First up, a quick note to say CONGRATULATIONS on all your work (yes, I'm talking to you) this summer to pull off summer library programming, no matter what shape or what kind of reimagining it took! I have seen and heard so many wonderful success stories. As you wrap up your summer programs and start to gear up for Fall, take a moment to reflect on how far you have come this past year (and a half). I am so proud of how much libraries across Michigan have adapted, and how much care has gone into your work for all in your communities. Thank you for all you do! #MiLibraries Collaborative Summer Library Program's Annual Survey REMINDER: Please complete this summer library program survey<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBq6Yof5mW1gGzDeHroUQ7h09MRZ94kEW…> from the Collaborative Summer Library Program - even if you didn't use "Tails and Tales" this year! CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! (Did you know? All Michigan public libraries are members of CSLP, even if your library opts not to use the slogan/artwork/manual, because LM covers your membership fees on a statewide level using IMLS/LSTA funds.) The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBq6Yof5mW1gGzDeHroUQ7h09MRZ94kEW… Resources IMLS accepting grant proposals The Institute of Museum and Library Services<http://imls.gov/> is now accepting proposals for the 2022 National Leadership Grants for Libraries<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…>. The National Leadership Grants for Libraries program supports "projects that address critical needs of the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance practice in these professions to strengthen library and archival services for the American public." The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program supports "the development of a diverse workforce of librarians and archivists to better meet the information needs of communities being served. Program goals include recruiting, training, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce of library and archives professionals; developing faculty, library, and archives leaders by increasing the institutional capacity of libraries, archives, and of graduate programs related to library and information science; and enhancing the training and professional development of the library and archival workforce to meet the needs of their communities." The deadline for the preliminary proposals is September 24, 2021. A free on-demand informational webinar will be available on the IMLS website<https://www.imls.gov/webinars-archive>. Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture September 2021 Details & link to register: https://www.libraryjournal.com/?event=equity-in-action-sept-2021<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.libra…> Library staff at all levels within their organizations have the power-and the responsibility-to help cultivate an antiracist culture, from evaluating spaces, programs, services, and collections to examining policies and practices to reflecting on one's own implicit biases. Creating an internal culture founded on principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential to building a community-centered library that meets the needs and expectations of its users. In this course, you will learn about the concrete actions library leaders are taking to make their libraries antiracist today and in the future, and the tools that make it possible. Practical coursework, along with targeted support, will take you from theory to application, helping you to transform your library services to better meet the needs of all your patrons-and attract new ones. You'll complete assignments to build your own equity-based initiative over 3+ weeks in an interactive online classroom environment with personal coaching from an expert in the field. In addition, you'll have access to our foundational bonus content-rich supporting materials you can explore at your own pace, including a series of webinars from Library Journal and School Library Journal contributors, readings, activities, and videos. Don't forget the LM CE Stipend can support your professional development needs: www.Mi.gov/CEstipend<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mi.gov…> Project READY is a three-year program funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create professional development for school librarians and other educators focused on racial equity and culturally sustaining pedagogy. The Project READY curriculum aims to do the following: * introduce youth services library staff to research in areas such as race and racism, critical theory, and culturally responsive or sustaining pedagogy. * establish a shared understanding of foundational concepts and issues related to race, racism, and racial equity. * encourage self-reflection related to race and racial identity for both white and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) library staff in public and school libraries. * amplify the work of practitioners and scholars who are providing inclusive and culturally responsive services for youth of color and Indigenous youth. * provide concrete strategies for creating and/or improving library programs and services for Black youth, Indigenous youth, and children and teens of color. Museums and Libraries Join Forces to Boost Vaccine Confidence
by White, Shannon (MDE) 05 Aug '21

"Communities for Immunity" launches at a critical moment for the United States. [https://files.constantcontact.com/546fe8b1501/b25c3c0f-6ea3-4bc1-ba52-4d47e…]<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> Museums and Libraries Join Forces to Boost Vaccine Confidence IMLS, CDC, Key Library and Museum Organizations Launch “Communities for Immunity” [https://files.constantcontact.com/546fe8b1501/8d0e93b4-2f57-4d4c-8f64-b6df9…] WASHINGTON, DC—The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the American Library Association (ALA), and the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) today announced the launch of Communities for Immunity<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…>, an unprecedented partnership to boost COVID-19 vaccine confidence in communities across the United States. This important project launches at a critical moment as the United States is experiencing both a surge in COVID-19 cases related to dangerous new coronavirus variants and an urgent need to dramatically increase vaccination rates. “Throughout the pandemic, our nation’s museums and libraries have supported their communities with critical educational and social services,” said Laura Lott, President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums. “As community pillars and trusted messengers, they are well-positioned to help build trust in and overcome hesitation to the COVID-19 vaccines.” “IMLS is honored to join with the CDC and partners ASTC, AAM, ALA, and NNLM on this national program,” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “Good information and support at the local level through Communities for Immunity and the ongoing engagement of museums and libraries will strengthen our continued fight against the pandemic.” “As we continue to see the Delta variant spread across the country, we must come together to fight health misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine — the best tool we have to defeat this virus,” said Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General. “Museums and libraries are the vaults that hold our knowledge and history. They educate us on the discoveries and blunders of our past. That’s the foundation upon which Communities for Immunity will equip the American people with accurate, reliable, science-based information. This partnership comes at a crucial time. We need more trusted messengers who let science lead, as they help Americans make informed health decisions for our families.” “Access to information about vaccines and trusted messengers to effectively convey it locally is a matter of life and death. America’s 117,000 libraries provide both, serving communities at greatest risk of contracting the coronavirus and those most hesitant to receive the vaccine,” said Patty Wong, President of the American Library Association. “The American Library Association is proud to join the Communities for Immunity initiative to offer resources and funding to supercharge the capacity of our nation’s second responders.” “There is a long history of partnering with museums, libraries, and science and technology organizations to promote health education in the U.S.,” said Judy M. Gantt, CDC Museum Director. “Through the Communities for Immunity partnership, museums and libraries are supporting CDC’s mission to prevent disease, injuries, and disability from COVID-19, while delivering fact-based information on the science of COVID-19 and helping build confidence in the vaccine.” With support from the CDC and IMLS, ASTC will lead Communities for Immunity, which will provide funding to museums, libraries, science centers, and other cultural institutions to enhance vaccine confidence where it matters most: at the local level. Building on the many ways they have supported their communities during the pandemic, the partnership will activate museums and libraries to create and deliver evidence-driven materials and develop resources, programs, and approaches specifically designed to help museums and libraries engage diverse audiences in building trust in the COVID-19 vaccine. This includes working in partnership with ASTC-member experts on science and community engagement. Museums and libraries will leverage resources and research available on vaccines and variants disseminated by IMLS’s research partnership with OCLC and Battelle, the Reopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums (REALM) project. “Museums and libraries are defined by their commitment to serving their communities, and we are honored to support them in doing what they do best: engaging their communities in locally-resonant learning and action to tackle big challenges,” said Christofer Nelson, President and CEO of ASTC. “As an association committed to increasing understanding of—and engagement with—science and technology among all people, we know that now is the time to lean into helping our communities through the science-focused challenge of COVID-19.” Additional organizations joining in the effort include the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM), and the Urban Libraries Council (ULC). This national coalition of partners are creating a Community of Practice to develop and refine vaccine education resources that will be shared with the broader museum and library community. Communities for Immunity builds on a number of earlier and ongoing efforts to activate engagement in vaccine confidence work, including REopening Archives, Libraries and Museums <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> (REALM)<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…>, a research partnership between OCLC, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Battelle; Vaccines & US<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…>, led by the Smithsonian and in collaboration with a range of partner organizations and individuals; V<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…>accinate with Confidence<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> from the CDC; We Can Do This<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and the It’s Up to You<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fr20.rs6.n…> campaign led by the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative. Updated Covid-19 resources and information
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 05 Aug '21

05 Aug '21

Greetings! The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released an updated recommendation document "Operating Schools Safely." COVID-19_Guidance_for_Operating_Schools_Safely_728838_7.pdf (michigan.gov)<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/coronavirus/COVID-19_Guidance_for_Operat…> . While this recommendation is not directed at Michigan public libraries (public libraries are not treated the same as schools for purposes of Covid-19 guidance), and is not a legal requirement, this document contains information that can be useful to public libraries in determining local circumstances and risk with regards to Covid-19 and its variants. This recommendation document does a good job of explaining risk assessment as it pertains to Covid-19 in local communities and has links to useful resources to assess that risk. Those resources and this information are not only applicable to schools. Public libraries can utilize information in this recommendation to assist in assessing Covid-19 risk for purposes of determining programing and policies appropriate for their circumstances. In addition to the K-12 school recommendation document, I have also linked to CDC resources showing community spread data by state https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#cases_community and county https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view . Michigan has been moved from "moderate community transmission status" to "significant community transmission" status. 44 counties in Michigan are at "significant" or "high" transmission status compared to less than 10 counties a week ago. Libraries with questions concerning their community risk should contact their local Health Department https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/0,5885,7-339--96747--,00.html Have a great day! Thanks! Clare

Closes Sunday, August 8! CEO position-Topeka & Shawnee County (KS) Public Library
by Jobeth Bradbury 05 Aug '21

05 Aug '21

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY (KS) PUBLIC LIBRARY CLOSES SUNDAY! The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, a municipal corporation governed by an appointed Board of Trustees, seeks an accomplished Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is committed to sparking curiosity and connections through literacy and learning in Topeka and Shawnee County, Kansas. The new leader of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library<https://tscpl.org/>, Library Journal/Gale's 2016 Library of the Year, will be ready to enhance the Library's role in a world that continues to change. Transforming the lives of its citizens through its five community impact goals<https://tscpl.org/about/community-impact-goals>, the CEO reports to a ten-member governing Board and works collaboratively with The Library Foundation, the Friends of the Library, a stellar staff (213 positions), and community partners to provide essential library services and programs charting a clear course. This award-winning Library, supported by a statutory mill levy which provides an annual $22.3 million budget, has a 21st-century landmark building featuring the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery, the Millennium Café, and the Chandler "Booktique" (bookstore and gift shop). In 2019, more than 2,000 people walked through its doors daily and checked out more than 2.3 million items. The library's mobile services, augmented with a new fleet of vehicles, traveled across the County and provided services to 55 senior living facilities, 80 preschools and many homebound customers. The library also serves customers through a 24/7 digital branch and offers state-of-the-art technology, youth programs that encourage learning and reading, accessibility services addressing the needs of older readers and persons with disabilities, and reference and research tools. There is something for everyone at TSCPL! Topeka<https://www.topeka.org/>, (the state capital and third largest city in Kansas), is in the heart of Shawnee County along the Kansas River and is a thriving seat of government, education, cultural events, and entrepreneurial spirit. In 2017, Kiplinger Finance Magazine designated Topeka one of the top ten cities for the next decade. Neighborhoods, schools, civic and cultural activities, and economic incentives combine to make Topeka one of the best small metros in the United States with an overall cost of living more than 10 percent below the national urban area average. There are 60,000 university students within a 60-mile radius of Topeka, including Topeka's own Washburn University flanked by Kansas University to the east and Kansas State University to the west. The city draws young talent to make up a diverse and highly skilled workforce and add to its vibrancy and appeal. The arts are alive and well in Topeka with more than 20 galleries, performing and visual artist venues and the NOTO Arts District that offers studio space and display opportunities in a collaborative environment. Topeka's Momentum 2022 plan has instilled a can-do attitude in our community. With more than 30,000 people working in the downtown area daily, there is momentum for new businesses, retail, restaurants, events, and community pride! Responsibilities. The Chief Executive Officer formulates and oversees implementation of library goals, policy recommendations, procedures, programs, and projects in accordance with policies established by the Library Board of Trustees and mandated by the laws of the state of Kansas. Providing vision, direction, and leadership, the CEO is responsible for, but not limited to, the delivery of library services with an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion; oversight of human resources focusing on mentoring and coaching a committed staff; development and presentation of the annual budget; coordination of collaborative, strong relationships with the Library Board, the Library Foundation, and the Friends of the Library; and a continued knowledge and interest of current trends in leading for the future of the Library. Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include a master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program and five years of progressively responsible administrative and managerial experience in public libraries. Essential attributes include personal integrity, demonstrated skill and experience with fiscal oversight and budgeting, excellent interpersonal and consensus-building skills, a focus on creating a culture of trust and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and demonstrated ability to provide leadership throughout the Library promoting the values set forth in the Library's mission. In addition, the CEO should possess demonstrable communication skills that span the library, its staff and stakeholders and the community at large. The CEO, through care, compassion, and energy will galvanize organizational efforts to position the Library at the forefront of library service.
