In library laptop lending
by Grimm, Erica 31 Aug '21

31 Aug '21

Hi everyone, My library branch is testing a model of having fewer fixed computer stations and adding laptops for in-branch use to help with demand surges and social distancing, which leads to the question of how to manage them so there's some chance they'll be returned or there's a record of who has what, especially if staff changes throughout the day? So, I'm looking for feedback from all of you with in-branch use laptops, what's your process for managing and securing them? Do you have patrons fill out a user agreement? Do you take their driver's license/ID as collateral? If the person doesn't have driver's license or ID, is there an alternative thing that you collect? Or do you require a library card and check it out like a regular library item but for a shorter time period, such as a few hours? Also, do you allow minors, specifically unaccompanied minors, to use in-branch laptops? A few things to note: we don't use RFID or other security tags on our library items, we do use CASSIE by Librarica for all our public computers, these laptops included. We've recently moved back into a renovated and expanded building, so there are more spaces that aren't in staff's direct line of sight. Thanks in advance for your help! Re: [Michlib-l] Information Literacy and Public Libraries
by Laura Warren-Gross 31 Aug '21

Hi Adrianne: There are several great infographics and promotional pieces regarding information literacy (and MeL use) on the MeL Library Staff Page (Library Staff - Library Staff - Michigan eLibrary at Michigan eLibrary, Library of Michigan (mel.org)<https://mel.org/staff> ) including the Information Literacy Top 3 Basics. I also recommend scrolling down to the Search Strategies section to have a look at a few of the documents provided by EBSCO such as the difference between MeL eResources and a general Internet search, the differences among different types of publications, and how to assess trustworthy resources. A discussion of a few of these with exemplar articles from different types of sources might be a good way to do a hands-on activity about information literacy without everyone having a computer/device in the moment. Seed Library suggestions
by Williams, Kahlia 30 Aug '21

30 Aug '21

Good evening, We are looking to possibly start a small seed library here at JDL, and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with one or has one currently at their library? We would love to hear any and all suggestions on how you may have initiated this, and how you manage it at your library. Specifically, are the seeds donations, and people take and leave them, almost like a little free library? Or has anyone chosen to catalog them and actually have them part of circulation? I am curious about how this would work, especially in the early stages. We do not have a community garden or anything similar at our library in order for it to be a self sustainable program, and I am imagining that its success would rely primarily on seed donations from patrons and possibly local organizations (we are not a rural library, but there are a lot of farming communities in the areas we serve). Any and all suggestions are most appreciated! Many thanks, Kahlia Williams Youth Librarian Meijer Branch Library 2699 Airport Road Jackson, MI 49202 P: 517-788-4480

local SF convention in Romulus October 1-3
by Jennifer Dye 30 Aug '21

30 Aug '21

One sign of returning to normal (using an alternative definition of "normal") is the return of a small local SF convention. Fiasco was launched in 2019, and was virtual in 2020. It will be live and in person this year. This is a small convention, run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. I doubt that they have filed for 501(c)(3) status, but this is not a profit-driven project. Flyer is attached. I would have preferred one written for the general population that gave basic details and the website. This is providing the sort of information that people expect in a flyer picked up at another convention. If you would like something for the general population for posting, let me know. Happy to answer any questions, though I may need to refer the questions to people on the committee. Fiasco is intended to be family friendly. I will be making sure that there are some activities for younger kids, especially a place for decompression.
