SRLC 2020 Awards
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 06 Jan '20

06 Jan '20

We're just 10 business days from the deadline for SRLC Awards nominations. It's normal for most of the packets to come in at the last minute and I encourage you to get them finished up and pop them in the mail/email to me so you don't get to the last day and find an obstacle. This is my third go on the awards committee and let me assure you, it's thrilling for the winners. Even the shyest library workers are pleased with a plaque and well-earned appreciation. We all enjoy the feeling of being recognized by our peers for a job well done. This is your opportunity to put together a nomination packet for one of four awards being given at the Small and Rural Libraries Conference in Traverse City, April 13-15, 2020. Please consider who you know that meets the quality of excellence in the profession. Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? Do you have a Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels? We want to hear from you! Self-nominations are accepted for the Mendel award that goes to a library and it includes a cash prize of $1,000! Nominations are due by Friday, January 17, 2020 to norriss2(a)michigan.gov or by post to Sonya Schryer Norris, Library of Michigan, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI 48909. There will be four awards in 2020. The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Patron Service Award (includes children's services) * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) CRITERIA Criteria 1: Nomination packet (1-5 points): Does the nomination packet contain letters of support from appropriate individuals such as respected community members, respected members of the library community, library patrons, library friends and library board members concerning the person or library's accomplishments? A typical nomination packet is 5-10 pages. Criteria 2: Unique accomplishments (1-10 points): Does the nomination packet contain examples of accomplishments that make this person or library stand out from the other nominations? What's unique for a small or rural library might be within normal operations for a mid or large library. Criteria 3: Quality of accomplishments (1-10 points): Does the person or library exemplify the best in current library practices? Are they doing more than old-fashioned or routine library service and truly striving for excellence as identified by modern-day best practices including but not limited to activities such as community engagement, diversity of collections & programming, and progressive policies? Please note that Library Cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination. The nomination may come from another library, a library user, a community business or organization, or a library cooperative. Self-nominations are also accepted! by Jeff Milo 03 Jan '20

03 Jan '20

Our new podcast is LIVE! https://alittletooquiet.podbean.com/e/a-little-too-quiet-bird-box-author-jo… ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jeff Milo <jeffmilo(a)ferndalepubliclibrary.org> Date: Thu, Dec 19, 2019 at 3:59 PM Subject: Ferndale Library’s New Podcast “A Little Too Quiet” Launches January 3 To: Jeff Milosovich <jeffmilo(a)ferndalepubliclibrary.org> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Jeff Milo, FADL Marketing/Media Coordinator jeffmilo(a)ferndalepubliclibrary.org - Ferndale Library Launches Podcast January 3 on all Major Podcast Apps Online at: https://alittletooquiet.podbean.com/ 248-546-2504 Ferndalepubliclibrary.org Ferndale Library’s New Podcast “A Little Too Quiet” Launches January 3 Bird Box Author Josh Malerman Featured in Debut Episode FERNDALE, Mich. (DEC. 20, 2019)-- The Ferndale Library will debut a new podcast on all major podcast apps this winter. “A Little Too Quiet” is a new and exciting way for the library staff to engage with patrons. The enlightening (as well as entertaining) content, produced in-house, might otherwise be formatted for an on-site program or event, but will instead be delivered in audio form. The library also hopes to use the podcast to connect to the grander book-loving community worldwide, kicking off with a premiere episode that features Bird Box author Josh Malerman on Jan. 3. The podcast’s name, “A Little Too Quiet,” is a nod to the fact that libraries everywhere have evolved beyond the longstanding perception that they are silent institutions meant only for peaceful reading where librarians sternly shush anyone speaking above hushed tones. That’s just not the case anymore, and the new podcast aims to demonstrate the ways in which the Ferndale Library and libraries everywhere have evolved into 21st-century community centers where, yes, occasional loudness is more than accepted. Episodes will showcase unique library resources, promote library programs and events, and feature discussions on literary news, the special experience of book clubs, the ongoing outreach efforts of Youth Services Librarians, and the history of the library. This coming year, 2020, marks the 90th anniversary of the Ferndale Library. There will be content that unveils the history of the building, while also engaging patrons to share their favorite memories and experiences about the Ferndale Library. There will also be lots of local author interviews, starting with Malerman in the premiere episode, as well as conversations with Michael Zadoorian, Kathe Koja, and more. “A Little Too Quiet” also serves as a way for patrons to stay engaged with their library during the snowier months when travel is more challenging. Now, library patrons can hear from their library while they’re at home, at the gym, or on the go, just by putting in some earbuds. Along with being hosted at the library’s main website, “A Little Too Quiet” will also be available on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Subscribe now by searching for “A Little Too Quiet” on your favorite podcast app, or visit: https://alittletooquiet.podbean.com/.
