Additional E-rate Notes
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 10 Jan '20

10 Jan '20

Greetings Michigan Library Community, Thanks to Sheryl Knox for this explanation about Cat 2 funding and encouragement to take advantage of E-Rate discounts. I have a couple of additional notes: * Coming to the Small and Rural Libraries Conference? There will be an E-Rate panel with me, Joe Polasek, and Matt Stark of the MiSEN about the new horizon of E-Rate in Michigan. It's not your last director's program any longer with the MiSEN! Check the booklet for time and location. * Not quite sure what the MiSEN is or how it could benefit you? It's a Michigan fiber network originally built for schools that now is open to libraries. Libraries are responsible for the last mile connection and then they would benefit from: * Up to 10 Gig at under 50 cents a MB * A consortium application where the library workload for cat 1 funding would be reduced to signing a yearly Letter of Agreement * You're still on your own for cat 2 so if you're interested in those discounts, don't miss Joe's webinar! * Joe Polasek has 100% of his time devoted to E-Rate and while he is assigned to schools, he's a strong advocate for libraries. We're lucky to have him! I am still the library coordinator. The email address to contact for help is erate(a)michigan.gov<mailto:erate@michigan.gov> - that will reach Joe, myself, and our consultant at E-Rate Central so you get to the best person to address your concern most quickly. Have a great day. Why should you care? E-rate Category 2 funding can be used for network equipment, cabling, WiFi systems, firewalls, and support services. Of course there are footnotes and details, which you can read about here<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usac.…>. The way I look at it, if there are pressures on my budget because of things like declining penal fines or lower library fine revenue, then why not claim more of the money that my community is paying into the USF system anyway? I have to buy these things for my library regardless, so let's allow the feds to pay part of the bill. This webinar is NOT an overall "how to apply for E-rate". It IS about how the funding formula for the Category 2 program is changing. Spoiler: the pool of money you are eligible for is probably bigger than ever. Fw: [Mamelist] Fwd: MDE Survey to Update Top 10 Strategic Plan
by Steven Bowers 10 Jan '20

10 Jan '20

Important survey request on K-12 education. The library ecosystem in Michigan spans an entire lifetime and all libraries need to be united. Please consider taking action to include K-12 libraries. It is a very brief survey (I just took it). -Steve ________________________________ From: mamelist-bounces(a)mcls.org <mamelist-bounces(a)mcls.org> on behalf of Lester, Kathy via Mamelist <mamelist(a)mcls.org> Sent: Thursday, January 9, 2020 10:54 PM To: mamelist <mamelist(a)mcls.org> Subject: [Mamelist] Fwd: MDE Survey to Update Top 10 Strategic Plan The Michigan Department of Education announced today that it has opened an online survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/top10planreview> to review and update Michigan’s Top 10 in 10 strategic education plan (see the forwarded message). The survey closes on February 7, 2020. In the current Top 10 in 10 Goals and Strategies, item 2.7a is: a) Ensure that all students have access to libraries and media centers within their school, district, and/or community. Ensure that such resources are appropriately staffed to ensure system integrity. In the new survey, providing equitable access to school libraries staffed by certified school librarians is not an option in their list to rate as important; however, there is a place to add "Other." Please respond to the survey by adding equitable access to school libraries staffed by certified school librarians in "Other" and then rating it as one of the top 5 priorities. I believe it will only take a few minutes to fill out the survey. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! --Kathy Kathy Lester, MLIS, MA Advocacy Chair, Past-President 2014 Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) Region 3 Director American Association of School Librarians (AASL) School Library Media Specialist / Technology Coach SL21 Model Library, 2017-2018 SL21 Exemplary Ranking - Michigan School Libraries for the 21st Century 2019-2022 East Middle School, Plymouth-Canton Schools ISTE Making IT Happen Award Winner 2017 MAME Michigan School Library Program of the Year 2012 State Librarian's Excellence Award Winner kathyL(a)mimame.org<mailto:kathyL@mimame.org> twitter: @LibraryL<https://twitter.com/LibraryL> 810.333.5873 ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Martin Ackley <MDE(a)govsubscriptions.michigan.gov<mailto:MDE@govsubscriptions.michigan.gov>> Date: Thu, Jan 9, 2020 at 2:03 PM Subject: Michigan Department of Education Press Release To: <kathyl(a)mimame.org<mailto:kathyl@mimame.org>> [MDE Logo] Press Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, 517-241-4395 Bill Disessa, Spokesperson, 517-335-6649 Survey Opens for Public Input on Updating Top 10 Strategic Plan January 9, 2020 LANSING – An online survey<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDAsInVy…> is being offered for the public to help review and update Michigan’s Top 10 in 10 strategic education plan, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced today. “We’re asking the public to help shape Michigan’s education focus,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “It is my expectation, and that of the State Board of Education, that an updated plan will be more streamlined and focused, and will have measures that align with the goals to help us monitor progress toward becoming a top education state.” Since February 2016, the current strategic education plan for making Michigan a Top 10 education state in 10 years has been the guiding document for Michigan’s education efforts. During the September 2019 State Board of Education meeting, Dr. Rice expressed the need to review and update that plan. The Top 10 in 10 plan is the state’s plan to drive improvement in the education system for Michigan’s children. That is why it is important, Dr. Rice said, to get input and feedback from the public. Based on recent interviews with State Board of Education members, education stakeholders and partners, tribal partners, and MDE staff, potential goals were explored and are included within the survey for input. A strategic plan drives priorities; concentrates energy and resources; strengthens operations; and sets measures of success to ensure all stakeholders are working together toward common goals. The survey will close on February 7, 2020. The link can be found on the MDE website at www.michigan.gov/Top10in10<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVy…>. A draft of the updated plan is expected to be presented to the State Board of Education in late spring of 2020. ### * Top 10 Survey.pdf<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVy…> ________________________________ [Michigan Department of Education Logo]<https://lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVy…> Questions?
