Community Programming Innovator Award 2020: Jane Gyulveszi

Sometimes the Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference Committee receives a nomination that demonstrates exceptional service, creativity, or community impact but that doesn’t necessarily fit in any one awards category. In these cases, the committee has chosen to honor a nominee with a special acknowledgement of their contributions to their library and community. Jane Gyulveszi, recently retired Director of the Bellaire Public Library, is this year’s Community Programming Innovator Award winner. Jane Gyulveszi came to the Bellaire Public Library as Director in 2015 after two years of service at the Devereaux Public Library and many years owning a bookstore in Ann Arbor. Bellaire Public Library is a Class I Public Library located in a village of 1,000 people. In the five years that Jane was at Bellaire Public Library, she transformed services, managing growth in circulation, patron visits, program attendance and community partnerships. She also transformed the library’s physical space to make it possible to hold many different kinds of activities in the library’s 3,000 square foot building. When Jane started at Bellaire Public Library, annual summer reading programming attracted 10-20 kids each year. From 2015 to 2019, those registration numbers changed to 80-120 kids each summer. Jane worked to connect to the schools, bringing school buses of children over to visit the library and learn about its services. During her time as Director, the library launched preschool programming, a young adult book club, knitting groups, genealogy groups and a number of adult programs. She worked with the Friends of the Library, the Library Board of Trustees, the library staff, and library volunteers to purchase resources for the library and build a variety of programs. Jane ran four book groups including partnering with Grass River organization for environmental readings, local churches for inspirational books, and mindfulness readings with local yoga students. The library began showing movies, hosting travelogues, holding local photography contests, and coordinating visits with local and national authors. Each year Jane worked with the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce to coordinate live music events during the summer as well as partnering for the “Light Up the Night” winter event, which included partnering with a local restaurant for a soup night that brought in more than 400 people. Jane invited Zingerman’s Bakery to present about the history of their business, hosted readings with “Charles Dickens” for Christmas, and had half of the village show up to watch Elvis perform. She engaged different groups of people in the community by inviting community members to wear their Red Wings attire for a showing of “The Russian Five” and holding annual sales with antique vendors in the library’s parking lot. She held several costume contest events to celebrate events like the anniversary of Woodstock (with live music, of course!) and the Wizard of Oz. She took the library on the road to places such as a local butterfly house and participated in the annual Bellaire Rubber Ducky Festival. Jane’s work at Bellaire Public Library reaffirms that small libraries can offer big services. Her creativity and innovation in programming have inspired her staff and her community to think big. Kay Rankin, President of the Bellaire Friends of the Library described Jane as “a creative, enthusiastic, and energetic leader . . . She makes people feel needed and appreciated. Thanks & How we're doing Curbside Pick Up at Whitefish Bay Library

Hello, First, I would like to say thanks for all the well wishes recently. I received so many personal emails that I couldn't keep with with directly responding to everyone. Please know that your kind words helped me get through the last couple of weeks. As many type A's do, I distract myself from grief by staying busy (no worries, I am taking care of myself too). So I thought I'd share our communications and procedures for our coming "curbside pickup" service. Currently our Safer At Home order lasts till Tuesday 5/26, Memorial Day is 5/25, so we are planning curbside through 5/22. Last week the WI Governor said libraries can (not MUST) offer curbside service as of Fri 4/24. You may use this link to our website to see our communication to patrons: https://www.wfblibrary.org/about/curbside_pickup.php Behind the scenes stuff Capacity vs Demand: We can accommodate 48 pickups per day, so we know demand will outstrip availability. We anticipate serving up to 750-1000 people with curbside from 4/27-5/22. FYI, our average day when open has 550 people through the door and 900 items checked out, in a suburb of 14,000. Once all time slots are full through 5/22, we will thank patrons for their patience and understanding during these extraordinary times, and instruct them to check our website and FB for future updates. Staffing: We are planning to have limited staff in the 24,000 sq ft building to support this process while maintaining safe distancing. At this time the plan is to have 3 Circulation Assistants, 2 Reference Librarians, and at least one full time staff as back up support. Reference librarians will be working at the Youth Services and Adult Services desk, one Circ Assistant will be at the front desk, one Circ Assistant at the back computer by delivery, and one Circ Assistant will be working as the runner to put items on carts outside for patron pick up. Safety: Staff will be required to wear masks and gloves, and should maintain the required social distancing of 6 feet or more. If staff feel ill or have a fever, they should contact their supervisor and not come in. Step by Step Procedures: Our Leadership Team put together detailed procedures for staff working during Curbside Pickup. We anticipate these procedures will be reviewed with onsite staff and updated regularly. Since some listservs drop attachments, I have saved our docs to a google to share. Also, from having a zoom meeting with over a dozen library directors today I can attest that we are all doing it differently. Figure out what works best for your location, staff, and community. I offer this just to help people think about things. Saying to yourself, "Well that wouldn't work for us!," helps bc it narrows the list for you. MeL Minute: eBooks K-8 and NoveList (Diverse Texts)

[NoveList screen shot]Simplify the Struggle to Find Books for EVERY Learner The Michigan eLibrary offers a lot to support early literacy learning. There are several connections between MeL and early literacy efforts in libraries and schools. Are you familiar with the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy<https://literacyessentials.org/>? The purpose of the early literacy essentials is to improve children's literacy in Michigan. The K-3 Essentials are one of many guiding practices that can have a positive impact on literacy development. They also offer some strategies that the MeL eResources can support. Essential #8 outlines the need for "abundant reading material and reading opportunities in the classroom." In fact, five key areas are stressed: The classroom includes: * a wide range of books and other texts, print, audio, and digital, including information books, poetry, and storybooks that children are supported in accessing; * books and other materials connected to children's interests and that reflect children's backgrounds and cultural experiences, including class- and child-made books; * books children can borrow to bring home and/or access digitally at home; * comfortable places in which to read books, frequently visited by the teacher(s) and by adult volunteers recruited to the classroom; * opportunities for children to engage in independent reading of materials of their choice every day, with the teacher providing instruction and coaching in how to select texts and employ productive strategies during reading, feedback on children's reading, and post-reading response activities including text discussion. eBook Collection With over 12,000 eBook titles available at their fingertips (including Diary of a Wimpy Kid!), it is easy to point users to the eBook K-8 Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> in MeL. This will "give students access to a wide-range of books" and have them "access books digitally at home." One aspect of Essential #8 that is a bit more challenging for teachers, librarians and students to identify is "include books and other materials connected to children's interests and that reflect children's backgrounds and cultural experiences." How does one go about doing that? Is there a standard list that identifies whether characters are from an African, Asian, homeschool or LGBTQ background? What about lists of books with Native American heritage, children with disabilities or those who might be on the Autism Spectrum?
