The Sterling Heights Public Library is currently seeking a Part Time Librarian! This position comes with competitive pay starting at $24.79/hr. with step increases every six months. Additionally, there is paid time off and an annual monetary stipend for employees that hold a masters degree (required for this position). POSITION SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Public Services Area Coordinator, this position is responsible for reference and reader’s advisory services, collection development activities, instruction in the use of the library and its resources, and creating and delivering programs. This is a 24 1/2 hour per week part time position with no health benefits. Work schedule includes 2 evenings, every other Saturday, and every fifth Sunday (during the school year). POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA college or university. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Physical strength and dexterity to handle materials and boxes up to 25 pounds in weight and to transport loaded book carts. Ability to work evening and weekend work schedule. Knowledge of online databases, reference resources, and public computer applications to assist the general public. Experience with the SirsiDynix automation system. Knowledge of popular reading trends in adult literature. Knowledge of tablet and/or mobile devices used for accessing Overdrive, Hoopla, and other digital services. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the general public. LM Workforce Development Starter Collection Offer

Just a reminder to fill out the survey if you'd like a set of workforce development titles for your collection. As part of the workforce development support focus in the CARES and LSTA Acts, the Library of Michigan is offering a free starter collection of approximately 10 workforce development print titles. LM will purchase the books and have them shipped via UPS to your library. We ask that you offer the titles to the public as soon as possible. We anticipate the materials will be available this summer. Materials will be shipped to your library from Emery Pratt. Eligible libraries are legally established public libraries or a community college or tribal libraries providing regular public access to a circulating library collection. Below, is the Governor’s plan for getting back to more normalcy. Note that the loosening of restrictions is directly tied to vaccination rates. Nothing changes as of right now, but the next step would be 55% of the population vaccinated + 14 days. At that time, the remote work requirement would be lifted. The steps progress from there until step 4 - at 70% plus 14 days, the MDHHS order will be completely lifted. It is also expected that an updated MDHHS Order will be released in the next day or so that will probably match the current new CDC guidance on post-vaccine activities. To facilitate this goal, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will base future epidemic order actions on four vaccination-based milestones that, once achieved, will enable Michigan to take a step toward normalcy. “The MI Vacc to Normal challenge outlines steps we can take to emerge from this pandemic as we hit our vaccination targets together,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “On our path to vaccinating 70% of Michiganders 16 and up, we can take steps to gradually get back to normal while keeping people safe. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to rise to the challenge and be a part of the solution so we can continue our economic recovery and have the summer we all crave.” Since Governor Whitmer asked Michiganders to double down on smart public health policies on April 9, Michigan has made significant progress to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives. The number of daily cases has dropped from 649.9 cases per million to 439.3 cases per million, the percent of positive tests has declined from 18.3% to 13.2%, and the number hospitalizations has fallen from 3,780 to 3,520. “We can end this virus on our terms by following the protocols we are putting forward, encouraging everyone in your life to do the same, and ensuring that everyone eligible to receive a vaccine gets one,” said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist. “What we have been observing across our state is that the thing that moves a person to choose to get vaccinated is hearing from someone they know about why it is so important, why they chose to get vaccinated. That means that every person who has not yet chosen to get vaccinated is one conversation away from making that choice. We can make that happen for them and for all of us. The MI Vacc to Normal challenge is a great reminder that we’re all on one team, working towards ending COVID-19.” Recently, Michigan reached another vaccination milestone in record time -- administering more than six million doses of the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, with the latest one million doses being administered in 11 days. Although progress has been made, it is crucial that Michiganders continue to mask up and socially distance as the state takes steps to get back to normal. It is also crucial for everyone to get their second doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, which Michiganders have been doing at a rate of 96.4%, above the national average. “The safe and effective vaccine is the most important tool we have to reduce the spread of COVID-19” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive and chief deputy for health at MDHHS. “By getting shots in their arms as soon as possible, Michiganders can protect themselves, their families and their communities and help end this pandemic as quickly as possible.” Michigan continues to have some of the strongest public health policies in the Midwest. The state still has a mask mandate and capacity limitations on indoor dining, indoor gatherings, and entertainment venues. People looking to start or grow a business will also find tools to help with their marketing plan. Find a Business or Executive In the Find a Business or Executive tab, the search options allow job seekers to research a business. The results include a description of the business, as well as information about its location, the revenue it generates, and the number of people it employs. Find a Job The Find a Job tab allows the user to generate a list of jobs within a geographic range. The advanced search tool allows for narrowing the job search by using specific key words and phrases, as well as specifying a salary range and more detailed geographic range options. Career Resources Job seekers will find the Career Resources tab particularly useful as it provides information about how to prepare for a job search including eight key questions that one might ask when looking for a job to be sure to find the right fit. Learners can also discover how to understand their own strengths and weaknesses and summarize their skill set in order to prepare for a new career opportunity. In addition, the Career Resources tab includes information about how to apply for a job, including tips on how to write a resume and how to connect with hiring managers. This tab also includes information about preparing for an interview and how to follow up after an interview. Mailing Lists, Sales Leads, Emails Although AtoZDatabases is a powerful tool for finding a job, it includes other features that are useful to starting or growing a business as well. The Mailing Lists, Sales Leads, Emails tab allows a user to generate a list of potential customers. By clicking Get Started next to 30 Million Businesses & Executives, a search can be performed using specific parameters such as a business type and business location. The results can be downloaded and used to generate a mailing list of potential business customers. Using the 240 Million Residents search will generate similar mailing lists of potential residential customers within a geographic parameter. The Returns to Public Library Investment: Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Paper

All, I am sharing the attached not because it makes for scintillating reading (it doesn't) but rather, due to the interesting source (Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago) as well as the conclusions of the authors of the paper, which are summarized in quotes (see page 28 of the attached paper) in the third paragraph below. Perhaps the best audience for this is the financial person on your board, and/or in your governing municipality. The second conclusion of the paper's authors would seem to have particular relevance, ie " Second, library capital investments cause students to perform better on standardized tests. In particular, we observe persistent improvement in reading test scores in the years after library capital spending." "We use an event study methodology to show that library capital spending has at least two effects. First, capital library investments cause patrons to use the library more. More residents visit the library, the stock of library materials increases, and more children attend library events. Second, library capital investments cause students to perform better on standardized tests. In particular, we observe persistent improvement in reading test scores in the years after library capital spending. These improvements in reading test scores coincide with increases in library use and are not driven by changing demographics in local communities. Our results highlight the importance of public libraries to children, even in an era with widespread access to the internet and smartphones. In the future, we hope to further investigate the many other ways that public libraries can affect local communities."
