References for HBC Specialist Contracting for Water Damage/Mold Remediation
by Stanczak, Cindy 08 Oct '20

Hello all! We're dealing with a large water damage and mold remediation issue here at ADL and have been closed since August 25. It's complicated by the fact that our insurance is denying our claim. I've received quotes from our local ServPro and also HBC Specialist Contracting (hbcspec.com) *If you have worked with them before, please reach out by email directly to me at director(a)albionlibrary.org <director(a)albionlibrary.org>. I'd like to hear about your experience.* I've checked the No Reservation Recommendation, but there's only one entry for water damage and mold remediation right now. Thank you, all, and best wishes! Cynthia Stanczak, MLS Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. Superior St. Albion, MI 49224 (517) 629-3993 Albion District Library: Transforming Minds, Changing Lives. Proudly serving our community since 1919. Online at www.albionlibrary.org, or find us on Facebook! *My working day may not be your working day. Please do not feel obligated to reply to this email outside of your normal working hours.*

Interim Director of the William P. Faust Public Library of Westland
by Reed, Nyama 08 Oct '20

08 Oct '20

Congratulations to my best friend, Jennifer Roth, on being named Interim Director of the William P. Faust Public Library of Westland. October 6, 2020 - The Westland Library Board has appointed Jennifer Roth to serve as the interim Library Director, which was recently vacated by previous director, Ishwar Laxminarayan, who served from June 2018 to September 2020 and resigned earlier this month citing personal reasons. Roth's appointment is effective as of October 5, 2020. Prior to her appointment, Roth served for three years as the Head of Information Services for the Westland Public Library. She has over 17 years in the field of library services, having formerly worked in libraries in Flint and Hartland. Roth graduated from Wayne State University with a Masters Degree in Library Information Science (MILS) in 2003. She is a member of the American Library Association as well as the Michigan Library Association, where she serves on the Planning Committee. "I am excited for Jennifer as she steps into her new role at the Westland Library," commented Mayor Wild. "Throughout her employment she truly excelled at increasing innovation and access to technology for library patrons and has expanded programming geared towards adults of all ages." Roth was selected unanimously by the Westland Library Board and was also highly recommended for the position by the former Library Director. "I am excited to take on this new position," commented Roth. "It has been an honor to be involved in the progress at the library over the past three years and I look forward to continuing that progress alongside our talented staff as we continue to navigate through these challenging times." large print request

I have a patron that needs large print books but also has terrible arthritis and can't hold a hardcover book (or thick paperbacks). If you have thinner (I'll say 1 inch or skinnier) paperback large print books that he might like, could you send me the title and your MeL code? I have tried to search for books for him on MeL, but I usually can't tell if it's hardcover or paperback. If I have a title and your code, I can zero right in on a particular book. Thanks in advance. This will really help our patron! Perri -- Perri Saunders, Director White Pigeon Township Library 102 N. Kalamazoo St., P.O. MeL is Magical: Self-Care Edition
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 08 Oct '20

08 Oct '20

[MeL favicon Description automatically generated]In late February of this year, Vanessa and I crammed into a vehicle to quickly snap a photo for another MeL minute post on road trip resources before rushing off to the remainder of our 12-hour work day. Surprisingly, it was taken B.C.-19 (before COVID-19). Little did we know that more challenges than just simply surviving a family road trip during spring break would soon emerge. In writing about self-care this month, we think this picture is even more appropriate than before. While your outward demeanor might not look like our photo, we are guessing there has been more than one internal moment in which you may have felt intense stress. And, if you have looked like us, you are not alone. It is our sincere hope that you will carve out time for yourself on a regular basis. Once again, MeL has just what you need to rest, relax and just be. [cid:image004.jpg@01D69D6D.536173E0]If you are new to the whole self-care concept and aren’t sure where to start, never fear! Make Yourself Cozy A Guide for Practicing Self-Care<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> by Katie Vaz is available as an eBook via MeL eJournals by typing the keyword “self-care”. This delightful little gem has recipes for creating cozy spaces and experiences along with quick ideas such as picking or buying some flowers to brighten your day, listening to tunes while sipping a warm beverage, writing prompts, and opportunities to draw. Dr. Brené Brown, an incredible qualitative researcher and author of numerous books on the concepts of resiliency, vulnerability, and shame, discovered some of the common attributes in people who overcame tremendous hardship and yet are, as she describes, whole-hearted. You can see her original Ted Talk on YouTube<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCvmsMzlF7o>. One of the common attributes of these whole-hearted individuals was their practice of being creative. Dr. Brown stresses that it isn’t the end product that matters the most. It is the actual practice of engaging in creating something. Even the most craft challenged, self-described non-creative people can gain inspiration from MeL’s DIY section offering the Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> and Home Improvement Resource Center<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. I am always looking for something fun to do and found some amazing ideas on papercrafts including a book called Interactive Mini Scrapbooks<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> by Kathy Orta and an article on building a ladder for a home library. This is especially intriguing to me as I have the legs of a turtle and the arms of a T-rex! Take a few moments and explore MeL for yourself. Just the act of doing something for no other reason than to feed your curiosity is soothing in and of itself. Most important of all, remember that you are not alone and that self-care isn’t selfish. Take care everyone! Additional Self-Care Suggestions 1. Keeping a COVID Journal: Are you writing about your experiences living through the pandemic?
