PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Provides Reference, Readers' Advisory, and Roving services to the public. o Accurately and efficiently answers patron questions in various forms, including library account information, finding collection items and checking out materials. o Assists and trains patrons in the navigation of the library's website and other online services. Demonstrates and troubleshoots the use of equipment, software, and other technology. o Performs reader's advisory by suggesting age-appropriate materials to patrons. o Refers patron queries and issues beyond the Substitute Librarian's scope of authority to the Librarian-in-Charge or library administration as appropriate. * Promote the Library as a safe space for patrons of all types. o Greets and assists patrons throughout the entire library, assessing patron needs and referring as needed. o Maintains neat and orderly library appearance. o Enforces library policies using a polite and professional approach. * Stays informed of library news and events via review of all forms of library communication: website, email, SharePoint, library newsletter and blog. Contributes content as appropriate. * Accepts special assignments or duties in support of the library's goals and objectives. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library science program. * One year of experience in a customer service environment. * Proficiency with common computer applications, including Microsoft Office and the Internet. * Punctuality and dependability. * Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values. Ability to work with patrons of varied backgrounds, ages, and abilities. * Knowledge of library operations and services, including an understanding of and adherence to fundamental principles of open access to library materials and the privacy rights of patrons. * Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment. * Ability to maintain a calm atmosphere, ensure safety, and respond to emergencies. * Written and verbal communication skills at the level typically acquired with the completion of a Master's degree. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Prior professional experience in a public library. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS * Ability to lift and carry boxes up to 25 lbs. and push carts weighing up to 200 lbs. * Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, or crouch when assisting patrons. * Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate in writing and verbally. * Sufficient vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of materials in both electronic and hard copy form. * Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a fast-paced environment. Yoga and Meditation Programs

Greetings! I am writing to let you know about a couple of unique and inclusive programs that we have hosted at Caroline Kennedy Library in collaboration with the Isha Foundation. We have held their Yoga for Beginners (ages 7 & up) and Meditation for Beginners (ages 12 & up) several times now with each having good attendance every time we've had them. All of their programs are free of charge. Trained instructors with the Isha Foundation facilitate the entirety of their programs: from collecting RSVPs to room arragement and, of course, the presentation iteself. They even show up with a crisp white table cloth for their sign-in table along with fresh yoga mats. Attendees are given a presentation on the topic with our projector and screen, after which guided help is provided by the Isha instructors. After the session, attendees are welcome to stick around to find out about other free sessions they provide in the area. Each time we have hosted the Isha Foundation, I have been greeted by several attendees that are first-time visitors to our library. Very exciting stuff! Hello, We're hosting a five week series of programs on caring for elderly parents. The last meeting is on 12/19. While, these meetings have not been very well-attended, the four people who attend regularly seem to find the advice and discussions very helpful. The presenter creates an atmosphere where people can talk openly and ask difficult questions. Topics have included sibling relationships, care facilities and talking with an elderly relative about driving. This program is offered free by the Hospice of Michigan. Johnston, University of West Georgia* Educating students in STEM areas not only prepares them for successful careers and advanced technical studies, but also for life, by teaching how to think critically and analytically through collaborative, hands-on, problem-solving, and project-based approaches. Technology and media play an important role in effective STEM education. Students engage in STEM learning in many ways and through an array of different digital tools that provide authentic experiences. Digital tools may include, but are not limited to, digital videos, audio, graphics, games, online assessments, scientific datasets, virtual manipulatives and simulations, and other forms of media. Students learn concepts through these interactive digital resources, all of which enrich student learning by enabling them to comprehend, visualize, and explain difficult concepts. This webinar will focus on how librarians can provide learning experiences in the STEM areas through both formal and informal instruction with digital tools. *Melissa P. Johnston* is an Associate Professor at the University of West Georgia, where she teaches graduate courses in in school librarianship and instructional technology. Johnston worked as a school librarian for 13 years in Georgia before obtaining her PhD at Florida State University. Her research and publications focus on school librarians as leaders, the school librarian’s role in technology integration, STEM initiatives in school librarianship, and school librarianship on a global level. Johnston is the author of numerous articles in journals such as *School Library Research, School Libraries Worldwide*, and *School Library Connection*. She is currently the co-editor of *School Library Research* and PI for the REALISD Project, an IMLS funded grant, to provide professional development for rural school librarians to support STEM education efforts in their schools.
