Program Recommendation: Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words

Hello all, I just wanted to join the crowds of people who recommend Larry Martin as a presenter! We recently hosted his WWII In Their Own Words program over Zoom and had some of the best program attendance I've ever recorded, both virtual and in-person. Larry's presentation on Amy Bakker, a woman who lived under Japanese occupation in Java, was incredibly informative and entertaining. Larry himself is always open to questions about both the actual presentation and WWII in general, which is a bonus for library staff and patrons alike. Passing along on behalf of FOML. The Board of Directors of the Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) is pleased to announce that it has approved a special $400 FOML Merit Award for 2020. This award will be based on a Michigan library Friends group's project that was completed successfully in 2020 to support the library during a time when the library was closed and carrying out its services under the restrictions imposed by COVID. Friends groups from any size library in Michigan are welcome to apply for this special Merit Award. Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) Merit Award At the February 3, 2021 FOML Board meeting a motion was approved to award a special $400 FOML Merit Award for 2020. This award will be based on a Michigan library Friends group’s project that was completed successfully in 2020 to support the library during a time when the library was closed and carrying out its services under the restrictions imposed by COVID. Friends groups from any size library in Michigan are welcome to apply for this special Merit Award. To apply for this award your Friends should submit a one-page description of the project answering the following questions: 1. WHAT was the focus of the project? 2. WHO was involved in the project and the intended audience? 3. WHEN did the project begin and end? 4. WHERE did the project take place? Was it a virtual project? 5. Registration open for new digital literacy virtual workshop for Michigan library staff

Registration is now open for a new virtual training for Michigan library staff on creating a digital literacy learning plan for library staff, offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is being offered multiple times through April and May to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities. “Unlocking the Secrets of a Digital Literacy Learning Plan for Library Staff” is designed to equip you with the tools and a process to help you build a learning plan around technology and digital literacy skills for library staff. If you wish your library had such a learning plan in place, but you’re not sure where to start or how to organize it, then this workshop is for you! Developing a learning plan is essential in empowering staff to develop digital literacy and technology skills. In this four-hour virtual workshop, participants will learn the basics of creating a digital learning plan for their library that includes how to leverage collective strengths to build skills and how to incorporate technology competencies and create activities to help staff successfully achieve their digital literacy goals. This workshop is designed primarily for public library staff who have some responsibility or involvement in staff training. The workshop is designed to be interactive and will include small group activities in breakout rooms, and the use of a microphone and camera will be required for successful participation. Registration is just $15 and, because it is funded by the Library of Michigan, is open to Michigan Library staff. Each workshop will run from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Eastern with a 45-minute lunch break. This workshop will only be available as live virtual instruction. At the completion of the workshop, continued support will be provided to participants in the form of six monthly virtual coaching calls. This continued support will be completely voluntary and for the purpose of gaining support in creation and implementation of a digital literacy learning plan for participants’ own libraries. door/people counters inquiry results

Last week I asked michlib about which door/people counters they use. We used to have an infrared interrupt the beam sort of counter until it stopped working, and currently we use a manual clicker where staff click for each person coming in the doors. We're looking to upgrade. Several people requested I share the information, so I'm compiling it here. Thank you to everyone who contributed! Five Stars! Only thing is that it is a little pricy of a startup cost. Most sensors are a few hundred dollars and there is an annual software subscription of a hundred dollars but I find it worth it. We have 10 branches and I have about 15 sensors and they have been great. We can show the patron count of who is in the building in real time on our televisions. Suite 5 | Muskegon, MI 49444 We use VisiCount and have had it for a little over a year. It works well for us. The counter mounts to the door and you can get the info two ways. You can reset the counter every night and manually get the count. We bought the extra package to have the results go to a computer. With this, you do not have to reset the counter and you can make tables or graphs with the software. You can look at the total daily or check a time period and you can compare time periods. You do have to remember to change the batteries once a year in the unit mounted at the entrance. I am not really happy with it because as I'm sure you know, if you have several people come in at once they may not be counted individually. We also have the problem that it is located in our vestibule which is often used by people on their cell phones so if they are moving around breaking the beam we get a greatly increased count. I have looked at the thermal sensing ones which I like because it looks as though they will be more accurate, and have software to access the information, but the cost is holding us back. Maybe when the old one fails I will look again. It is extremely limited in what it can do. We used to be able to use our 20 year old Walker Unit to count people going in and out - and it had a separate little unit that mounted in our office that held hourly, daily, weekly and monthly counts for a few months. This new replacement only holds one statistic - in and out - nothing about hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. And, it has no separate unit to tell you the count. You have to go out to the unit mounted on the door jamb - see the number - and then clear it to start over - each day. So - no memory, no detail, no ease of use. They have other models that have all the bells and whistles - but are very expensive. It seems there is no in between. Melissa Huisman, Hudsonville We use this one and have for many years. Scammers on Facebook

Back in January Emily from Royal Oak posted about scalpers on their facebook page. This just happened to us today! Bots posting over and over in a concert's comments. We were 'finally' able to figure out how to turn off commenting. I'm told that the new business manager makes it nearly impossible to do this, we had to use the 'old way.' I never did find the solution! It was my valiant YS librarian who saved the day. Seems like this might be the next area of trouble with using facebook to promote events. Anyone else seeing this activity yet? Other solutions? We deleted posts and turned off commenting, but I don't know if its better to try and block these 'bot-people-users' instead? We couldn't quite figure that one out. Anyone else sick of facebook yet? Ugh. The less time I spend using it the happier I seem to be, coincidence?
