Youth Services Programming During A Time of Crisis Thursday, September 6, 2018 2:00 PM EST Youth Services Programming During a Time of Crisis<https://w3.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM2017_Youth_Services_P…>, is a *downloadable toolkit* designed to help public libraries in times of crisis plan programming that creates a sense of normalcy for youth and teens in times of disaster or upheaval. This toolkit is the Capstone Project designed and written by Jamie Gilmore, Grace Morris, Erica Trotter, and Alexandria Wardrip through the University of Washington's Information School. It was also featured (8/30/17) in The Conversation's article, "Public Libraries can (literally) Serve as a Shelter from the Storm<https://theconversation.com/public-libraries-can-literally-serve-as-a-shelt…>," by Grace Morris. Grace will be joining LM's Youth Services Coordinator, Cathy Lancaster, to give library staff and administrators a deeper look at why the toolkit was created and how you can use it in your library. This will be an interactive webinar, so come prepared to roll up your sleeves and contribute your thoughts and ideas! This webinar will be recorded and link shared with registrants if you cannot attend in person. Registration will open in August. *Please note that a printed copy of the toolkit was mailed to all public library directors in Michigan in a packet of "Resources for Public Libraries," sent by the Library of Michigan 2 weeks ago. Please check with your director for the toolkit if you would like it in print. Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. The Library of Michigan will receive resources, training, and support through NASA@ My Library, a STEM education initiative that will increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for library patrons through the nation, including geographic areas and populations currently underserved in STEM education. State Librarian Randy Riley said that collaborating with NASA and its partners creates a unique opportunity for public libraries across Michigan to access essential STEM resources, activities, and hands-on training. The resources and training will be available for local libraries across Michigan to access beginning in July. "The end goal of NASA@ My Library is to get STEM training to communities that may not have access to many STEM resources, and that public libraries make for an engaging site for the project," Riley said. "The Library of Michigan will be circulating activity kits directly to libraries to steer programming for all ages and will be offering training this fall to public library staff." The project is led by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI), in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, the Pacific Science Center, Cornerstones of Science and the Education Development Center. Additional support for this project comes from NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Michigan Libraries for Life Invitation
by White, Shannon (MDE) 11 Jun '18

Join Michigan Libraries for Life 2018! (October 9th - October 15th) Registration form: http://bit.ly/ML4L2018 [smalllogo-01(1) (1).png] If you could save a life, would you? Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation. One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue, and eye donation. Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation, and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry<http://bit.ly/ML4Life>. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life<http://www.librariesforlife.org/>. This statewide campaign, which includes public, academic, special and hospital libraries of all sizes has inspired over 3,900 people to sign up as donors! “Libraries have been great partners in saving and healing lives,” said Dorrie Dils, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They’ve been very successful at educating the public about the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation. Thanks to this partnership, Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,200 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan, only 63% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the donor registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need. “Someone you know probably needs - or will someday need - a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. Your library can be a great help by registering donors and providing information about organ donation,” said Anne Rau, Capital Area District Library librarian and living kidney donor. “By participating in Michigan Libraries for Life your library is helping to save lives.” [https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/3qhXa7tbwpA_dtw3ntHNlDcEbdMDMzsIvc-3THZNs…] Kalamazoo Valley Community College Library 2017 We are excited to bring this life-saving event back again in 2018! Libraries are welcome to participate by staffing a registration table in their libraries for however long they are able, from just a few hours to all 7 days. This year’s drive will start on Tuesday, October 9th and run through Monday, October 15th. Gift of Life Michigan<http://giftoflifemichigan.org/> will provide free in-person trainings for library representatives (dates and locations TBD). We have also developed web-based training materials for those who are unable to attend the in-person sessions. "Thank you to all of those who support the Michigan Libraries for Life campaign." commented one 2017 Michigan Libraries for Life participant. "We as libraries could not offer a campaign without all of the resources you provide to us." The key to this program's success is the participation of many libraries across the state. Your library is warmly invited to join the 2018 Michigan Libraries for Life organ donor registration drive. If your organization would like to participate in this year’s program, please complete this registration form: http://bit.ly/ML4L2018. Fwd: AWE Learning Information & Summer Reading Guides
by Angelina Michelini 11 Jun '18

11 Jun '18

Here's a discount opportunity for AWE machines. The flyer below says the offer ends June 15 but they have extended it to June 30. If you're interested in a quote or discussing the options, please contact Sam Priestley direct. His contact information is below. Thank you, Angie Michelini Technology Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court, Novi, MI 48375 Cell: 734.673.7303, urgent requests only Helpdesk: 248.536.3100 x134 Office: 248.536.3100 x144 Direct: 248.716.5583 From: "priestleys" <PriestleyS(a)awelearning.com> Subject: AWE Learning Information & Summer Reading Guides Things to Note!! 1. One million dollars is still quite a bit of money even today. It can buy a lot of things. Including hundreds of AWE Learning, Inc. workstations! Just recently one single library system, the name to be announced after they get a chance to make the first announcement to their patrons, purchased over one million dollars of our literacy workstations. Since few libraries have that kind of budget you can only imagine the behind the scenes work to find the grants and cash to make that happen. However, the real story is all about why? Why did they choose AWE Learning, Inc. products? Simply, we teach kids to read, read better, and understand more of what they read using the latest in fundamental literacy training. In fact it is not the 70+ educational programs on the devices, though they are great, but the AWE educational programming that coordinates everything in the background that is the “secret” sauce to making them the 2018 Modern Library Platinum Award winning best in class literacy device. Chosen by hundreds of libraries and systems including one willing to spend over $1,000,000 for their kids! 2. ALA is coming up soon (very soon)! Drop by the booth (#941)!! At least it will be air conditioned as upper 90s temperatures and 90% plus humidity can be a little draining! This will be my 54 th ALA (counting summer and winter – I am not that old yet) and on my first trip to New Orleans I decided to walk the mile from the hotel to the conference. I could have just dived into the river for the same result. But do drop by, spin the contest wheel, and say hello! 3. The Summer Learning Program and Guide is really popular (see below). Call or email me if you need quotes. The Summer Reading Implementation Guide will be the first of the upcoming guides to all of workstation subject areas. They will help you to really bring your AWE workstations into your reading programs – this summer and all seasons ahead. If you have not received your copy please let me know. 4. Product updates. I often hear people say, “Your program titles seem to be the same. Is there anything new?” Yes, there is! Remember that the front screens of many titles are their branding screens. It is what they use to keep being instantly recognizable. Sesame Street, as an example, is instantly recognizable just by looking at their opening screen. Does that mean nothing actually changes in the program? No! Almost every program we include regularly updates their program in many ways great and small. You do have to connect the units to your Wi-Fi and in the administrative panel click on “Click here to start updates”. Please note that this email is using an external list that we are not allowed to match or update into our systems so if you are on the Do Not Email list please be assured this will be the only version to use this list. Also, on that note, AWE Learning does not mail most marketing material. If you are removed from our email list you will miss most of our product update and company information. On that note: If you would like to be removed from receiving emails please reply, Remove Me, to this email. You may already be on our internal list but I will match it for the request. Best day ever!
