MeL Minute: MeL Badge Contest Winner
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 08 Jan '21

08 Jan '21

In November, we announced the launch of the new MeL Expert Badge coming in 2021. At that time, we also announced a naming contest to give this new badge program a proper name. The entries have been reviewed and tabulated, and today, we're ready to announce the winner and the new name for the badge. We'd like to send a big thank you to the folks who passed along ideas. With over 40 clever and thoughtful suggestions, you made it difficult to choose! After much discussion, we finally settled on the name MeL Maven Badge. We had 4 people submit the MeL Maven idea but the first person was Heather Wood-Gramza, Director of the Howard Miller Public Library, which makes her our official winner. Congratulations, Heather! We're excited about the new MeL Maven Badge which will be available later this year. The MeL team is fully embracing "just-in-time, what’s in it for me” microlearning modules for adults. We’ll be delivering knowledge of how to use the eResources in everyday language, with real-life examples. We'll be showcasing the top MeL eResources in ways that allow Michigan library staff to take away concrete knowledge of how to use MeL. Learners will be able to dip in and out of these modules as they like, take them in any order, and at their own pace. When they complete the series, they will earn their MeL Maven Badge. Thanks again to all who shared ideas. Stay tuned for the new MeL Maven Badge coming to you later this year! Brought to you by the MeL Team. Supporting Michigan Libraries by Putting You First. Want more information on MeL?  Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your colleagues and networks. zv056 Cass District Library - MelCat Overdue Notices
by Shiloh Pawelski 08 Jan '21

08 Jan '21

Hello all, I am having a hard time following up with overdue notices in MelCat. We have multiple branches in our library, and we quarantine our items for 72 hours. This means that when I run our daily overdue notices, the items could very well be in quarantine in the other branches. I end up calling/emailing patrons who have already returned their items. I thought a good way around that would be to wait 4 days to call the patrons, to see if the items had come out of quarantine. I am hesitant to do that, as we are only able to renew items six days after they've been overdue (book items; A/V is non-renewable), and the first notice occurs when the item has been three days overdue. I had thought that emailing the branches with a list of overdue notices and having them check the quarantine areas would be okay, but that idea is not the best. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas? -- *Shiloh Pawelski* *Interloan Coordinator * *Cass District Library* 319 M 62 Cassopolis, MI 49031 *269. 357 -7822 ext. 102*

reminder: Poetry Out Loud registration deadline
by Katie Wittenauer 08 Jan '21

08 Jan '21

Dear Michigan library community, Today, January 8, is our deadline for Michigan's Poetry Out Loud<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud/> partner registration for the 2021 program. That being said, we have some leeway with the deadline and partner organization this year, and I welcome all inquiries! If you work with high schools, homeschool groups, or other community organizations that partner with high school students, this program may be of interest, and I'm happy to talk with you or your local teachers about potential opportunities. Poetry Out Loud (POL) is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. By encouraging youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. The program and all materials are provided to each partner at no cost. Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of Michigan Humanities (MH), Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Additional support is generously provided by Meijer and the Liesel Litzenburger Meijer Fund. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, this year's State Finals will be virtual, as will the National Finals. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to talking with you soon!
