DIRECTOR SEARCH: ST. IGNACE PUBLIC LIBRARY – Through April 30, 5:00 PM, or until filled. Due to the retirement of our current Director, the Board of Trustees of the St. Ignace Public Library, St. Ignace, Michigan, is seeking a qualified, creative, dynamic and motivated leader as Director. The Board of Trustees has established goals and priorities for the library’s future and is looking forward to recruiting a Director that is excited about community involvement, is able to manage all areas of library services, and will lead library growth supported by recently passed millages. The successful candidate will be a customer-oriented person who enjoys the small-town Upper Peninsula way of life and interacting with the public as a hands-on Director. Strong interpersonal, communication, and technology skills and the ability to represent the library in the community are essential. The St. Ignace Public Library is a purpose-built building completely paid for by the community through donations. It was opened in 2005 and has a unique architectural presence in the community. With its view of the Straits of Mackinac and Mackinac Island, the library provides a pleasing venue for both staff and patrons. Current staffing includes a full-time Director, a part-time Assistant Director, Clerk and Youth Services Clerk. A successful millage levy in 2025 and 2026, each for 10 years, provides the funding necessary to meet the recent goals established by the Board of Trustees. The library serves a population of approximately 4,400 and counts nearly 2,000 regular patrons. There is an active and supportive Friends group and several library volunteers. The library program has strong community support. St. Ignace, Gateway to the Upper Peninsula, and ferry access to historic Mackinac Island, is a popular tourist destination and as such is a busy community, particularly in the summer. There are events occurring almost each weekend and often during the week. These include Music on the Bayfront, the internationally recognized St. Ignace Auto Show, and the famous Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day weekend. In addition to the planned events, there are miles of lake shore, hiking trails, snow mobile trails and a rich history that is recognized and featured in our local museums. A first class marina, SCUBA diving on many Great Lakes wrecks, and excellent fishing are available for those who enjoy water activities. In St. Ignace, almost everyone has an opportunity to participate in some activity and enjoy the sense of community a small town engenders. Teen Advisory Board Communications Question

Hello, everyone! I have a question specifically for those running or assisting with their library's Teen Advisory Board: Is there a method of communication that you have found particularly useful for getting in touch with your kids and sending out reminders? I have all of the kids' emails, but I know my teens, and I know they are absolutely not checking their emails on even a semi-regular basis. One of my TAB members recommended using Remind, which I remember using in high school when it was Remind 101. I do not want to create a group chat or discord server that I would have to be a part of. I love these kids, but I would very much prefer to not give them my personal contact information. Remind seems like the best solution, but I wanted to see if anyone else has come up with anything better. `Hello! Are you a Michigan library director, board member, or friends group member? Have you ever faced questions involving the law and how it relates to Michigan libraries? Questions like: Heavy rains have caused the library’s roof to leak causing a slow but steady drip..drip… right in the center of the library main reading room adjacent to the service desk. As a temporary measure, a bucket was placed to catch the water while an urgent call was made to the facilities manager, and plans were made to address the problem. In addition to the bucket, the library placed a plastic “Wet Floor” sign on the floor to one side of the bucket and an in-house created printed sign stating “watch your step” on the other side, so that patrons on multiple sides of the bucket could see at least one sign. In between assisting patrons and other duties, the library staff at the service alerted patrons who were venturing too close to the filling bucket. Other staff would periodically empty the water from the bucket. A patron approached the desk with a question and to check out some materials, bringing her toddler son with her. The boy was fascinated with the drip and the bucket and had to be repeatedly reminded by library staff to stay away. The mother took the boy’s hand and led him back to the desk as she finished her business. An issue occurred with the transaction and during an intense conversation with the attending library staff member, the mom dropped the boy’s hand. Suddenly there was a cry followed by a shouted “What the Hell!?” The boy had knocked over the bucket of water while attempting to get into the bucket. The bucket toppled with the boy, spilling a small amount of rusty water onto the carpet and the pants of another patron passing by. The boy was unhurt, but wet and crying from surprise and fear of the other patron’s yelled comment. The mom complained about the bucket as an “attractive nuisance” and a public safety hazard and submitted a complaint to the library board asking for reimbursement of the boy’s clothing and shoes. The other affected patron wanted reimbursement for the cost of cleaning his pants, with the option of replacement cost if the stains did not come out. The mom has threatened a call to the municipal code office and a lawyer. How should the library reply?
