Hello All, We are considering using Baker & Taylor's Sustainable Shelves service. Has your library used this service? Do you recommend it? How much credit do they issue and what types of books qualify for their credit? Any tips? Any better alternatives for dealing with used/weeded books? Input on 9/11 and storytime
by nnowak＠uproc.lib.mi.us 03 Sep '21

03 Sep '21

Good evening, I wanted to ask fellow storytime readers whether you have ever broached the topic of 9/11 and/or grief for storytime and whether you would recommend that. Personally, I'm conflicted about it because, on one hand, I assume schools teach about it so most kids probably at least know about it, but on the other hand, there is a large homeschool population where I'm located and I don't want to bring up a topic with the children if their parents don't feel comfortable talking to them about it yet. Any guidance is very much appreciated! Thank you, Natalie Nowak Bayliss Public Library Pickford Community Library

LM Webinars Ready to Read Michigan Presents: A Joyous Way to Learn! With Jim Gill<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> Thursday, October 7, 2021 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET Music Play to promote readiness, literacy, math development, and inclusion. This lively session incorporates Jim Gill's<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> most recent songs as well as in-depth discussion connecting music play with school readiness, literacy development and early math development. Librarians leave the session inspired to share a new repertoire of songs and playful literacy activities with the children they care for. Even more, they will leave the session understanding that what is most challenging about working in early childhood is also what makes the profession so exciting. When we define our teaching as helping children learn, we not only provide joyous challenges for the children. We also keep ourselves engaged and rejuvenated by watching their excitement as they learn. This workshop will connect with the 5 practices of Ready to Read Michigan. Jim Gill<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimgi…> is a musician and author with unique credentials among children's artists. Jim is a child development specialist, having completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. For this reason, each of Jim's recordings and books is created as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. Jim speaks to early childhood educators, care providers and children's librarians across the country about the many benefits of play in young children's lives. Jim has shared his expertise on music, play and literacy with organizations such as Head Start, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the National Association for Family Child Care and, most recently, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Cost: Free. Ready to Read Michigan Presents: Storytimes for Everyone! A 3 Session Series with Pamela Martin-Diaz<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> Training I Tuesday, November 9, 2021 1:00 PM-3:00 PM ET Training II Tuesday, November 16, 2021 1:00 PM-3:00 PM ET Training III Tuesday November 23, 2021 1:00 PM-3:00 PM ET Early literacy is the base upon which a child who reads with understanding is built. The goal of this 3-part workshop is to teach storytime staff how to explain, model and encourage caregivers to help their children develop the early literacy skills needed to learn how to read. Participants will become familiar with seminal research on early literacy, how to explain its importance to caregivers while presenting fun, interactive storytimes. This will also cover the 5 practices of Every Child Ready to Read, the basis of Ready to Read Michigan. Pamela Martin-Diaz<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.alast…> served as branch manager of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN, and is now an independent Early Literacy Consultant. Additional Resources One-to-One Correspondence - An Essential Skill to Engage Children in the Path to Early Math<https://home.edweb.net/webinar/bookchats20210909/> Thursday, September 9, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT Whether you are a teacher looking for ways to strengthen the math learning in your early childhood classroom, an educator in a community of practice who wants to learn more about teaching math in developmentally appropriate ways, or a teacher-educator who wants to offer students an easy-to-use reference and guide for helping young children develop their math competencies and skills, this edWebinar will help you make math learning a fun and worthwhile activity in your setting. Early math development is one of the most consistent predictors of later academic performance. According to international research, there is an overwhelming need to focus on appropriate early math development. Most early childhood educators have received very little formal training in math for the early years. The goal of this presentation is to help bridge this gap and to spark interest in developing little mathematicians. This edWebinar will be of interest to preK-1 teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. The authors seek to expand the maker community and build maker champions. This edWebinar will be of interest to preschool teachers, librarians, and school leaders. Computer Help Request - New Computers Broke Amazon
by Ted Gregory 02 Sep '21

02 Sep '21

Hello, Recently the Mackinaw Area Public Library got some new computers (Dell Inspiron 7000s running Windows 10) in our office. Today we tried to make an Amazon order, and the box with the payment options didn't load with the rest of the page. Through experimentation, we discovered that this problem is 1) limited to the new computers (older models worked fine), and 2) not browser-based (the problem persisted between Edge and Firefox). We've fiddled with some settings, but nothing seems to have any effect. If anybody has an idea about how to fix this, we would be grateful. Thanks, -- Ted Gregory Mackinaw Area Public Library mackinaw1(a)gmail.com Find us online at http://www.mackinawareapl.michlibrary.org/ <http://mackinawareapubliclibrary.org/> and on Facebook! 528 W.
