Sad news regarding Saul Amdursky
by Ryan Wieber 10 Aug '21

10 Aug '21

Dear Michigan librarians, Kalamazoo Public Library and our community (and the library profession) recently lost an instrumental figure in the history of KPL. Longtime, former director Saul Amdursky passed away July 30, 2021 after a battle with cancer. Saul brought significant, positive changes in library service to Kalamazoo, and his efforts led to the library becoming one of the first formed as a district library in Michigan, the eventual construction and renovation of all KPL library locations in the late 1990s, and acclaim as the Library Journal National Library of the Year honor in 2002. Originally from Rochester, New York, Saul graduated with his library degree from University of Kentucky, and embarked upon a career that included stops at libraries in Prince William County, Virginia (1971-1975); Albion, Michigan (1975-1979); Racine, Wisconsin (1979-1982); Bloomington, Illinois (1982-1987); Kalamazoo (1987-2004); Fraser Valley Regional Library System, British Columbia (2004-2007); and Des Moines, Iowa (2007-2010). Saul advocated enthusiastically for great public library service here in Kalamazoo and nationally, and the passion for his profession was evident in every conversation. We will miss him, yet his memory and significant contributions to Kalamazoo and the library world remain! According to the Amdursky family, a memorial service will take place later this fall in Kalamazoo. -Ryan Ryan Wieber | Director Kalamazoo Public Library | CEN 315 S. Beginning Chapter Book Recommendations
by Andrea Estelle 09 Aug '21

09 Aug '21

Hi All, I am building a new collection here at ODL of easy/beginner chapter books: chapter books for kids who are just starting to read chapter books. Some of our regular junior collection will move into this but wondering if anyone has great recommendations for "must-haves" in this section as we also have some donation funds to build this. I am thinking titles similar to Scholastic's Acorn books. Happy to compile and share the recommendations if anyone wants them. Thanks! Andrea Andrea Estelle, MLIS Brighten the Corner Where You Are! New equity and social justice principle added to ALA Code of Ethics
by mweston dowagiacdl.org 09 Aug '21

09 Aug '21

I'd like to support Karyn Ruley's concerns about ALA's most recent addition to their Code of Ethics. Reading through the first eight principles, and into the first sentence of the ninth, there is a sense of the universal and of the common humanity we share with ourselves and our patrons. "...all library users", "...each library user's rights", and "...the inherent dignity and rights of every person", changes dramatically in tone with "dismantle systemic and individual biases" and "advance racial and social justice". Absolutely this is worthy of discussion, and this is the place for it. Matt Weston, Library Director Dowagiac District Library 211 Commercial St. Dowagiac, MI 49047-1728 269-782-3826

Holiday Policy (July 5th, Juneteenth, etc.)
by Eric Hansen 09 Aug '21

09 Aug '21

Hello, I've written some language updating our policy to clarify when we are closed for holidays. The way it is phrased currently created some questions about closing on recognized holidays like Monday, July 5th and how to respond to newly recognized holidays like Juneteenth. Does anyone have policy language which manages this sort of thing really well? I'll compile responses and send the spreadsheet to anyone who asks. But that wasn't always the case. Milton S. Hershey worked hard and failed often before his chocolate company was finally successful. And when he did become a household name and had earned a vast fortune, Milton and his wife Catherine decided to give it all away. Because of their generosity, tens of thousands of orphans have been saved, protected, and educated. *Register here:* https://lyon.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/virtual-the-hershey-chocolate-… Presented by Laura F. Keyes, a librarian in Illinois who also portrays historic women and gives lectures (since 2008). Laura enjoys researching literary symbolism and has been contracted to write a book on that subject! Since 1999, Laura has been active in community theatre in Illinois and Wisconsin, serving on the Board of Directors for Pec Playhouse Theatre more than once. And in her non-existent spare time, she is an avid baker and cat enthusiast! *For children from 8+ to teens: * *This Thursday, August 12 at 5:00pm or 7:00pm, join educators from the Sloan-Longway Museum and Planetarium for a Jitter Critters Workshop.* This virtual event also comes with a kit that registrants can pickup from the library. *Event description:* No need to get the jitters as you create your own critter! It starts at the Detroit Athletic Club and winds westward through Lansing and Grand Rapids, ending up in Muskegon and taking on several other names along the way. Originally a Native American trail, Grand River Avenue has been a westbound route from the Straits of Detroit to the eastern shores of Lake Michigan for more than a thousand years. Over time, it has served as a stagecoach route, a plank road, and ultimately, one of America’s first two-lane highways. Let co-authors Jon Milan and Gail Offen, “Grand River Avenue: >From Detroit to Lake Michigan” (Arcadia Press, 2014), take you on a visual tour along one of Michigan’s true “Blue Highways,” sharing an hour of important stops, interesting people, architectural finds and the lively history of this amazing treasure. They’ll even solve a few mysteries, like how Redford got its name, whether one of its most famous cross streets is pronounced ‘Lasher’ or ‘Lahser” and how the town of Novi got its name (careful – it’s not what you think!) *Register here: * https://lyon.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/virtual-tbd-gail-offen-and-jon… Gail Offen is an adjunct professor of advertising at Lawrence Technological University, and an award-winning creative director, writer and branding specialist. She’s a frequent lecturer on Michigan-related subjects and co-author of several books: Grand River Avenue: From Detroit to Lake Michigan, Arcadia, 2014; Iconic Restaurants of Ann Arbor, Arcadia, 2016 and Michigan Haunts: Public Places and Eerie Spaces, Arcadia, 2019. Jon Milan is a Detroit-based freelance author, pianist and music historian. He frequently lectures and performs on Michigan-related subjects and has written five books, three co-authored with Gail Offen, as well as “Detroit: Ragtime and the Jazz Age,” Arcadia, 2009; and“Old Chicago Road.” Arcadia, 2011. He has written for many Michigan-based periodicals and spent his professional career as a corporate communications manager. Thank you! Have a great day, -- Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Outreach Librarian Lyon Township Public Library 27005 S. Milford Rd. South Lyon, MI 48178
