Hi All, I just want to alert everyone that the 2021 Michigan Notable Books Author Conversations videos are now available on YouTube. Viewers of the video series can explore the backgrounds of the authors on the 2021 Michigan Notable Book list, as well as uncover more about their creative process (much like the bonus segments of a DVD). The playlist on YouTube (which also includes last year's 2020 Author Conversations) can be found here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQNv-MrTjyhIngpYBxjWI7fg46Nu0vLQ1 Everyone is encouraged to highlight these as content for their own library's social media platforms or for other programming. We are also rolling them out on the Library of Michigan's Facebook and Twitter accounts so feel free to share those posts on their own accounts. Library of Michigan Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/libraryofmichigan Library of Michigan Twitter: https://twitter.com/LibraryofMich Michigan Center for the Book: https://www.facebook.com/MichiganCenterfortheBook Social media hashtags to use include: #MINotableBks #MiAuthors #LibraryofMichigan. We also have a companion promotional video highlighting the Michigan Notable Books program that you are welcome to share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlXeq6X5XAs. All other information about the Michigan Notable Books program is at www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks<http://www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks>. If you have questions, don't hesitate to email us at Librarian(a)Michigan.gov<mailto:Librarian@Michigan.gov>. Thanks! Re: [Michlib-l] Michlib-l Digest, Vol 82, Issue 6

Re: New equity and social justice principle added to ALA Code of Ethics I stand by the long-overdue update to the ALA Code of Ethics. Our job as librarians is to uphold the truth, and the truth is that this county was founded on the oppression and subjugation of non-white people. This basic premise (proved beyond a shadow of a doubt through primary source materials and almost any history book) has impacted every subsequent generation that grows up or immigrates to America -- especially people of color but specifically Black and indigenous people. In 2021, It blows me away that we continue to argue about it in libraries instead of doing something about it. Library workers and librarians are predominantly white. The statistics are staggering, and it's our collective problem to address and fix. I'd also like to respectfully disagree with the idea that by acknowledging these basic truths about what people of color have endured in our communities, we are limiting the views of those on the opposite side of the aisle. This isn't about political ideologies. It's about the truth and facts. Libraries have historically catered to white communities much more than to Black ones. I encourage you all to read up on the history of segregation in public libraries. Finally: I moved to Michigan from South Carolina two years ago. I live in Detroit but work in the suburbs. Southeast Michigan is far more segregated than anywhere I've visited or lived during my first 33 years of life in the South. I would love to see TLN create a committee or group to address this. It's something I would be happy to be a part of. Free Cromaine Zoom Event: Disruption in Detroit 8/18 at 6:30pm
by Meagan Brown 06 Aug '21

06 Aug '21

Hi there! Cromaine has a great free zoom event coming up we'd love to share with you and anyone you think may be interested. On August 18, we will be hosting Professor (and author) Dan Clark as he talks about a fascinating period in Detroit's history - the 1950s. Read the description and click below to register. *"Most people think of the 1950s as a Golden Age for Detroit autoworkers, with steady jobs, increasing wages, and improved benefits propelling them into the middle class. Author Dan Clark's research demonstrates that this was not the case, that the '50s was a decade of job insecurity and economic instability for most Detroit autoworkers."* Click *here* <https://cromaine.evanced.info/signup/EventDetails?EventId=17803&backTo=Cale…> to register!
