Questions of library privacy and training
by Oscar DeLong 27 Feb '20

27 Feb '20

Does anyone know of any training opportunities specifically dealing with library privacy? I am looking for in-depth training on library privacy, legal issues, application of case law, etc. I want as much detail as possible about all the legal protections specific to libraries in the state of Michigan. We are being questioned about our need for generic library user accounts and would also be interested in learning what policies others have on the usage of generic user accounts. Thank you in advance, Oscar DeLong oscar.delong(a)baycollege.edu<mailto:oscar.delong@baycollege.edu> Director of Library Services Bay de Noc Community College (906) 217-4076

Trying to Decide Where to Use a LM Continuing Education Stipend? Try These!
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 27 Feb '20

27 Feb '20

Greetings! Applications for this quarter's Continuing Education Stipends are due by March 31. Trying to decide what event to attend? Past stipend recipients have this to say: Library Publishing Forum (May 4-6) This was my fourth time attending this conference and it is always a fantastic mix of both big picture ideas, and practical suggestions on ways to continue to support your library publishing programs, as well as great networking opportunities. Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) (September 30-October 3) The ARSL conference in Vermont was my first time to attend a national small and rural library event and I was very pleased with what I learned and the relationships I established with library personnel from across the country. This conference was amazing and it was a wonderful experience. I brought home so many new and exciting ideas. I highly recommend the ARSL Annual Conference! YALSA Symposium (November 6-8) Each of the sessions I attended proved to be outstanding and left me writing at a frantic pace as I attempted to jot down all the ideas I wanted to implement in my library. As community anchor institutions, libraries are leveraging their assets in response to the opioid crisis that has gripped the country. After 16 months of research, OCLC, and the Public Library Association have released a call to action on how libraries can address the opioid crisis in their communities. Fwd: [MeLCat] Question about cellular signal boosters
by Stephanie Mallak Olson 26 Feb '20

26 Feb '20

-------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [MeLCat] Question about cellular signal boosters Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2020 12:34:46 -0500 From: John A. Cargo via MeLCatlist <melcatlist(a)mcls.org> Reply-To: John A. Cargo <j.cargo(a)vlc.lib.mi.us> Organization: Iosco-Arenac District Library To: melcatlist(a)mcls.org <melcatlist(a)mcls.org> Hi, This is an issue that everybody has had over the years. Inside some of our buildings, especially in rural areas, we've had spotty or even non-existent cellular signals. Recently, one of our branches had voices concerns about being unable to make an emergency call from inside a library building on their cell phone. Or even just getting and making calls. One of the proposed solutions from the township's city manager was installing an extender--basically a micro cell tower--inside the building. The problems with that are: 1. The extender only supports one specific carrier. 2. It uses the library's Internet connection. 3. Other users with devices from the same carrier could use the extender. Another possibility is using a signal booster, such as one from WeBoost. The ones they sell are carrier agnostic, plug-and-play and will work with multiple carriers at the same time, but: 1. Depending on how the external antenna is aimed, it will prioritize the strongest cell tower signal first. So there's no guarantee that it would work with everything consistently. 2. You have to register the booster with the carrier (though it's stated that most carriers approve of them anyway). 3. A bit more expensive than an extender. I personally have no experience with signal boosters or cellular in general. My question is: Has anyone used a signal booster or have some similar solution to improve cellular signals inside a building? Thanks. -- John A.
