Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid Training with MSU Extension
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 30 Aug '21

30 Aug '21

Space is extremely limited and this course requires 2 hours of self-paced learning with a 6 hour live virtual training. Please register only if you can commit to the time and work involved. Youth Mental Health First Aid Training September 21, 2021 8:30am-4:30pm ET Youth Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common supports. This is a 2 hour self-paced course, combined with a 6-hour instructor led course and uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. * Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis: * Assess for risk of suicide or harm * Listen nonjudgmentally * Give reassurance and information * Encourage appropriate professional help * Encourage self-help and other support strategies Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals - they do not diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program offers concrete tools and answers key questions, like "what do I do?" and "where can someone find help?" Certified Mental Health First Aid instructors provide a list of community healthcare providers and national resources, support groups, and online tools for mental health and addictions treatment and support. All trainees receive a program manual to compliment the course material. Who Should Attend This training is designed for Michigan library staff. Each class is limited to 20 people per program section so register early. A waiting list will become available once the 20 seats are filled. Cancellation Policy Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion, attend the full instructor led day or do not complete the post-work and evaluation will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Cancellations must be received at least three business days prior to the class. Alternates are encouraged for those who register but cannot attend. Participants who do not complete the self-paced portion or attend the full instructor led day will not be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Participants who register for a training and fail to cancel at least three business days prior and no-show will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. "Reference" Desk Names
by Barbara Beaton 28 Aug '21

28 Aug '21

Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry! Here's a summary: Of 14 public libraries, 8 are currently calling their desk "Information". 2 call it "Service Desk" which includes information/reference AND circulation. Other names range from Adult Information, Adult Services, Browsing Desk, Reference Desk. Several respondents indicated that they are in the process of rebranding 'reference' and more than one library indicated that 'circulation' is now called 'checkout'. A couple of academic librarians also kindly took the time to respond and their desks tend to have titles such as 'research assistance'. Thanks again everyone -- this was very useful! The Railway Series - Special Request
by Rebecca Russell 28 Aug '21

28 Aug '21

Hey Everyone, We have a young man that came in today looking for a very specific book. He wants to read the complete Railway Series, and he is short by one book. Our catalog shows that we have it, and it shows this particular book as the display picture for our box set, but we do not have this particular title. This young man is specifically looking for an individual book. He will not read an anthology. Because these books are nearly 50 years old, I can't find another library in our system that has it, nor can I find them in MEL (apart from a stacks-only copy at U-M). I was wondering if anybody had either a copy not in the catalog, or possibly in their donations that they might be willing to spare (either to lend or for purchase). The book is the title *Mountain Engines*, and it is the 19th book in the *Rev. W. Awdry's Railway Series*, better known today as Thomas the Tank Engine. It is part of the box set of 26 volumes, originally published in 1964 and subsequently re-released. The ISBN is 978-0434927968, though as far as I can tell, it is not available for sale outside of the box set unless you get it from a secondary seller. Do any of you have a copy of this book, or a solution I may be able to give the mother (this seems to be a sticking point for her son, he asked if I could hunt down the person who hadn't returned our copy) that does not involve purchasing the book? I think she's probably getting close to that point, but it was such an odd request, I thought I might ask.
