soft Skills category (see list below). Workshops or special programs must be taken within a three-year period. After successfully completing the requirements for the certificate, fill out the MCLS Certificate of Library Development in Soft Skills Application Form<https://www.mcls.org/files/7015/2769/3302/MCLS_Cert_Application_-_Soft_Skil…> and send it to the training department via email, mail, or fax.
