Help us celebrate excellence in the Michigan library community! Please consider submitting a nomination for the Michigan Library Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, Public Librarian of the Year, Heart of a Champion, Rising Star, Support Staff of the Year, or Frances H. Pletz for Excellence in Service to Youth. Our annual awards not only honor outstanding individuals for their accomplishments, dedication and service, they also highlight our libraries and the amazing work being done in our communities! Nominate a colleague, staff member or library supporter for one of MLA's prestigious awards and help us highlight and promote excellence in Michigan libraries. Nominations are due this Friday, July 17! This year, the MLA Awards Committee decided to create the new Lifetime Achievement Award that is open to librarians from all types of libraries, and change the name and criteria for the Librarian of the Year award to recognize a public librarian. The award is named for Frances H. Pletz, a former Executive Director of MLA, because of her exemplary library service to teens in our state. This award was established in 1978 by the Young Adult Division of the Michigan Library Association and was given to a teen librarian. In 2010, the Pletz Award combined with the Children's Services Award of Merit to create the Frances H. Pletz Award for Excellence in Service to Youth. Winners of this award have provided significant service to youth, ages 0-18, through a library that exposed youth to the library in at least one of the following ways: innovative programming, service on a committee, contributing research, presenting at a workshop or developing materials for a workshop. Speaker Recommendation

Dear Michlib-l, I want to highly recommend Kathryn Remlinger as a presenter. She is a Professor at Grand Valley State University and an author. We recently hosted her through Zoom, this past Monday, for a talk on Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the history/formation of its dialect ("Yooper Talk"). She was incredibly knowledgable, delightful, and answered every question our audience asked in our Zoom chat once she finished her presentation. We had about 60 people register and about 40 attend online. There was even a local article written about Kathryn's presentation for us, in the U.P.! The presentation, in total, took about an hour and 15 minutes. We were very pleased with the content and attendance. Kathryn and I did a practice Zoom session about a week in advance, for about 15-20 minutes. She was wonderful to work with; I will definitely be inviting her back at some point in the future. International Presentation Coming Up: The Library Cooperative Model

All, As the subject notes, I will be presenting the concept and benefits therein of the library cooperative model to a group of international colleagues in a galaxy far, far away. Well, not quite. But pretty close. Malaysia. This presentation will take place on Sunday, July 19 at 9:00 p.m., live from our dining room table :) The title of my presentation is: The Library Cooperative Model: Maximizing Service To Patrons And Value To Member Libraries. Yes, I came up with that rather lofty sounding title all by myself. The background is this. My best friend at UM-SILS was from Malaysia. After our graduation he returned to Malaysia, but we have kept in touch for all these (33+ now) years. Last year my friend returned to the United States for the first time since 1987. He spent a day visiting The Library Network, where the current director indulged me to take part of that time to drive my friend to Commerce Township Community Library. Upon our arrival in the parking lot there my friend took out his pen and wrote in capital letters in his notebook the word COMMUNITY. He said "Jim, this is the direction in which we are going to take public libraries in Malaysia." And he has the ability to make it happen, at least in his own state, where he was recently appointed to serve on his state library board (equivalent to the LOM board here). For many years the concept of the library cooperative and the roles it plays, particularly in the public library, has been a subject of interest for my friend. That interest, combined with his return visit to the United States and recent appointment to his state library board, caused him to ask me if I would be willing to present the concept and functional role of the library cooperative to a group of his colleagues. Sure, why not! It isn't every day one gets to talk up something in which one believes, to a group of folks who are unfamiliar with yet interested in the concept. Truth be told, I don't have a clue as to what a group of Malaysian intellectuals (full disclosure, my friend has a PhD and is currently the Dean of his college at the university where he has worked and taught for many years) could possibly take away from anything I could say/share. But he has a great interest in seeing the public libraries in his home state move forward to adopt the "community" concept, and he believes the cooperative concept will help them get there. So I told him that if he is game, so am I! He has also followed the [ http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ | http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ ] program over the years, and even more so recently as he sees it as yet another tool to use in the "community" concept. During our most recent exchange I told my friend that while MAP was still offline, it would be coming back up on (oops, I almost slipped and told you the go live date) and that it would be functional by Sunday, July 19. As to why this is going to take place at 9:00 p.m. on a Sunday evening, Malaysia is 12 hours ahead of us, time zone wise, and he wanted to ensure that his colleagues who will be attending the presentation, who will include some of his PhD candidates, his state library board, other colleagues, as well as a group of public librarians, were going to be at their best and most fresh, ready to listen and pay attention, at 9:00 a.m. on a Monday morning. I told my friend, who is by a factor of 100 much more serious and studious than I could or would ever be, that if we don't manage to put the attendees to sleep, then we should consider our presentation a success. Results of "Workplace Safety Training"

I heard back from nine (9) libraries and all but one (1) recommended law enforcement: county sheriff's department; Michigan State Police; local police or fire department personnel. At one library, the county emergency manager teamed up with the state police to make a presentation on active shooter/active assailant training. Under the direction of the seven-member governing Board of Trustees, the Library Director plans, coordinates, administers, and directs the operations of the Library, including but not limited to recruiting, hiring, coaching, and mentoring staff; leading all human resources functions; facilities maintenance and care; fiscal management and oversight; and representing the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District as the "public face" of the Library. The Director works closely with staff to support the Library's core values supporting the Library's strategic goals. Question: It's 9:00 A.M.: Do You Know Where Your MAP Program Is? Answer: The Michigan Activity Pass Program is BAAAAACK! (With Mobile Passes)

Good Morning, Following a nearly four month suspension that began the morning of March 17, TLN re-started the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program with 401 active partner destinations shortly before 8:00 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, July 15th: [ http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ | http://www.plymouthrockets.com/michiganactivitypass/ ] Please note that as is the case with much of today's world, MAP partner destinations have opened and are operating under circumstances unseen and unheard of in our lifetimes. That is my way of saying that this is a highly fluid scenario and that as such, MAP partner destinations may close (or re-open) with little or in some cases no, advance warning. We will do our best to keep up to date on what is going on with our MAP partner destinations, and make changes accordingly if and when necessary. That said, if you become aware of a change to the status of a MAP partner destination in your community, please let me know. After all, there are many of you, and far fewer of us. There are a few new features included in MAP that we hope will help enhance the patron experience: 1. Mobile Passes: Please note that there is absolutely no difference between a mobile pass and a printed pass, when it comes to the pass reservation process. The only difference is that a patron will display the completed MAP pass on their mobile device when they arrive at a destination, instead of turning in a printed pass. There is also no way to prevent a patron from printing and turning in a printed pass. Long before any of us had heard of something called Covid-19, our goal was to place additional emphasis on the mobile vs print pass aspect of MAP for this year. The timing of such proved fortuitous, given the changes that have occurred in all of our worlds during the past four months. Truth be told, many patrons have been using mobile passes for MAP for a number of years. So before we took MAP off line on March 17 we surveyed MAP partner destinations to ask them if they were okay when it came to accepting a MAP pass that is displayed on a smart phone or tablet, vs a piece of paper. With the exception of one MAP partner which is currently closed, all of our other partner destinations that replied, indicated they had no problem accepting a mobile pass. I suspect that willingness to do so is even stronger now than was the case five months ago when we sent out the survey. As you can see we have placed heavy emphasis on the mobile passes aspect of MAP, on the landing page of the program. 2. Where I Am Starting Box: Every software platform that involves having to do a search performs better when a particular search strategy is deployed. For the MAP software this has always meant entering the zip code in the Where I Am Starting box. The MAP program now includes "Enter Your Zip Code Here" in the Where I Am Starting box. Having the patron enter a zip code here will deliver optimum search results when using the MAP software. 3. My Home Library box: The "Home Library" language is problematic. While it means something to us, that may not necessarily be the case for MAP patrons. In an attempt to make this more clear, we have included the phrase "Enter the Name of Your Local Library Here" in the My Home Library box. We have retained the previous functionality whereupon when a patron starts to enter the name of their library, the software will auto-fill the box with the library name. We are very pleased to be able to offer the MAP program again, following a four month suspension. Will it be perfect? No, of course not. But it never was. Going forward patrons will encounter a range of difficulties, from showing up at a destination without checking ahead, only to find it closed; to not wanting to wear a mask; to presenting a MAP pass on a mobile phone to destination admissions staff and having them not have a clue as to what this "MAP pass thing" or indeed, what this "MAP pass program" is, etc. Patience and flexibility are the keys for MAP, just as is the case for all of the other challenges libraries are currently facing. If you have MAP related patron questions, please do your best to answer them.
