Al Capone & Gangsters in Michigan
by EMAIL TEAM 12 Aug '21

12 Aug '21

Dear Librarians, I am looking for someone who could present a program on Al Capone and the gangsters in Michigan. Did any library have a program on this subject in the past? I know there was The Purple Gang around Detroit, but there were gangsters in southwest Michigan also. Snacks/Food Handling at Programs
by Jessica Ishmael 12 Aug '21

12 Aug '21

Would you be willing to share how your library currently handles food items at library programs, such as snacks or samples? Has it changed since COVID? Does your library have a policy or a practice around food at programming? Are there safety precautions in place, to what degree, do you use waivers? Since COVID, we're curious about how to move forward with traditional things like sharables (such as splitting a pizza, or a large bag of chips in a bowl, or box of cookies at teen programs), use of individually wrapped snacks, or handling samples from cooking demonstrations or recipe challenges (for teen and adult programming). It would be helpful to know what others are doing. Thanks! Best, Jessica Ishmael Director Lincoln Township Public Library 2099 W John Beers Rd Stevensville, MI 49127 (269) 429-9575 ext 126

CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! (Did you know? All Michigan public libraries are members of CSLP, even if your library opts not to use the slogan/artwork/manual, because LM covers your membership fees on a statewide level using IMLS/LSTA funds.) The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBq6Yof5mW1gGzDeHroUQ7h09MRZ94kEW…<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> Continuing Education Data Literacy for Youth: Using Census Data in Public Library Programming<https://www.ala.org/pla/education/onlinelearning/webinars/foryouth> Tuesday, 8/31/2021 2:00 PM-3:00 PM (Eastern) Data literacy is increasingly an essential skill set for navigating everyday life. Learn how public libraries can increase awareness and understanding among youth of the pervasive role of data in their lives. The rich resources of the U.S. Census Bureau's Statistics in Schools<https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sis.html> are a valuable tool to advance data literacy, and many libraries are using Census data to foster civic education and community engagement among children and teens. The webinar speakers will discuss approaches to data literacy that reach diverse populations and address real-world issues of interest to youth. Discover how public library programs and services can help children and young adults think critically and ethically about data. This webinar-the third of six-is presented as part of the Census Data Literacy<https://www.ala.org/pla/data/census> project, an initiative of PLA in partnership with ALA's Public Policy and Advocacy Office, which aims to build data literacy skills among library staff with the overall goal of promoting awareness and use of Census data in their communities. These webinars will be facilitated by Karen Brown, manager, ACRL Consulting Services. Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture September 2021 Details & link to register: https://www.libraryjournal.com/?event=equity-in-action-sept-2021<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.libra…> Library staff at all levels within their organizations have the power-and the responsibility-to help cultivate an antiracist culture, from evaluating spaces, programs, services, and collections to examining policies and practices to reflecting on one's own implicit biases. Creating an internal culture founded on principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential to building a community-centered library that meets the needs and expectations of its users. In this course, you will learn about the concrete actions library leaders are taking to make their libraries antiracist today and in the future, and the tools that make it possible. Practical coursework, along with targeted support, will take you from theory to application, helping you to transform your library services to better meet the needs of all your patrons-and attract new ones. You'll complete assignments to build your own equity-based initiative over 3+ weeks in an interactive online classroom environment with personal coaching from an expert in the field. In addition, you'll have access to our foundational bonus content-rich supporting materials you can explore at your own pace, including a series of webinars from Library Journal and School Library Journal contributors, readings, activities, and videos. Equipment and Software Feedback
by Caitlyn V. Tanner 12 Aug '21

12 Aug '21

Hello everyone, The Hosford History Center and Lawrence Archives at Olivet College are in the beginning stages of digitizing our collection, and we would greatly appreciate some feedback on our chosen equipment and software before we purchase them. Some background information on our institution and collection: we are a small to medium sized archive that focuses on collecting and preserving the history of Olivet College, and to a lesser extent the town around it. Our collection is fairly diverse, containing both loose and bound full-sized newspapers, yearbooks dating from the late 1800s to the early 2000s, loose paper documents, regular sized, oversized, and panoramic photographs, bound and loose college catalogs dating back as far as the 1840s, and a variety of 3D items, such as clothing, trophies, and sports equipment. In order to digitize our collection, we have chosen the following equipment: * The Bookeye 5 V3 Book Scanner (for bound items, as well as fragile items that would be damaged by a flatbed scanner) * The Epson Expression 12000XL Photo Scanner (for photos and loose paper items) * A Nikon D3500 DSLR Camera (for items that cannot be digitized via a scanner) Additionally, we have chosen PastPerfect Version 5 as our collections management software, Omeka.net to host our digital files and exhibits online, and ABBYY FineReader PDF as an OCR software to transcribe our documents into machine readable text. For those of you who have used any of this software or equipment: Do they work well? Are there any major problems you’ve encountered? Are there any alternatives you would suggest over these? Thank you all in advance for taking time out of your day to help us! -Caitlyn Tanner, and the rest of The Hosford History Center and Lawrence Archives staff Caitlyn Tanner '21 Scholar in Residence Olivet College Hosford History Center and Lawrence Archives Twitter<https://twitter.com/oc_archives?lang=en> Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/oc_archives/?hl=en> Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/ocarchives/> 320 S. Get started with TALK!
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 12 Aug '21

12 Aug '21

The TALK<https://texttolearn.com/> Team is presenting 3 sessions, starting this Monday, for participating TALK libraries: * TALK: Getting Started - Do you prefer to attend a Zoom training rather than watch training videos and read user guides? Come to this general TALK training where you can ask questions as we walk you through the basic steps of navigating your MCLS account to access promotional materials and schedule event messages. * TALK: Tips for launching When we developed and tested TALK in Washtenaw County, we found that the back-to-school season was the best time to get parents excited about TALK. Are you ready to launch the TALK program at your library this fall, but are not sure where to start? Have you launched TALK already and want to ask questions about how to get more parents to sign up, or share your success with others? Join us for a conversation where we share stories about what worked in our county and answer questions to help you navigate a successful launch. We'll talk about the promotional materials we chose to print professionally or in-house, and the early partnerships we formed. * TALK: Working together for success Join us for a conversation about how to collaborate with other libraries in your area to help make the TALK program more effective. We will discuss cost sharing, printing materials, promoting within your county or region, and collaborating on events. We will also help you connect with neighboring libraries to get started on a fall launch. You do need to be a participating library to attend, so Sign Your Library Up for the Free TALK Program<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftexttolear…> Today! Just want to know more? Check out the informational webinar on Ypsi's free TALK service: https://youtu.be/zOZhlbQmpCs<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%…>, hosted by the Library of Michigan. The webinar provides an overview on "Bringing "TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten" to Your Library." All libraries are encouraged to sign up for this important and FREE service to support the building of pre-literacy skills in your service populations. TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten sends fun activities parents can do with their babies and preschoolers at home. Developed by librarians and based on Every Child Ready to Read, TALK activities are designed to get kids ready for school success. The messages align with tips librarians share with parents at storytime, but because they are delivered via text message, you can reach parents you don't see at the library. Anyone in Michigan can sign up to receive the messages, but libraries that sign up to promote TALK can send two messages per month to users in their zip codes advertising library events and services, and get access to award-winning promotional materials, from flyers and yard signs to social media posts and QR codes. Tools and guides to help you develop community partnerships to reach parents you don't already see at the library are also included. Sign up<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> now to begin reviewing TALK resources you can use for a successful launch, then attend training sessions on Zoom later this summer to ask questions and get more in-depth information on using the provided resources.
