Fine-tuning the Listserv Spam Filters
by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Have you seen the "_______SPAM_____" in the subject line of Michlib-l posts recently? There has been an increase in bots searching, collecting, and submitting information on the internet and our filter for sending to the listserv is working overtime. There has been some finetuning of the spam filters on the listserv to help keep spam out and the "_______SPAM_____" in the subject is a result of that endeavor. This will get better as time goes on and fine-tuning the filtering lessens. As this get sorted, be mindful of clicking on links, documents, and double checking the sender email address before replying or replaying all. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we navigate the new era of the internet! Happy Fall! Always, Shauna Quick Library Technology Access Consultant Library of Michigan, 702 W. Movie Licensing - Outside groups using our rooms
by Andrea Ingmire 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Hi all, Wondering how you handle outside groups using your library room(s) for film screenings? We seem to have more groups who want to show a film/movie/documentary at the library. We've explained movie licensing requirements (and that they can't use our license), but many groups are confused by this... Just wondering how other libraries handle this situation. I'm not into policing this, but I do think it might be helpful to provide some kind of guide for groups wanting to do this. Questions we get include, but are not limited to: 1. If I'm showing this film to my membership group at our annual meeting (example: Lake Superior Art Association) - and it's not 'open to the public' do I still need permission? 2. Does this specific film need permission? 3. How do I get permission to show this film? 4. Why can't I show a film from Netflix, Disney or other streaming platform that I pay for personally... 5. Doesn't the library cover this for me? And a follow up question. If we tell people that this is required, and they don't do it. Are we liable for the performance rights infraction? We show a fair number of films, and I think this gives the public the impression that they can do this too! Michigan Library Privacy Act
by Andrus, Miriam 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Happy Wednesday Everyone, I am curious what your library does to comply with the Michigan Library Privacy Act when your patrons want to share their account information with someone else. Currently, we have physical forms that patrons have to sign giving consent for a designated someone else to access their account. Are any of you doing a digital signature/form to allow access to patron accounts? Thanks for your insight. -Miriam [cid:f1798bca-cde4-4f1e-ae19-268ddbe67eb7] Miriam Andrus, MLS Director, Grace A. This requirement goes int effect on Friday October 2, 2026, and any NEW hiring of a minor employee or engaging of a new minor volunteer on or after October 2 will have to comply with the new procedure. Beginning Oct. 2, 2026, employers and minors will use YEPP to complete the youth employment permit process through one statewide system. Local school districts and nonpublic schools will no longer issue youth employment permits. Important: YEPP is a new platform for managing youth employment permits. The launch does not change Michigan’s youth employment laws or requirements. All other youth employment laws remain unchanged. The new system will: * Allow minors and employers to complete the permit process online at any time of day, providing greater flexibility, particularly during the summer months when schools may have limited hours. * Require employers to register with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) before hiring minors. * Allow employers to notify LEO when a minor’s employment ends. * Provide LEO with greater visibility into youth employment across Michigan. * Create opportunities for LEO to proactively communicate youth worker rights and responsibilities directly to minors and employers. CSLP 2029 slogan/2030 theme Announcement
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Hello! I have returned from the CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Program) Annual Meeting, where we voted for the winning slogan for 2029 and theme for 2030! 2029 Slogan: "Curiosity Takes Root" (theme is Nature) really easy to add "at [Your Library]!" to take this slogan further. (On the poll I sent out this was the top slogan choice for Michigan with 35.6% of respondents.) 2030 Theme: Food and Cooking Food can be a challenging theme for some to grasp, but it has also been a popular theme suggestion for many, many years, and was the top vote-getter in Michigan this year (31.1% of poll responders), as well as at the national CSLP Listening Sessions. At the meeting, state reps and committee chairs had a lengthy discussion about the potential challenges with the "Food and Cooking" theme (the challenges for areas with food scarcity, prohibitions on food or cooking in some libraries, food allergies and food sensitivity concerns, etc.). After the discussion I have confidence that CSLP will be thoughtful and intentional about the slogan, artwork, and resource manuals while gathering library feedback about the best way to implement the theme. There will be many opportunities to provide feedback, and I am always happy to be a conduit for your thoughts and ideas to CSLP. I'd also like to take a moment to again encourage you all to get involved in CSLP if you'd like to have a say in the Collaborative Summer Library Program! You are all eligible to be on committees, and you can put your name in the hat for 2027 committees up until October 15th via this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehZdr1d7obLwwFbYF5w7n4ndpGwEkpdgR… I am so thankful for all the Michiganders that have served on a CSLP committee this past year, your time and input is much appreciated. Other upcoming themes and slogans: 2027: Mysteries Await at Your Library (mystery/detective/suspense) ? Folks, this is going to be a good one! We'll have a reveal of the artwork on our Oct 13th MiYouth! 2028: Libraries are Legendary (mythical creatures) Watch for more "Mysteries Await!" planning opportunities for Summer 2027 coming soon! Seed Library Suggestions Needed!
by Jessica Bostian 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Good afternoon Michigan Libraries! If your institution has/has had a seed library and have any suggestions, tips/tricks, warnings, rules/policies, etc. - would you be willing to send me your input? I am planning to have one at my DPL location next spring, and was curious if most libraries simply purchased their seeds outright, or if you solicited donations, amongst other things. Thank you in advance everyone! Happy Monday!
