Glitch in the Youth Employment Standards Act Work Permit Portal (YEPP Portal)
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 06 Oct '26

06 Oct '26

Hello! Public libraries looking to register in the Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) as part of the new YESA requirements for work permits may experience a delay in registering due to a glitch in the system relating to the wage questions . The system is erroneously asking for wage information for volunteers. LEO Wage and Hour are aware of the problem and are working to fix it. If you experience problems, use the help and technical assistance options in the YEPP portal. That way you will be directly notified by LEO when the issue is resolved. I will share any additional information I receive. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 06 Oct '26

Hello: As of October 2, 2026, Michigan has a new system for obtaining and issuing youth work permits. This new process involves an online registration system, the Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP), managed by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity(LEO), Wage and Hour Division . The amendments to the Youth Employment Standards Act (YESA) that revised the work permit process also changed the hours of the day that minors can be scheduled to work. What do these changes mean for public libraries in Michigan? How must Michigan public libraries comply with the new requirements? How does the new work permitting system affect minors and different volunteer scenarios in public libraries? Join us October 21 @ 10:00am, EST for a webinar on Permits, Portals and Public Libraries: YESA Changes Webinar with Mike Blum Mike Blum is a Labor and Employment Attorney with Foster, Swift, Collins and Smith. Program recommendation: MI true crime documentary
by David Stokes 05 Oct '26

05 Oct '26

Hello there, This past Saturday afternoon we hosted documentary filmmaker Andrew Templeton, who presented his Michigan true crime film *1969: Killers, Freaks and Radicals.* His documentary follows a series of murders of young women between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti during the 1960s--which are largely forgotten today. It has been shown at both state & regional film festivals, and has even won several awards. (It is not currently available for streaming anywhere, however.) We had a small but *very *engaged audience for his film and the Q&A that followed. I should also mention that despite being an independent film, it was *very *professional-looking--not what one comes to expect from low-budget productions. David M.
