Below you can find information on the webinar being provided by the American Library Association and hosted by the Chapter Relations Office and Public Policy and Advocacy Office, with United for Libraries. This is not a Library of Michigan event and we have no additional information about this webinar other than what is provided below. Please direct any questions to ALA and the United for Libraries division. Topic - Looking Ahead, Planning for Reopening Description - Even as many are working overtime to provide remote and adapted services to their communities, librarians, library staff and boards are planning for reopening when it becomes safe to do so. There are many considerations, from patron and staff safety to dealing with materials, equipment, and space; from bringing staff onsite to restarting programs. Has your state established a task force or working group to launch the planning process? Join a conversation with colleagues from states across the country, share information, ask questions, hear what resources are available and let ALA know what help you need. This conversation is hosted by ALA's Chapter Relations Office and Public Policy and Advocacy Office, with United for Libraries. Time - Apr 24, 2020 02:00 PM in Eastern Time REGISTER HERE: https://michigan-host.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BnbqUzMTTrSpCEOZpkHiqA?ti… (We have no information about recordings. It is normal practice for them to record these, but they have not indicated anything about that on the registration site. Please direct any questions to ALA.) Hello, Thanks, Jim for sending the Capstone information out to the list. You’ve given me a wonderful opportunity for reminding everyone about the great resources that are on the mel.org COVID-19<https://mel.org/covid19> page! Amongst the offerings on that page are the Capstone Interactive eBooks, mentioned in Laureen’s email. A direct link to the Capstone Interactive page is provided, along with login and password information. This allows Michigan library staff access to the eBooks without filling out a form requesting access. In addition, specific login instructions for logging into each of the Capstone resources can be found at https://mel.org/covid19#pebblego. The mel.org COVID-19<https://mel.org/covid19> page also provides access information for expanded offerings from Britannica, EBSCO, Gale, and World Book. Again, thanks so much for providing another opportunity to get the word out about these free supplemental resources! Thanks & How we're doing Curbside Pick Up at Whitefish Bay Library
by Reed, Nyama 23 Apr '20

23 Apr '20

Hello, First, I would like to say thanks for all the well wishes recently. I received so many personal emails that I couldn't keep with with directly responding to everyone. Please know that your kind words helped me get through the last couple of weeks. As many type A's do, I distract myself from grief by staying busy (no worries, I am taking care of myself too). So I thought I'd share our communications and procedures for our coming "curbside pickup" service. Currently our Safer At Home order lasts till Tuesday 5/26, Memorial Day is 5/25, so we are planning curbside through 5/22. Last week the WI Governor said libraries can (not MUST) offer curbside service as of Fri 4/24. You may use this link to our website to see our communication to patrons: https://www.wfblibrary.org/about/curbside_pickup.php Behind the scenes stuff Capacity vs Demand: We can accommodate 48 pickups per day, so we know demand will outstrip availability. We anticipate serving up to 750-1000 people with curbside from 4/27-5/22. FYI, our average day when open has 550 people through the door and 900 items checked out, in a suburb of 14,000. Once all time slots are full through 5/22, we will thank patrons for their patience and understanding during these extraordinary times, and instruct them to check our website and FB for future updates. Staffing: We are planning to have limited staff in the 24,000 sq ft building to support this process while maintaining safe distancing. At this time the plan is to have 3 Circulation Assistants, 2 Reference Librarians, and at least one full time staff as back up support. Reference librarians will be working at the Youth Services and Adult Services desk, one Circ Assistant will be at the front desk, one Circ Assistant at the back computer by delivery, and one Circ Assistant will be working as the runner to put items on carts outside for patron pick up. Safety: Staff will be required to wear masks and gloves, and should maintain the required social distancing of 6 feet or more. If staff feel ill or have a fever, they should contact their supervisor and not come in. Step by Step Procedures: Our Leadership Team put together detailed procedures for staff working during Curbside Pickup. We anticipate these procedures will be reviewed with onsite staff and updated regularly. Since some listservs drop attachments, I have saved our docs to a google to share. Curbside Pickup Procedure - Initial Working Draft <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QOr__kwia_lg5h-YOLTxu-_bHdlZAHOd/view?usp=…><https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jdD0TsHtrjqQPFU0v_aAV_0HbdEG0wfs/view?usp=…>https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jdD0TsHtrjqQPFU0v_aAV_0HbdEG0wfs/view?usp=… Curbside Pickup Appointment Worksheet https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QOr__kwia_lg5h-YOLTxu-_bHdlZAHOd/view?usp=… As always: copy, past, and use whatever you want as you develop your own procedures. Also, from having a zoom meeting with over a dozen library directors today I can attest that we are all doing it differently. Figure out what works best for your location, staff, and community. I offer this just to help people think about things. Saying to yourself, "Well that wouldn't work for us!," helps bc it narrows the list for you. And feel free to email me questions, they help keep me busy and to learn from you. Best of luck friends. I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. Sincerely, Nyama Nyama Y. Reed Library Director Whitefish Bay Public Library 5420 North Marlborough Drive Whitefish Bay, WI 53217 414-964-4380 (main line) Our Mission The Whitefish Bay Public Library, as a cornerstone of the community, is dedicated to connecting people of all ages, inspiring a love of learning and providing easy access to ideas, information and resources. *Please be advised electronic mail becomes a "public record" as allowed under public record laws when sent or received as part of normal business processes.

MeL Minute: eBooks K-8 and NoveList (Diverse Texts)
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 23 Apr '20

23 Apr '20

[NoveList screen shot]Simplify the Struggle to Find Books for EVERY Learner The Michigan eLibrary offers a lot to support early literacy learning. There are several connections between MeL and early literacy efforts in libraries and schools. Are you familiar with the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy<https://literacyessentials.org/>? The purpose of the early literacy essentials is to improve children's literacy in Michigan. The K-3 Essentials are one of many guiding practices that can have a positive impact on literacy development. They also offer some strategies that the MeL eResources can support. Essential #8 outlines the need for "abundant reading material and reading opportunities in the classroom." In fact, five key areas are stressed: The classroom includes: * a wide range of books and other texts, print, audio, and digital, including information books, poetry, and storybooks that children are supported in accessing; * books and other materials connected to children's interests and that reflect children's backgrounds and cultural experiences, including class- and child-made books; * books children can borrow to bring home and/or access digitally at home; * comfortable places in which to read books, frequently visited by the teacher(s) and by adult volunteers recruited to the classroom; * opportunities for children to engage in independent reading of materials of their choice every day, with the teacher providing instruction and coaching in how to select texts and employ productive strategies during reading, feedback on children's reading, and post-reading response activities including text discussion. eBook Collection With over 12,000 eBook titles available at their fingertips (including Diary of a Wimpy Kid!), it is easy to point users to the eBook K-8 Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> in MeL. This will "give students access to a wide-range of books" and have them "access books digitally at home." One aspect of Essential #8 that is a bit more challenging for teachers, librarians and students to identify is "include books and other materials connected to children's interests and that reflect children's backgrounds and cultural experiences." How does one go about doing that? Is there a standard list that identifies whether characters are from an African, Asian, homeschool or LGBTQ background? What about lists of books with Native American heritage, children with disabilities or those who might be on the Autism Spectrum? Reader's Advisory Support With NoveList K-8 Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> and NoveList Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, it has never been easier to make selections based on diversity. Simply go to the eResource list in MeL, open either database and select All Kinds of Lives, located in the left-hand navigation. (In NoveList Plus, you must be in the age range of zero to teen for it to display). Using this reader's advisory tool can simplify the struggle to find books that support EVERY learner in your classroom, library or community. Brought to you by Ann Kaskinen from the MeL Team. April 22 radio interview with Baldwin's Jeff Jimison about COVID-19 project
by Doug Koschik 23 Apr '20

23 Apr '20

Hello everyone, https://youtu.be/OAijE5m9Gaw As I wrote at the end of March, Baldwin's Idea Lab (i.e., makerspace) has become involved in the production of face shields and other PPE for first-line responders. Jeff Jimison, the Idea Lab's supervisor, is spearheading the project. The link above is to a 16-minute-long interview with Jeff. It provides a lot of information not only about the production of COVID-19 personal protection equipment, but also about Baldwin's Idea Lab in general. Individuals and organizations have been very generous in their support of this project. The Baldwin Public Library Trust has so far received approximately $30,000 in donations for it. I want to thank especially those from the library community who have graciously donated. As are all of you, Baldwin is continuing to provide a wide array of library services to the public during the shutdown--but by using alternate means, especially digital. We're also proud, however, that we are providing practical assistance to hospitals, fire departments, senior centers, etc., during this pandemic. I hope that all of you are staying well. Successful Curbside Pickup Services: Best Practices
by Andrea Ingmire 22 Apr '20

22 Apr '20

Hi all, Looking for feedback from any library who ran a successful curbside pickup process prior to EO 2020-20 when all of that had to cease. I'd love to hear how you addressed these questions: 1. Did you impose limits on # of titles for pickup/patron? 2. Did you have a family pack, or some other librarian collected set of picture books by topic to offer families who may not have time to place individual titles on hold? 3. Any advice on how to stagger pickup appointments, or how to encourage folks to spread out while waiting for pickup? 4. What about your ILS generated holds notifications? Did you change messages with new instructions regarding curbside pickup? 5. Any other helpful tips, or even things that didn't work for you? We were focused on getting previously requested holds out for people, so we didn't get an actual curbside system setup, and I'd like to be ready for offering this as soon as we get the green light to open in some capacity. Thanks!
